Aatami smiled about the comment about his nationality. “No? Then you haven’t lived , Doctor. We are a great people. And very healthy. No diseases, no predispositions. Very healthy as far back as my great-great-grandfather. He, however, died very young.”

“OK. Well your scans are good. Of course I can’t just say you’re fine and let you go. As I do see myself as a shrink for the ship, let’s talk about your past.” Usus sat down in one of his chairs.

Aatami smiled and said “Sure. What would you like to know?” he responded.

“Why did you join Star Fleet? What drove you towards it? Family?” He asked as he took out a Padd.

The normally boisterous and outgoing helmsman faltered slightly, and he looked at the floor for a moment before composing himself. “In a way, yes. My brother was in the Embassy on Vulcan when it was bombed. He was in Star Fleet. So you could say that is what brought me to Star Fleet. Well, that and I look really good in this uniform.” he said with a soft chuckle and half-hearted smile.

Usus looked at him and gave a condoling smile. “A lot of people joined because of that bombing. Was it revenge that drove you or wanting to carry on his service on Star Fleet?”

“Revenge? No, that wasn’t the reason. Besides, it is not as if that is an act I could exact revenge for. No, my desire was to simply to become something that my brother would have been proud of, and he could be very demanding let me tell you. Yes. If I can do that… ” and shook his head in the affirmative, more to himself than to the Medical officer, “…then I will have fulfilled my goal.”

“That is a good goal. Keep that in your mind in everything you do. It’ll guide you on the right path. I’m here because the war. That was a very scary time.” He looked down.

“So I have surmised speaking with others who were involved.” Mayasnikov said somewhat softly. He then took a deep breath and looked at the CMO. “So how do you feel about working with people who made a treaty with the Romulans?” Myasnikov asked. It wasn’t a callous question on his part. As an analyst and negotiator, he was trying to find out if there were any potential roadblocks to dealing with the colonists on the part of the crew sent to take on that very task.

“They didn’t have a choice. It was either that or watch as everything they loved was killed. Those people had to adapt to survive.”

“I don’t think they are lying. I don’t think anything. At least, not until we have had the chance to speak with them in depth. They have not been in contact with the Federation in years. They have been in contact with the Romulans. I think it would serve us best to not assume anything until we know their disposition and how their society has weathered the war and the aftermath.”
