Shock

Official biography
Shock was born in the rural Vulcan town of K’taal, 220 kilometres inland from Raal. The younger of two brothers, he displayed early aptitude in suus mahna, the Vulcan martial art. He studied Earth studies at university, graduating in 2382, and served at the Vulcan representation to the Federation Council in Paris until his entrance into Starfleet Academy in 2387. He graduated in 2390.

Shock’s early Starfleet career included a posting aboard the all-Vulcan USS Raal, where he received an early commendation and rose to acting chief of security. He later transferred to the USS Endeavour, serving under Denobulan chief of security Malwax, who became a lasting mentor. Promoted after successful department-head qualification, he joined the USS Athena as chief of security in 2398.

On the Athena, he developed key relationships, including a close friendship with Marishka, the bar matron, and a complex, emotionally charged rapport with the ship’s intelligence chief, Faye Calloway. He underwent therapy with Counsellor Janna Kingston to process unresolved feelings from a prior pon farr, including lingering guilt over his connection with the Andorian officer T’Kar. He maintains deep, unresolved emotional ties to T’Kar, which he keeps compartmentalised behind professional boundaries.

In February 2400, he took emergency leave to care for his terminally ill father, Loss. Though he did not return in time to say goodbye, he remained on Vulcan to oversee the estate. In mid-2400, his old mentor Malwax, now captain of the USS Ayarim, requested his service as first officer. Shock accepted and was promoted to lieutenant commander in March and full commander in December.

In June 2401, Shock was unexpectedly assigned command of the USS Leviathan.

Personality
Shock is considered unusually personable for a Vulcan. While firmly grounded in Vulcan logic, he exhibits a curiosity and social adaptability rare among his species. He is particularly interested in politics, cross-cultural communication, history, and behavioural psychology.

He keeps a handwritten diary to maintain his penmanship in Vulcan script. A practitioner of meditation and regular exercise, he explores Terran, Vulcan, and other cultures through his collection of rare loose-leaf teas. He feels strong protectiveness toward children and maintains a soft-spoken empathy, particularly toward junior officers.

Among the personal items in his quarters are two crayon drawings given to him by a young Klingon boy, majQu’, whom he and colleagues rescued, along with the boy’s family, during a civilian evacuation in disputed territory. Shock feels particularly protective of children, and the drawings are among the few personal touches in his otherwise minimalist quarters.

He speaks, reads and writes Vulcan (standard and Raal dialect), Federation Standard, as well as passable Romulan and Klingon. Picked up some French in Paris. Upon discovering Chinese teas, he began also studying Chinese (to a more modest proficiency).

Shock was born as Afel in 2356 as the fraternal twin brother of Lavel. In 2373, at the onset of the Dominion War, he was enrolled in the V’Shar Academy under the name Afel. A stillbirth recorded in 2363 within his extended family was later appropriated to construct the legal identity “Shock”. This allowed full deniability and infiltration into Starfleet structures. His university degree in Earth Studies (awarded 2378) was largely credited from prior V’Shar coursework, with only the thesis produced independently.

1. V’Shar Academy and USS Raal Placements (2373–2382)
Studied Earth history, psychology, and Starfleet strategic patterns to prepare for deep integration in Starfleet and Federation environments. Assigned to the Raal for space operation exposure, participating in joint observation and intelligence missions during and after the Dominion War. Granted clandestine Starfleet Ensign rank in 2378 to enable cross-service cooperation.

2. Vulcan Delegation, Federation Council, Paris (2382–2387)

Cover: Cultural Attaché, Earth Studies Division. Actual Role: Undercover intelligence agent monitoring anti-Federation sentiment. Tasked with identifying and undermining ideological extremism among human supremacist groups and foreign manipulation, particularly from Romulan and Changeling sources. Mission continued under diplomatic immunity in Paris.

3. Starfleet Academy (2387–2390)

Cover: Cadet (San Francisco Campus). Actual Role: In vivo counter-intelligence operative

Mission focused on monitoring for Romulan infiltration attempts in the wake of the supernova, Changeling subversion of instructor corps, and anomalous quantum phenomena possibly linked to Q. Filed 41 classified reports.

4. USS Raal Reassignment (2390–2395)

Cover Rank: Ensign; Acting Chief of Security; Actual Rank: Lieutenant.

Returned to Raal post-Academy for formal Starfleet service under continued V’Shar affiliation. Served both overtly and covertly, maintaining dual reporting channels.

5. USS Endeavour (2395–2398)

Cover Rank: Lieutenant (junior grade); Actual Rank: Lieutenant

Assigned to a conventional Starfleet posting to maintain integration credibility. Mentored by Denobulan Chief of Security Malwax, who remained, at this time, unaware of full V’Shar status but recognized Shock’s strategic depth and emotional restraint.

6. USS Athena (2398–2400)

Position: Chief of Security; Cover: First formal head-of-department role

Served with distinction and formed key relationships. During this time, he maintained a covert awareness of intelligence anomalies while officially focused on departmental leadership. His therapy under Counsellor Janna Kingston focused on his emotional entanglement with T’Kar, a former Andorian colleague with whom he had engaged during pon farr. The relationship, though brief, left unresolved psychological traces. Shock considers this period as formative in understanding his own vulnerabilities. Also engaged in a temporal displacement over 800 years.

During this time, Malwax, now captain, was given higher security clearances upon entering more special operations, and became aware of Shock’s actual history. Rather than feeling tricked, Malwax saw this as evidence of Shock’s skills, intelligence, and loyalty, and decided to try and recruit him.

7. USS Ayarim (2400–2401)

Cover: First Officer under Captain Malwax; Actual Role: Intelligence-integrated operations coordinator

Recruited by Malwax for a special operations command role. Participated in clandestine exfiltration and containment missions, including memory-erasure missions on pre-warp worlds, cultural contamination prevention, intelligence protocol testing. Filed ethical protest reports five times.

8. USS Leviathan (2401)

Rank: Captain

In June 2401, Shock was unexpectedly assigned command of the USS Leviathan after the intended captain and chief of operations “dissolved” in a strange phenomenon. Among his few personal decorations in his quarters are two drawings by the young Klingon boy majQu’, a reminder of a successful joint humanitarian operation that impacted him deeply.

- On the USS Endeavour, he was a security officer under Malwax (a Denobulan security chief). Malwax had mentored Shock.
- Shock keeps a couple of drawing made by the Klingon young boy majQu’, whom Shock, with colleagues, had rescued along with the boy’s parents.

- He is sexually and romantically attracted to men, with some feelings still lingering for an Andorian colleague, T’Kar, whom he, in his own view, took advantage of during his last pon farr. He processed this experience in therapy under Counsellor Kingston.
- Shock inherited his Vulcan-style formalwear from maternal grandfather, who died in 2397, with whom he bore much likeness
- He does not like coffee, but he does like tea and has a collection of loose-leaf unreplicated teas in his office (ranging from Earth teas, mainly of East Asian variety (particularly tieguanyin, dahongpao and longjing) but also Earl Grey of Picard fame, Kelpien tea, Vulcan teas, Andorian ash-leaf, and so on).
