Character Biography

TLDR Summary
Hailing from Armstrong City on the Moon, Ensign Oliver W. Sterling, is a dashing, retro-obsessed Security officer who treats space travel like a grand, romantic adventure from an early 20th Century pulp novel. Although possessing the boundless energy of a golden retriever, the intelligence of a boxer dog, and often jumping to wildly incorrect conclusions during investigations, his uncanny piloting intuition, loyalty, and accidental discoveries frequently prove vital to the crew’s success. Beneath his immaculately groomed exterior and eccentric vintage accessories lies a deeply loyal protector and a formidable Academy Fencing champion who will fearlessly charge into danger for his friends.

But if you want to know more read on …

Oliver is the officer who bursts onto the bridge with a theory that is completely wrong, yet somehow contains the one accidental detail the crew needs to solve the mystery or crisis. He is immaculately groomed, intensely polite, and treats space travel (and Starfleet) like a grand, romantic adventure rather than a military operation.

He looks less like a modern Starfleet officer and more like he stepped out of a holonovel about ‘Heroes of the Great War’. He radiates an almost painful amount of earnest energy, is the picture of Academy perfection, and yet he possesses an anachronistic quality, as though he would have been better suited in the time of Kirk, Pike or Archer.

Face and Hair.
He has a classically handsome, open face that is utterly incapable of hiding his emotions. His eyes are a clear, earnest blue, and are frequently wide with astonishment at things the senior staff (and his colleagues) find routine. He has a jawline you could set a watch to, and he is always spotlessly clean-shaven. He probably shaves twice a day (or more) to maintain the look.

His hair is the ultimate expression of regulation adherence. It is sandy-white in colour, and is cut into a severe and neat side-part. It has enough hold-gel in it that a category-five hurricane couldn’t move it. Consequently, it looks slightly placticised under bright corridor.

Physique & Posture
At 22, he is in peak physical condition, possessing the lean, wiry build of an Academy fencing champion, rather than the bulk of a weightlifter.

His posture is excessively upright. He stands in a near-constant state of rigid-attention, chest puffed out slightly, thumbs aligned with the seams of his trousers, as if ready to salute at a moment’s notice. He walks with a brisk, clipped stride.

Uniform & Style
Oliver’s standard-issue Starfleet Security uniform (gold shoulders/collar) is maintained with obsessive care. Not a single thread is out of place, there is never a wrinkle visible. It is tailored impeccably. Though maybe a bit too tightly around the waist and shoulders to emphasise his athletic frame and six-pack.

His Starfleet boots are not merely polished, they are mirrored surfaces that one could signal shuttlecraft with.

The only deviation from regulation (and the hint of his inner speed-demon) appears when he is assigned to shuttle duty or decides he is ‘investigating’. He will produce a vintage-styled, black leather driving gloves with knuckle vents. He insists they are necessary for ‘superior tactile feedback at the helm’. Everyone onboard, however, knows he just thinks they look dashing.

The W in his name doesn’t actually stand for anything. He added it in because it sounded ‘cool’.

Personality Traits

  • Loyalty and Naivety
    • Unshakable Loyalty: Viewing the Senior Staff as heroes from a storybook, he will charge into a warp core breach if the captain as much as looks at one.
    • I say, Sir!: He speaks in a slightly anachronistic way, and is prone to stating the obvious with great profoundness. "Good Grief" "My Gawd"
    • Romantic Heart: He falls easily in love, usually with alien diplomats or mysterious scientists who turn out to be ... something totally different.
  • Curiousity and Piloting
    • Ace Pilot: While he looks stiff, put him behind the helm of a shuttlecraft, runabout, or indeed a Starship, and he becomes a demon. His gloves come out (though no one is entirely sure where he keeps them) and he flies with a terrifying, intuitive flair, treating standard maneuvers like a rally race.
    • Snooping: He has no concept of mind your own business. If he sees a discrepancy, he won't log it, he'll investigate it himself to have a poke around, usually getting captured due to his curiousity.
    • Fashion/Style: Oliver adheres to uniform code, he adds a touch of flair, his polished boots, the tailored uniform, the driving gloves. While off duty and in his civies, he'll always wear a vintage wrist-watch and sometimes a bowler hat and cane.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths Weaknesses
Intuitive Pilot: Can fly a brick if it has thrusters. Jumps to Conclusions: He decides who the "villain" is within 5 minutes based on a hunch (he is usually wrong).
Physical Defense: Excellent at hand-to-hand combat (Academy fencing champion). Gullible: He takes everything at face value. Sarcasm often goes over his head.
Moral Compass: Incorruptible. He genuinely wants to do Good. Tunnel Vision: Once he fixates on a clue, he ignores contradictory data.

His Contradiction
His goofiness disappears when a phaser fight breaks out. He switches to pure instinct and is rather lethal when protecting his friends, crewmates and civilians.

Childhood
Oliver grew up on the Lunar Colony (Armstrong City), a place that was safe, sterile, and oh so boring for a twelve-year-old human boy. To combat the ennui, Oliver, and his two best friends, formed a detective agency. It was modelled after the ancient noir holo-novels Oliver was obsessed with and they called themselves “The Craterville Inquiry Squad“.

The Craterville Inquiry Squad
Headquarters
Oliver’s parents died (in his mind under mysterious circumstances) and he was raised by his uncle. Their base of operations was a decommissioned, hollowed-out Type-6 Shuttlecraft owned by his uncle. Oliver spent his weekends polishing the rusted hull and building ‘secret’ rooms, imagining they were going to warp to the Neutral Zone.

‘Rolls-Royce’
The three investigators had a gold-plated Rolls Royce, and the Craterville Inquiry Squad had Oliver’s pride and joy: a Frankenstein’s monster of a Hover-Skiff. He cobbled it together from spare parts and painted it a garish gold, he called ‘Starfleet Gold’. Technically, it was barely legal, but Oliver flew it with the precision of a stunt pilot, ferrying the team across the lunar surface to ‘crime scenes’; cats stuck in a hydroponics bays and missing holobooks being popular ones for the trio.

The team

  1. T'Lona (The Brains) - She was a young Vulcan neighbour who found the 'detective agency' illogical, but she participated because it provided excellent observational training. She solved 99% of the cases within seconds, but often let Oliver monologue about his (incorrect) theories first because he seemed to enjoy it so much.
  2. Gordy 'Gizmo' Gzrellka (The Tech) - A Bolian boy who could bypass any digital lock on the colony - mostly to steal extra dessert rations from the replicator network.
  3. Oliver Sterling (The Muscle & Wheelman) - He was the self-appointed 'Chief Investigator'. Oliver was the one who knocked on doors, interrogated confused neighbours, claimed he knew Captains Archer, Pike, Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway personally (and helped solve problems for them, and, most importantly, piloted the team's vehicle.

The Case of the Blue Tritanium was the mission that made Oliver realise that he had to join Starfleet and give them the benefit of his investigative prowess. Here, then, is the monologue that Oliver recorded after the case was finished interspersed with T’Lona’s private log. She said she encrypted the log to spare Oliver Sterling’s feelings.

OLIVER: So there we were, staring into the abyss of Scrubbing Sector 4. The air was thick with the smell of … well, ozone and mystery and a dash of adventure! I turned to my associates and said, ‘Chaps, do you hear that? That wailing sound? It’s unmistakably the moan of a Supspace Banshee trapped in the ventilation shaft!

T’LONA (Private Log):Subject Sterling has once again misidentified that auditory input. Agent Gzrelka identified the ‘wailing’ correctly as a loose fan belt on the atmospheric recyler. The tension has been adjusted with a hydro-spanner. Total repair time: 4.7 seconds. Sterling remains convinced we are hunting a ghost.

OLIVER: Gordy was trembling, bless him, but I pressed on, by Jove! We followed the ectoplasmic trail, which looked suspiciously like glowing blue slime, deepend into the complex. My instincts were screaming that we were about to stumble upon a spectral interdimensional rift! I kept my knowledge to myself so as not to terrify my two companions.

T’LONA (Private Log):The ‘slime’ is industrial lubricant mixed with traces of refined tritanium dust. The specific blue luminescence indicates a purity level of 97.4%. This is not ectoplasm, it is high-grade stolen ore leaking from a breach in a cargo container. I have scanned the area. There are three life forms ahead. None of them are ghosts. They are, logically, smugglers and we are, logically, in trouble.

OLIVER: And then - AHA! We cornered them! Three shadowy figures hunched over the glowing rift. I didn’t hesitate. I stepped into the light, puffed out my chest and gave them the ‘Captain Picard Voice’ I’d been practicing in the mirror. My French accent was well done, if I say so myself. ‘Halt!’ I cried. ‘By the power of the Craterville Inquiry Squad, I command you to return to your dimension!

T’LONA (Private Log):Sterling has … revealed our position. He is attempting to arrest three armed large Orion Syndicate extractors using a flashlight and … aggressive posturing. The probability of him being stunned is 94.7%. I am current routing a distress signal to Colony Security on an encrypted channel, masked as a routine maintenance ping so the smugglers do not intercept it. On a side note, Sterling doesn’t sound at all like Captain Picard.

OLIVER: They were terrified! They thought that Captain Picard was there! I could see it in their eyes. But they were desperate creatures. One of them, clearly possessed by the Banshee, lunged and before I could employ my Judo chop, I was … tactically restrained.

T’LONA (Private Log):They tied him to a pipe … immediately!

OLIVER: But, the Crater Investigation Squad never says die! While T’Lona was paralysed with fear in the shadows, poor girl, she’s not built for action like I am, I realised it was up to me! I performed a dislocating thumb escape, very painful and very heroic, and made a dash for the Hover-Skiff

T’LONA (Private Log):I allowed the smugglers to see a glimpse of my shadow. This distracted them long enough for Sterling to wiggle out of a knot that was frankly, poorly tied. Gzrelka was able to hot-wire the bay doors to open, creating an exit path. Sterling believes he escaped. Gzrelka and I essentially opened the gate for him.

OLIVER: I fired up the engines! The roar of that skiff echoed like a dragon! I chased their hauler into the tunnels. It was neck and neck! I knew if I didn’t stop them, the Banshee would be unleashed upon the colony! Was it the Banshee that took my parents? If so, I avenged them! I did the only thing a Sterling could do! I rammed tem! I turned the wheel hard to port and used my skiff as a battering ram. OF JUSTICE! HAZZAH!

T’LONA (Private Log):Sterling’s piloting was … highly irregular. He entered the maintenance tunnel at a velocity that exceeded safety ratings by 300%. While his decision to ram a vehicle ten times his mass was illogical, the angle of impact sheared the haulers stabiliser fin. It was … an impressive display of kinetic physics. I have calculated the odds of him surviving that maneuver. They were 1 in 4,700.

OLIVER: And as the smoke cleared, and Security from Starfleet arrived to mop up, the Chief looked at me. She didn’t say it, she didn’t have to, because I know what she was thinking: That boy … is a hero!

T’LONA (Private Log):The Security Chief is currently shouting at Sterling. She has used the word ‘idiot’ four times, in four different languages, one of which is French. However, the smugglers are in custody. The case is closed. Sterling is currently bleeding from the nose, yet he is smiling. Sterling is … fascinating. End log

The Starfleet Security Chief who took the smugglers into custody didn’t reprimand Oliver for his reckless behaviour. She did use four languages and called him an idiot in each of them, however. She looked at the battered hover-skiff, then at the bruised but beaming boy, and said, “That was some flying, kid. Dangerous, stupid, completely unauthorised. You’ll fit right in at the Academy.”

His future was cemented by that moment.

  • Romancing the Badge: Oliver didn't want to be a scientist and explore nebula dust, a doctor and fix people, or an engineer fixing conduits. He wanted to be the protector. He fell for the romantic ideal of the Security Officer: standing between his crewmates and the dark.
  • He's the Sidekick: Oliver knows he's not a genius like T'Lona or a tech-wizard like Gordy. But he realises that every great captain, whether Archer, Pike, Kirk, Picard, Sisko or Janeway needs an Assistant - someone loyal, brave, and willing to fly the shuttle into the heart of the nearest nebula.
Oliver joined Starfleet not to explore the galaxy ... but to solve it ... one misunderstood clue at a time.

Here is an excerpt from Ensign Oliver Sterling’s Starfleet Academy file. It highlights the tension between his undeniable skill and his tendency to treat standard flight operations like a car chase from Early 20th Century Earth that he seems to be intrigued by.

STARFLEET ACADEMY // STUDENT RECORD
Subject: Cadet Oliver Sterling Department: Security / Flight Control (Minor) Status: PROBATIONARY GRADUATION (See Note)

Incident Report: SA-994-Alpha
Location: Flight Range 4 (Saturn Orbit) Infraction: Unauthorised Modification of Academy Property; Violation of Safety Protocols.

Description of Event: During a standard orbital survey exam, Cadet Sterling disabled the safeties on the impulse governors of Shuttlecraft Copernicus. He then attempted to manually “tune” the plasma mix in the manifold using a hand-spanner while in mid-flight. When questioned, the Cadet claimed the shuttle “sounded a bit throaty in the low revs” and he wanted to “smooth out the idle.”

Cadet’s Defense: “Sir, one must listen to the machine! She was coughing like a Bolian on a damp morning. I used to know a Bolian, we called him Gizmo, he was part of the ‘Craterville Inquiry Squad’, and even though it rarely got damp on the moon, he coughed a bit if he forgot his breathing aparatus. But getting back to Hastings, I simply gave her a bit of room to breathe. I believe my modifications resulted in a 4.7% increase in efficiency, did they not?”

Disciplinary Action: Two weeks confined to quarters; suspension of Holodeck privileges. (Instructor Note: The efficiency increase was actually 12%, but we cannot encourage cadets to hot-wire warp capable vessels.)

Incident Report: SA-102-Delta
Location: San Francisco Spacedock Approach Infraction: Reckless Endangerment; Improper Use of Thrusters (“Stunting”).

Description of Event: While piloting a transport skiff for a VIP diplomatic delegation, Cadet Sterling disengaged the auto-docking computer. Instead of a standard approach vector, he executed a high-velocity “drift” maneuver, swinging the aft of the shuttle around 180 degrees to slide perfectly into the docking clamp using only lateral thrusters and inertia.

Cadet’s Defense: “The docking computer is painfully slow, Sir! And I had a hunch—just a feeling, really—that the Ambassador was late for his lunch. I was merely expediting the process. It was a smooth ride, wasn’t it? I didn’t spill a drop of his tea!”

Disciplinary Action: Official Reprimand. Mandatory retraining on “Standard Docking Procedures.” (Instructor Note: The Ambassador was terrified, but requested Sterling as his driver for the rest of the week.)

Incident Report: SA-229-Omega (“The Mars Incident”)
Location: Utopia Planitia Yards Infraction: Unauthorised Use of Vehicle; Trespassing in Restricted Airspace.

Description of Event: Cadet Sterling “borrowed” a high-performance Peregrine-class courier ship without filing a flight plan. He claimed he saw a “suspicious flashing light” near the construction skeleton of a new Nebula-class ship and believed it was a saboteur using Morse code. He engaged in a 20-minute pursuit of a target that turned out to be a malfunctioning welding drone.

Cadet’s Defense: “It was blinking ‘S-O-S,’ Sir! Or perhaps ‘S-A-U-S-A-G-E’… my Morse is a bit rusty. But one cannot ignore a distress call! What if it had been a spy? The chase was essential to the security of the fleet! And I did return the ship with a full tank of deuterium.”

Disciplinary Action: stripped of “Cadet Leader” rank. 50 hours of remedial maintenance duty scrubbing plasma vents.

Academy Board Final Assessment
Instructor: Commander Derfla (Flight Operations)

“Cadet Sterling is a paradox. He flies with the intuition of a seasoned ace but the common sense of a Golden Retriever crossed with a Boxer Dog. He treats millions of credits’ worth of starship technology like a soapbox derby racer.

Technically, I should expel him for the unauthorised modifications alone. However, his reflexes are in the top 0.1% of the class, and his loyalty is absolute. I am approving his graduation, but I am assigning him to a Captain with patience. And strong nerves.”
