“Relax, Ensign,” she responded, rounding the console she had been standing behind and then perching on it. Her eyes flicked up and down as she studied the young man in front of her. “I prefer ma’am over sir, but you’re not going to find me hunting you down if you forget either once in a while. We have better things to do than to get hung up on Starfleet formality. And yes, this is a great place to start for your first shift. What attracted you to security?”

“In all honesty ma’am, I felt that would be where I would best be able to develop the skills I have gained throughout my time on the farm. Plus, I’ve also been interested in making sure the law is kept, and that began with getting an understanding of the law. Also, if I come across my brother while doing my job, that’s all the better. I don’t have high hopes for that. Space is a big place, and five years is a long time,” he said.
Every time he mentioned his brother, things seemed to become more comfortable for Simon. He didn’t feel so ashamed to hide the fact that he had his own goals, but he knew that he couldn’t let them get in the way of his job. He was also becoming less worried about what he found out about his lost brother, as the support he has got from his fellow officers, and his cadets and officers at the academy have definitely made talking about his personal objectives easier.
“I also want to get field experience first. I thought about something my previous chief said, and becoming a JAG officer is definitely something that appeals to me, but getting that experience will help with making the tough decisions they do on a regular basis. I want to be able to relate to situations, and being able to put myself in the shoes of those people I’ll be making those decisions for will make the task that little bit easier, so I guess there are a few reasons,” he finished with a slight smile.

Allison’s head tilted to the side in interest as Starr answered her question. She could tell that the ensign was becoming more relaxed as he chatted on about his motivations for going into security, although he hadn’t gone into too much detail about the one that interested in her the most.
“You mentioned your brother, Ensign,” she began. “What do you mean that you’re trying to run into him? He’s in Starfleet?” While this was beginning to sound like a psychological evaluation, really, Allison just wanted to know more about the people working underneath her. Perhaps it was her heritage showing, but she felt like it made her a good leader all the same.
