Shawe took one more look over the city of Rome that was his home before joining the terran fleet. It had been years since he had last breathed the air here, before the ‘hazing’ that went wrong. The then chief engineer was responsible for the radiation burns that covered half of his face. He was dealt with. That’s how he ended up here. The ship was boarding today, and he decided to get one last look out of the view of his apartment, one of many skyrises that made the more modern city, with a decent view of the coloseum through his living room window. The flag of the Terran Empire flying high over the building.

“It’s time,” he said to himself as he put on the shirt of his uniform, covering the continued burn down the shoulder to about halfway to the elbow, and made his way out of his quarters and report in to the captain of his new vessel.

He made his way to the taxi surface of shuttles to make his way to the brand new vessel. He couldn’t help but get a little excited. He was about to get his hands on something new. But this time, he knew he would have to watch his own back. He technically killed someone for his promotion, after all. Even if it was someone planning a mutiny, Shawe didn’t know that. He feigned that he did, and it was all to protect the captain and the Empire.

“Is the new ship boarding yet?” he asked the closest person, not caring if it was someone that worked here or not.

“None of my business,” a man responded. “Ask someone who cares,” he said. Thomas shrugged and made his way to a shuttle pilot who was ferrying people over to the ship and said “we’re just about to go, you’re just in time.”

The next few hours, Thomas just looked over Terran one more time, it was probably going to be a while before he saw it again. He had work to do, and a ship waiting for him to look after.

When he arrived, Shawe stepped out into the shuttlebay with one of the first crew loads over. He walked over to a console, one that was familiar from his previous posting. “Computer, what is the current location of Captain Kaldland,” he asked the computer.

=^=The Captain is located in his ready room=^= The aggressive voice of the computer responded.

Thomas wasted absolutely no time making his way to the captain’s ready room. Along the way, he looked through the ship at the final work being done and said “If this ship is not ready in time, I’ll make burns like mine the least of your troubles,” he said, his voice a very gravely tone. He made his way to the turbolift to go to the ready room, where he pressed the chime to announce he was waiting.

“Enter” The voice behind the door said. Inside was a simple office, desk with two chairs for guests and a single behind, in which sat a man. He had dark hair that was starting to gray at the temples. His eyes were a dim icy blue and had a cold dead stare. The desk was simple, a computer terminal and a few PaDDs. On the right side was a small display which held an axe, small handheld weapon with beautiful carvings into the wooden handle and the steel itself was decorated as well.

After a moment the man looked up at his Chief Engineer “Lieutenant Shawe” He said matter-of-factly “Welcome onboard” His icy blue eyes stared coldly at the engineer.

Shawe heard the matter-of-fact tone and he instantly felt like this would be at least a decent captain to serve. “Thank you, sir,” he said also sharply as he stepped into the room. He didn’t take note of any of the decoration that was done by the captain, and it was none of his business. “Reporting as your chief engineer, captain,” Shawe said, keeping his answers short and sharp.

Gunnar nodded then pointed to one of his chairs “Sit” It was not an offer “I have your military record but I like to hear these things directly from my officers so tell me about it” Although his words were typically Terran in nature his oddly conversational tone seemed more pleasant although for most that was even more unnerving, as the saying goes ‘Never trust a kind Terran’

“Well, the Hellcat was my last posting,” Shawe responded as he took a seat as directed. “Started as an Engineering Officer there. Yes, I know. I killed the Chief Engineer there. But the reports say it, he was acting against the captain and the Empire,” he said with a shrug, almost dismissively, as if he knew it was going to come up and wanted to get it out of the way straight away.

Gunnar’s eyes narrowed but his facial expression stayed the same “It says so on the death records of nearly all assassinated officers” Dry humor in his voice “I don’t mourn that mans death, according to more than a few people you were what held the Hellcat together, I value your skills more than anything else” He studied the man before him carefully “Tell me your thoughts on serving with non-Terrans” Again he didn’t ask a question.

CO

“Depends, a lot of xenos work against the Empire, those ones - well, I can’t make any promises something won’t happen, captain,” replied Shawe. It was hard to tell if he was being serious or said it in jest. “But as long as they remember your the captain, and the Empress is OK with it, then I am OK with them,” Shawe says. “But don’t expect me to give them any special treatment. If they break something, they will regret it,” he says, again hard to tell if the statement was serious or not.

“I have always been of the opinion that Starfeet Officers are just that, Starfleet Officers be they Terran or lesser” Gunnar said calmly “I expect all my department heads to work under similar ideals, they are all Imperial Citizens and shall be treated as such, the rebellion is as good as dead but I won’t see it resurrected just to stoke someone’s ego, there’s plenty more places to conquer without the bother of our own citizens turning themselves into corpses.” He scratched his chin “I understand that you are very familiar with the insides of the Agonizer booth, do you have any ideas on improvements on our current models. There have been few improvements since the Original Reed designs over the past two decades.”

CO

Shawe smiled, the radiation burn twisting around the grin. “Indeed I have. And I agree they haven’t changed all that much. Accidents are known to happen every now and again, however,” he said, shrugging innocently. “I will admit, the current experience is unpleasent. Based on what you said, it would also depend on whether you wish to use them for interrogation,” Thomas paused, gesturing to one side, and then the other, like a set of justice scales, “or punishment, the methods are similar, but the motivation changes the type of agony one deserves,” he said.

Lieutenant (J.G) Thomas Shawe, CE

There was a slight pause before Gunnar answered “I find torture rarely brings answers you can trust, the agonizers make for better punishments” He leaned forward in his chair “How about a challenge, do you think that you can miniaturize the technology, make the chamber portable. Something that can bring pain without death in the same manner?” for the first time he asked a question.

CO

Shawe smiled as he asked about the question. “I like the sound of that. An agonizer gun might be more pratical than an actual booth, but I think that I could make it work. Maybe something that ropes the target and sends the pain that way… I’ll have to look into it but I think it could be done,” he said with a certain excitement.
