A question for any candidates that wish to answer, whoever they will end up being.

Under what circumstances, if any, would you reject an FComm’s recommendation for a CO appointment?

Hi Adam, for me to reject an FComms recommendation it wouldn’t be a simple matter but it could absolutely happen for a number of reasons. First of all however I would trust that my FComm had a good, solid reason to recommend someone that I may have concerns about, and would be able to address my concerns with positive discussion and show conviction in their choice.

Why might I have those concerns that might lead me to question or even reject a recommendation? The person in question may have a history of leaving the club and then returning, or going AWOL for long periods of time. In that case I may consider that disruptive to the RP of other members and not in the best interests of the ship. The person in question may in my opinion, lack experience, commitment to their previous positions/promises or be considered by some to be immature or disruptive. It could even be the case that a very suitable candidate was passed over for a ‘less suitable’ candidate, or that it appeared to be a “jobs for the boys” recommendation. We are only human and can’t deny it happens. The recommendation may be for someone who has received warnings or bans, and any responsible President should look at that carefully.

In each and every case I would speak to the FComm, explain my thoughts, and they would be asked to explain their choice and answer questions as to the recommendation and concerns I held. Is this person right for this ship? What made you come to that decision? What are the positive points this person brings? Would you be their Executive Officer, a DH or Junior Officer if asked? Captains are appointed to run a ship, support and encourage RP of those around them, does this person fit that requirement?

The President must look at the recommendation and its merits and benefits. Is it the right appointment for the Ship, not just the person. It is the Presidents right to say no if the answers do not satisfy their concerns, and responsibility to do what they believe is best for the club and people on the ship in question. If I honestly believe that a recommendation is not up to scratch, it is my duty to say no, and work with the FComm further to continue the search.
