“Talk about my piloting skills, of course,” he answered with a smirk. Ben leaned forward, “I like having fun. I know that’s a pretty blanket statement, but it’s true. I have a few holodeck programs since forever–a lone beach with the best waves, a dirt bike track, stuff like that–but what I mean is that I enjoy doing things. New things, new experiences.” He shrugged as he leaned back into his chair, “I guess that leads back to your first question, doesn’t it? I expect to gain experience, a new experience, and enjoy doing what’d I’ve been preparing myself to do for the last five years.”

“Now that,” she pointed with a grin, “is a good answer. New experiences are certainly something you’ll get on a starship - though it’s not something we can guarantee every day of course,” she added with a laugh.

“Since you mentioned the last five years, let me ask what may be a more personal question.” She shifted, bringing her legs out from behind her and resting her feet on the floor. “Most Trill I have met apply with the Symbiosis Commission at some point - I did not notice a mention of your application in your file.” She studied him for a moment. “Is symbiosis something you’ve considered?”

Ben didn’t answer at first, mulling over the question for a moment as he drained his mug of it’s liquid contents. “I’m not sure,” he answered, trying to be truthful as he could. “I’ve never really thought that it was a possibility, I suppose, since my father was rejected. He, ah, sort of hates the Symbiosis Commission. That’s why we moved to Earth, to get away from oppression,” he made air quotes with his fingers, implying that it was something his father said often. “I’ve never met a joined trill. I’m told my mother is joined, or was. I’ve never met her either…”

The young man began to feel uncomfortable, notably shifting in his seat. Time to change the subject, “So, do you think that if I ask Captain Davis very nicely she’ll let me take the conn? I’ll even do graveyard if I have to!”
