After her meeting with the Captain, Mykl headed for medical to get her boarding physical out of the way. She’d made sure her records were transferred to the Memorial because of the neurological disease (CIPD) that she suffered from. Currently, she wasn’t having any issues with her nerves, but you could never be too sure when it came to your health. Right? ‘Right.’ she answered herself silently. It was the middle of the afternoon when Najjar walked through the doors into the pristine bay. It didn’t look too busy so she walked over to one of the staff. “Hi, I’m Lt Mykl Najjar, the new counselor. I need to be examined before I can get my clearance codes.” She looked around. “Is there someone available to see me?”
LT Mykl Najjar, CNS
Hayley turned to face the Lt. and held out a hand in greeting, “Welcome to the Ark Angel Lt. Najjar, I’ve been expecting you.”
Lt. JG Hayley Marshall
CMOMykl shook the offered hand. “Nice to meet you, Lt, and you are?” She could see the woman’s rank but had no idea of her name. “I don’t know if you’re aware, but I have a companion who travels with me–does he need to stop by for a physical too?” Not all of her assignments had required it, but some had. It seemed to be up to the CMO in charge.
CNS Mykl Najjar, Lt
“Apologies, I probably should have led with that, I’m Lt. Hayley Marshall, Chief Medical Officer. If your companion’s medical records are up to date he will only need to report for a medical when he is due for routine assessment.” She gestured toward the nearest vacant Biobed. “If you will step this way?”
Lt. JG Hayley Marshall
CMOShe couldn’t remember the last time Pic had been in for a physical, but she’d ask him when she returned home that evening. Following the Chief’s lead, Mykl hopped up on the bed and tried to settle the nerves that always accompanied being looked over by a doctor. “He’s really a wonderful man and has been with me since I was a child.” She felt herself doing that nervous chatty thing but couldn’t rein in back in. “He was born without vocal chords, you know?”
CNS Mykl Najjar, Lt
Hayley could understand the nerves, having felt them herself when she returned to the Ark Angel after her time on Earth. She smiled gently as she replied, “That’s rather unusual.” She paused to collect her medical tricorder and probe. “Does he have a surgical speech prosthesis, or was he not a good candidate for that?” She reached toward the Lt. with the medical probe before continuing, “May I?” She paused, waiting for consent.
Lt. JG Hayley Marshall
CMO“Of course, go right ahead.” Mykl continued to answer her question. “Pic was born without vocal chords and without the structures to support being fitted for new ones. The opening in his throat is too small to accommodate an implant. He tried a couple of different artificial voice simulators but didn’t like the sound of them. I guess after so many years of not speaking, he was fine continuing on that way. We have a kind of sign language between us and if he needs to speak with someone other than myself, he can write Federation Standard or I can interpret for him.”
CNS Mykl Najjar, Lt
Hayley completed the scan while listening to the Lt’s reply. “I can understand his choice,” she replied, “Since it’s become his natural form of communication, anything else might feel artificial to him.”
OOC: anything out of the ordinary on the scan?
Lt. JG Hayley Marshall
CMOOOC: No, nothing unusual. Just a regular sore muscle.
IC: Mykl nodded. “Yes, that’s exactly it. It’s nice that you understand, and not surprising, given that you are a doctor. It seems the medical field rarely thinks his choice is irrational, but any others question it.” She straightened up on the bed and reached up to rub her right shoulder joint. “I think I pulled a muscle earlier today dealing with our belongings. Would you check it, please?”
Lt Mykl Najjar
Counselor“Of course,” Hayley completed the scan, finding nothing unusual other then a significant strain of the muscles around the right shoulder. “Definitely a strain,” she replied, setting the tricorder down and picking up a simple protoplaser, “I’ll have that fixed up in two shakes,” she added with a smile as she ran the instrument over the strained area, stopping when it beeped to indicate a completed treatment. “All done, go easy on it for a day or two though, you don’t want to re-injure it. Other than that I would say you are clear for duty Lt.”
Lt. JG. Hayley Marshall
CMOMykl rubbed her healed shoulder. “Oh, that is so much better! Thank you, Dr Marshall. I’ll check with Pic to see if he’s up to date with medical checks. If he isn’t, we’ll be back.” With a smile, she jumped down from the table and headed for the door.
Lt Mykl Anaar
CounselorAn hour later, Mykl walked back in to Sickbay along with her companion. He was taller than her by six or seven inches, had a full head of hair to his shoulders and a moustache and beard. She looked around Dr Marshall and spotted her walking out of her office. The counselor lifted a hand and gave a little wave. “Hi, I told you I would be back if he was due. “Pic, this is Dr Marshall. She’s the one I had my boarding physical with.” The handsome companion looked at Haley and smiled. He inclined his upper body in a modified bow. Pic looked over at Mykl and his hands danced with language.
Lt Mykl Najjar
CounselorHayley smiled in return and waited politely for Pic to finish ‘speaking’ and for Mykl to translate before responding.
Lt. JG Hayley Marshall CMO
She looked from Pic to Marshall, then interpreted. “He says it’s a pleasure to meet you and that he feels in perfect health. Also, that his last physical was between eight and ten months ago.”
Lt Mykl Najjar
CounselorBUMP
“It’s lovely to meet you as well,” She replied to Pic with a smile, “If you are otherwise healthy then a yearly physical is the norm, but anytime after eight months is within protocol.” She paused for a moment than asked, “May I ask how you prefer to be addressed?”
