From the tape, it was clear that Ressis had been the one who sent the initial distress signal, but when the message made its way back from the station, it was Charl who spoke. “Greetings,” she responded with a weak attempt at a smile through the static of the poor signal. “I am … someone was .... attention.”

Even though it was simply a voice link (OOC: I think?), Emmy turned quickly and centered herself in front of the view screen out of habit. She had never been good at concentrating on voices to begin with and the static-filled message was posing a particular challenge. Her eyes closed as she concentrated and then spoke slowly in response, “this is Captain Davis of the USS Challenger. We received a distress signal from your station. What is your status?”

Max made his way over towards Cadet Taurean as the Captain talked with the mining station. Even after all of these years, mining operations still had great amount of risk. More of the work was automated, but there was still a lot of variables that just couldn’t be accounted for.
Stepping up besides the Cadets station, Max lowered his voice as the Captain continued trying to talk to the station. “See what you can do to try and clear up the signal. Can you tell if the signal is being broadcast like that, or does it just not have enough power?”
Cmdr. Harkness - XO
“I believe the signal just doesn’t have enough power to escape unadulterated through the EM storms in the moon’s atmosphere, Commander. Nor do I think would we be able to penetrate those storms with our comms,” Cadet Taurean responded. “I can try to clear the interference but there’s no guarantee the message hasn’t been broken down into static during transmission.”
Working at his terminal, Anders took several seconds in attempt to clear up the signal by redistributing the electromagnetic interference througout the rest of the message; in that case, the signal static would be evened out to a low growl in the background of the message, with the speaker’s voice more noticeably audible. At least, he hoped so. The image was less likely to come back clean, but there was always a chance for luck to come into play, the cadet figured.
“We’ll know if this works in twenty-two seconds,” he said aloud to the bridge as a whole.

“Good thinking Cadet. Once we get this cleaned up, also start thinking about how we can boost the signal once we are in orbit. We are going to need reliable communications, and potentially transport, through that same interference.”
Cmdr. Harkness - XO
As she waited to see if the communications link cleared up, Emmy tapped her comm badge and relayed the information they had so far to the senior staff. Even though they were two days out, it didn’t seem necessary to call a staff meeting to discuss what was going on. It was plenty of time to get everyone situated and ready to hit the ground, er, station running when they got there.

“Hopefully we can an updated blueprint of the facility, with where the incident happened. So we have an idea of what we are getting into,” Max said stepping towards the middle of the bridge.
Cmdr. Harkness - XO
Completing her communication to the senior staff, Emmy nodded in agreement. “I’d like each department to have a plan of attack for when we get there, subject to change as we get more information,” she instructed, inclining her head toward the view screen as if to indicate where the information would come from.

45 seconds after Cadet Taurean’s proclamation the signal cleared a little. It was less choppy and there was a rudimentary “picture” but it still wasn’t great. Clean enough to have a simple conversation. Probably not clean enough to discuss the merits of Klingon poetry, however.
Charl tried again, “Ah ..... I am glad some… got a hold of us. These ..orms have made ge..ing out of .ere a bit proble…ic and with ..... is down in … mines… We would sure like to … out of … before anything hap…s to the rest of … station.” Just then there was a rumble on the other side of the wall and a curse from the station chief. “… just us and a ..... rob....”
GM Wombat
“You and a what?” Emmy demanded, stepping even closer to the view screen as if that would help her to distinguish the jumbled words.

And just like that the signal was lost, the interference too great to penetrate.

Frantically, Anders scrambled to try and retain the signal, to no avail. Though Starfleet taught him not to jump to conclusions, he could safely say that the miners were in immediate need of assistance. And it pained him, that Challenger was still days out from the mine.
“We’ve lost them, Captain.” He said, pausing to let out a distressed sigh before adding, “If we draw auxiliary power from the main deflector array, we could fire a directed EMP waveguide that should counterbalance and override the orbital interference, at least momentarily. If they’re still attempting to reach us, we could set up unfettered contact.”
The adrenaline began to pump as he finished speaking, and the pain flared up along his right arm. Gritting his teeth, the cadet ignored it and awaited further orders.

Emmy’s own distressed sigh was caught at her lips and she blew out a light puff of air instead. “Go ahead,” she nodded in response to the scientist. It would be best if they could get more information directly from the source, but she couldn’t help but think that it was unlikely they would be able to get through the interference. Instead, they would simply be flying blind into a potential volatile situation. Life was certainly not boring aboard Academy ships.

“We are going to have to try and squeeze some more speed out of the engines. We’ll be able to get a better signal as we get closer as well.” There really wasn’t a lot of good options for them, especially still being 2 days out.
Cmdr. Harkness - XO
Emmy nodded in agreement. Somethings might just have to wait the two days for them to get there.

Cadet Rainns looked around from his tactical station for a few moments before he spoke. “Is it advisable that we run headlong into a scenario in which we are not aware of the extenuating circumstances?” he wondered out loud. “Shouldn’t we notify starfleet and wait for orders? We are just an academy starship after all.”
