Physical Profile:
Like most Starfleet Officers, Benem is physically fit. His short jet black hair is unruly, usually sticking up no matter how much he combs it down. The “spots” typical of his people are as dark as his hair and a little larger and further separated than most Trill, running from his hairline, down his neck and down to his toes. Contrasting the dark hair and “spots,” Ben’s eyes are brilliant green. He has little to no control of his roguish smile and the look of mischief in his eyes.

Personality Profile:
Most trill are even tempered and level headed… Benem is not, though he would very much like to be. He can’t help it–within him there’s this urge to make things interesting, just for fun. Rules are there for a reason, sure, but just because they shouldn’t be broken doesn’t mean they can’t be… bent a little, if the situation calls for it. Most importantly, Ben is still young, and eager to prove himself to Star Fleet. He struggles with authority to a degree but is dutybound enough to know when he should shut up, and knows that one day his mouth is going to get him into trouble.

On first glance Ben comes off as a bit cocky, but he’s a pilot. He isn’t mean spirited and is actually rather friendly, generous and trustworthy as a friend, even if he can get a competitive and compulsive at times. Being naturally playful, he does appear to be a bit of a flirt at times. At heart, he’s an explorer, and prefers to talk things out instead of fighting, but will if he feels that he has to. Ben’s got what it takes to be an amazing Starfleet Officer, but he’s going to need some polish.

Background:
Khema and Sestri met as Initiates of the Symbiosis Commission. A gifted engineer, Khema seemed to be a perfect choice for joining, but after a heated exchange with another member he was kicked out. Though he was dropped from the program, he attempted to remain supportive of his partner Sestri, who would eventually go on to be approved and joined with Kuen. Soon after the joining, she learned that she was pregnant with Khema’s child, but even this could not mend the relationship between them. Sestri remained with Khema and their son Benem for a little over a year before it became unbearable for her and she left to live her new life, far from Khema’s resentful looks.

Benem remembers very little of his homeworld. Instead, his earliest memories are of a civilian freighter that Khema got a job on for a few years, eventually becoming it’s Chief Engineer for a time. Eventually, he was offered a position as Chief of Operations on a small craft repair station in Earth’s orbit. As luck would have it, there was a modest Trill community in New Zealand, which suited the small family. As time went on, Khema found himself more and more consumed by his work and with less and less time for his son, and when he did have free time he preferred to spend it with a bottle. Benem would learn to live with this less than ideal situation, and kept himself occupied by getting into as much trouble a boy could get himself into.

It began, mostly, at school–after all, it was the easiest place to act out, but even then that became routine and commonplace eventually. Once he realized his father didn’t care beyond the annoyance of messages from Benem’s teachers, the young man mostly stopped caring for school. Truthfully, he was much more preoccupied with spending time with his friends–mostly the local maori kids, since trill parents didn’t care much for “Khema’s wild child.” He found a love for surfing and everything that went faster than his own two legs could take him, exploring the islands on antique motorbikes, both of which he has holodeck programs for.

At the age of sixteen he fell in love for the first time, though he’s had a girlfriend or two before (and he’d thought he’d been in love then, but this was different). At 3.6 meters long, the Type-15 shuttlepod “Hawkeye” could barely get off the ground but what a beauty she was. It had been an impulse buy by Khema, who ended up never using it. Benem knew enough to get started and with this new hobby he finally began to develop an interest for school again and actually began to excel. With help from his friends, he managed to get the shuttlepod in the air again, only to be immediately detained for piloting without a license. But that was it, his first taste, and he’d loved it and he knew right then and there that then on his goal was to become the best pilot in the galaxy, and no one was going to stop him!

Well, Starfleet Academy did, at least for a little while. Though Ben’s grades were good enough to get his foot in the door and he aced the entry exam, his record left much to be desires, in particular his recent arrest for an unlicensed joyride. Discouraged, Benem bummed around the solar system after getting his license for a while, flying the “Hawkeye” and improving his knowledge of the craft. Eventually, Khema got tired of his son being a waste of space and found him a post as a shuttle pilot on Jupiter Station. There he met Commander Crowley, a longtime veteran of Star Fleet. The two stuck up a friendship and it was Crowley who motivated Ben to reapply for the Academy, this time with the Commander’s letter of recommendation.

Benem thrived at the Academy, for the most part. He spent a semester of his second year on Venus training to fly in erratic weather conditions and another in the Belt, dodging rocks. Noah became one of his good friends at the Academy, and usually found time to hang out, even when their courses put them on different paths. Now, nearing the end of his time as a Cadet, Ben has been assigned to Challenger…
