Starr arrived five minutes early to his duty shift on deck 31. This was his first shift, and already he was going to be coordinating his own division. He wondered whether he was being rushed into things or not, but approached the security station on deck 31 where NE Pelleon was supposed to be meeting him. Approaching the security station, “Hi, I’m Ensign Simon Starr, the new security officer on board. I’m supposed to meet with a NE Pelleon here in five minutes?” he asked, not automatically assuming the officer there was the person he was supposed to meet.

A slender, athletic blonde looked back at Starr with a raised eyebrow. “NE Pelleon has been reassigned to lead a holodeck simulation for several crew members,” she replied in a soft voice. “I’m Lieutenant Devlin, the new Chief of Security of the USS Ark Angel. And you are?” Of course, she already knew the answer to that question, having taken the time to study the crew roster and profiles before boarding the Ark Angel, but she did always like to exchange those pleasantries.

“Sorry, sir” Starr replies “sorry if you don’t prefer that, but I learned not to automatically assume gender a long time ago. I’m Ensign Simon Starr, the new Security officer, I was told to report here for my first shift?” he says the last part as a question, even though it was more of a statement in a southern British accent, and his build showed that he has been doing physical work for a lot of his life. Based on the accent and the build, it was quite obvious that Starr had a farming background.

Allison attempted to keep up her stare for a few more moments, but finally dissolved into a slight smirk and giggle.

“Relax, Ensign,” she responded, rounding the console she had been standing behind and then perching on it. Her eyes flicked up and down as she studied the young man in front of her. “I prefer ma’am over sir, but you’re not going to find me hunting you down if you forget either once in a while. We have better things to do than to get hung up on Starfleet formality. And yes, this is a great place to start for your first shift. What attracted you to security?”

“In all honesty ma’am, I felt that would be where I would best be able to develop the skills I have gained throughout my time on the farm. Plus, I’ve also been interested in making sure the law is kept, and that began with getting an understanding of the law. Also, if I come across my brother while doing my job, that’s all the better. I don’t have high hopes for that. Space is a big place, and five years is a long time,” he said.

Every time he mentioned his brother, things seemed to become more comfortable for Simon. He didn’t feel so ashamed to hide the fact that he had his own goals, but he knew that he couldn’t let them get in the way of his job. He was also becoming less worried about what he found out about his lost brother, as the support he has got from his fellow officers, and his cadets and officers at the academy have definitely made talking about his personal objectives easier.

“I also want to get field experience first. I thought about something my previous chief said, and becoming a JAG officer is definitely something that appeals to me, but getting that experience will help with making the tough decisions they do on a regular basis. I want to be able to relate to situations, and being able to put myself in the shoes of those people I’ll be making those decisions for will make the task that little bit easier, so I guess there are a few reasons,” he finished with a slight smile.
