Physical:
James is Five feet, Ten Inches tall and weighs two hundred and ten pounds. He is built quite solidly with large limbs and wide shoulders but isn’t overweight. He has large hands, but nimble, dextrous fingers and would look as at home under a car changing parts as he would plowing a field. (Both of which he has done and enjoyed). His overall look gives exactly the impression of what he is, a southern boy raised on a farm, used to hard work and hard life, but grateful for both.

Personality:
James is generally easygoing, and not hard to get along with. He can be shy around large groups and has a general dislike of being the center of attention. Though quite intelligent, James often dislikes small talk. He tends to be a man of few words, unless he goes into the typical engineer ‘techno-speak’, or unless he is in a position where he must take charge of a situation. In the case of the latter, James has no problem belting out orders and getting done whatever needs doing. Another aspect of his discomfort with communication is his Oklahoma accent, which often causes people to assume he isn’t very smart; non-humans in particular. (This breeds a sort of discomfort in the presence of non-humans, though he isn’t bigoted by any means.)

Interests:
Even as a small child, James was interested in how and why things worked. He constantly took apart tools and other items to see how they worked. Building and making things was always an activity James enjoyed. His elder brother Joseph taught him to work on automobiles as a kid, and together they restored several vintage cars to street-worthy condition. Once Joseph left to attend Starfleet Academy, James decided to follow him and leave the farm life behind. However, his performance in school and his penchant for working with his hands rather than his higher brain led him to take the road of Enlisted Duty as opposed to Officer Duty. James is also a fan of craft beer and homebrewing.

Faults:
James has a very solid moral value system, but he is stubborn and can sometimes lose his temper. He gets set in his ways and finds it difficult to change his mind once he’s decided. While he is quite loyal, due to his temper and experience as an Enlisted Man, James can sometimes have issues with authority. On one occasion, James was court-martialed for striking a superior. The matter was swept under the rug because of his otherwise exemplary record, and the fact that the offending Officer had caused the death of a subordinate, and close friend of James.

Education and Background:
James was born in the Tulsa suburb of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, to George and Tabitha Franklin. The Franklins had been farmers for generations and were a large family. They owned a large parcel of land not far from Tulsa, though closer to Inola, Oklahoma. George Franklin’s family had grown Wheat, Barley, and Hay for many many years. James grew up with three brothers, a sister, and various stray young people in various amounts of trouble, that his father and mother took in. George Franklin taught his sons (and anyone else who happened to be within earshot) how to work hard, and live honestly. It was a work ethic from another era. Tabitha Franklin insisted that her family be educated. She always told her children to work smart as well as hard. Thus the Franklin brood and their sundry companions were always taught to love learning, literature, math, poetry, music, and many other things aside from an outsized work ethic.
After Primary school, James chose to attend a trade training program in lieu of high school. He began learning more about machinery, manufacturing, and fabrication from this point on. This led to his interest in furthering his education with the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, which allowed him to follow his elder brother into a career with Starfleet.
