IC: Chandel waited a moment,”That kind of work is very wearing both emotionally and physically. Is that why you have chosen to accept a stationary assignment now? ” She wondered if Trent would adjust well to a more stationary assignment well after being in the field so long.

IC:

“Well, I tend to accept whatever Starfleet throws my way,” Kate commented with a grin. “But I’m not opposed to slowing down a little bit. I’ve been on the run, so to speak, since I graduated from the Academy.” If Kate had any concerns about adjusting to life on the Magellan, she wasn’t showing them.

Lt Trent, SOO

Chandel tilted her head curiously as she asked,”That change of pace won’t bother you?”

Kate offered a small shrug as her initial response to the question as she took a lengthy sip of her beverage. “I don’t really know, to be honest,” she commented, her voice quieting slightly. “I guess we’ll both just have to see. Maybe I’ll actually have time to contemplate a hobby.” She said the last part with a laugh that indicated it was a genuine joke. Her head tilted to the side slightly as she studied Chandel. “Do you have any advice?”

“A hobby…well what catches your interest? What do you like to do? Read, paint, study stars?” Chandel asked leaning forward as she waited for the answer, her thoughts going back to her conversation with the CMO on the observation deck while he painted the nebula out the viewport. That very painting hung on the wall beside her desk as he had gifted it to her.

The question genuinely stumped Kate. “Honestly, while I’d like to think I’m a well-rounded individual, my focus over the last decade has been almost exclusively on work. What little free time I had was spent reading dossiers or working out.” She paused for a moment to contemplate the choices that Chandel had presented. “I guess I have my work cut out for me finding something to do with my spare time.”

Chandel grinned.”Well, the best way to find out is to do a search on the database, see what catches your eye. Or if you like more physical pursuits why not book a holosuite and try sports or something like horseback riding. Something you have never done before. One of my favorite programs is a ride on the beach at sunset. It is very relaxing. Maybe you would like climbing, hang gliding or something more extreme like that.” She suggested.”I think you will surprise yourself and learn a bit more of yourself. Learning a new skill that you enjoy is very confidence building.”

“I like all of these ideas, Counselor, thank you,” Kate responded, her tone genuine and warm. “Although confidence isn’t really something I’ve struggled with in my life…” She said the last phrase with a laugh, hoping that it didn’t come across to narcissistic. Her career choices thus far had afforded her a healthy appreciation for the capabilities and limitations of both her body and her mind. “Is there anything else that you would like to discuss?” she asked, not intending to rush Chandel but curious if there were any other relevant topics that they needed to hit before the evaluation was complete.

Chandel grinned, quite enjoying the banter with the SOO.”Exam wise? No, not at all. I have quite enjoyed our conversation, Lieutenant. Maybe we’ll have to make some of those excursions together if they are not too extreme.” She offered as she rose to walk the SOO to the door.
