From time to time on the Command board there are lulls where there isn’t much activity. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, we see those moments as opportunities. As President, I plan to start conversations when there are periods of inactivity or nudge others to do so. We don’t need to fill every calm period with discussion, as that could become a bit much for the membership if it is continuously going on. Nor do we want the topics to be lacking purpose. They should have a positive impact on the club and not solely fill a void.

What sorts of discussions will these be? Perhaps it’d be to brainstorm, for example we could ask everyone what community activity they would like to see. Or it could be a topic to improve or educate ourselves, like by asking for people to bring up moments where they observed someone being an excellent CO.

So why do this? At times there is passionate debate in Command, which can be the only time certain people interact with each other. If we also encourage active, low-stakes conversation it will balance out the stressful nature of other discussions. On the internet it is easy to forget there are actual people behind the words we read, and if we can talk without trying to prove how our opinion is superior my hope is that we’ll realize that more.
