“And I’ll do it sir.” Douglas tried again to relax. “It’s a miracle that I passed in the first place, I made every teacher hate me in first week of me getting. I’ll do what I’ve been trained to do sir of course but I just hope the rest of the crew can accept me.” Douglas stood up still looking uncomfortable. “May I use your replicator?”

Garth raised an eyebrow. “I’m curious as to why your previous professors had such a distaste for you. I think you will find that on a Starfleet ship, the level of tolerance is much higher. After all, there are peoples of all cultures. My own, for instance. Humans tend to be off-put by tellarites due to our bluntness and combativeness. Of course I do my part to compromise as well, but there must be an understanding that everyone is different. Ultimately, we’re all here for the same reason.”

Garth motioned toward the industrial replicator inlaid with one of the walls. “Go ahead. Although if you’re about to order food or drink, don’t. This is a science lab, not a cafeteria.”

OOC: Next lesson! The thread is getting a bit long, which makes it rather annoying to scroll through, especially on mobile. To help with this, we do “snipping”. Snipping is where you delete some of the less recent posts in the reply. To do this, you’ll delete the lines of your response post with the most arrows ( > ) next to them, including the “posted by” line at the top. I have snipped your first post in the thread as an example, and written (snip) under it to indicate that there is more to the thread if someone wants to go back further to see its entirety. Give it a shot, see if you can snip my first post in the thread off in your reply.

As Douglas was walking towards the industrial replicator. “My professor’s distaste came from my apparent ‘relentless need to be right’ although I disagree with that statement.” James hit the button on the replicator and requested. “Long range Refractor telescope, I prefer looking at the stars, not just scanning them.”

(Cadet. Douglas. Science)

Garth grunted. “There’s nothing wrong with a need to be right, as long as you are willing to put in the work to ensure that you actually are, rather than blinded by devotion to some falsehood.”

“Of course, of course. I always made sure but the professors were still angry, maybe it was how I said it” Douglas questioned. “But that’s beside the point.”

Garth’s eyebrows raised in surprise. “We seem to have that interest in common, cadet. I have been working on a prototype portable interstellar telescope of my own design. Meant for observing and recording stellar phenomenon in immaculate detail. Have you tinkered with any modifications to that long range refractor telescope yourself?”

OOC: Go ahead and try snipping again in your reply! I snipped down another post as an example.

Douglas grew intrigued smile. “Yes, I’ve increased the focal range and added an adaptive convex for increased sharpness. What have you done to yours?”

OOC: I tried to snip, is it ok?

Garth grunted as he rose unceremoniously from the stool and hobbled over to the other side of the lab, picking up a forearm-length, thick cylinder of metal to bring it back over to Douglas. “Of course the expected upgrades to clarity, but I’ve also been experimenting with introducing a pseudo-AI to make it at least partially automated, able to adjust itself as circumstances in the cosmos change.”

As Douglas stood he extended the Refractor Telescope from 50cm to 200cm and spoke. “Mine isn’t exactly meant for interstellar, It’s meant for extreme precision in interplanetary range. I’m still working on it. I haven’t installed an AI because I prefer findin’ what I’m lookin’ for”

The tellarite looked Douglas up and down. “While you’re aboard Challenger, you’re required to complete a personal project as a condition of your graduation, approved by me. Is refining the refractor telescope your project of choice?”

OOC: Yes, great job snipping! The last thing on that front: when there are only two people in the thread, it’s easy to snip and I usually snip down to the last 6 posts, as I’ve done here. But in threads with more than two characters, such as main sim threads, it’s important not to snip too much. In those threads, you want to make sure that every character participating in the thread still has one post when you snip. Additionally, there may be very important things that happen in the thread that you want to delay snipping for quite a while. When we get you introduced to the main sim threads it’ll make more sense!

Douglas replied excitedly “Yes, if I can of course. Sir.”

OOC: Alright, round about where for big posts?

Garth nodded in approval. “Be sure that you complete the project on your own time. During your duty hours, you will work with a multidisciplinary team to complete the mission of the Challenger as determined by the captain and communicated by me.”

As Garth spoke, the doors to the science lab opened and a slender vulcan man entered. Garth grunted. “Ah, NEnsign Vool. Please get Cadet Douglas situated with his shift schedule.” The vulcan nodded and extended a PaDD to Douglas, containing the details of his responsibilities. “Any other questions, Cadet?” Garth said as he had already turned back to the experiments he had been working on when Douglas had entered.

OOC: NEs are “Nameless Ensigns”. Nameless ensigns often do have names, but they’re usually disposable members of the crew that aren’t particularly important. NEs are often employed by GMs in main sims, but they can also be used in side sims from time to time, but usually they are secondary or tertiary characters to what is happening between the “main characters”. When someone introduces an NE, it becomes their character. You can’t control someone else’s NE unless they give you permission. So NE Vool is an extension of my writing, and as such only I know how I envision his mannerisms and actions. I would caution you about using NEs too often, however. The best threads are usually had between main characters, but they can be used as background people if needed.
