“Ah? What prompted such a sudden transfer?” Chandel asked curiously.

Counselor Chandel

Kate gave a laugh and a playful shrug as she responded, “the whims of Starfleet?” Picking up her coffee and enjoying another sip, she continued, “the Endeavour was a bit out of character for me, so I assume the powers that be thought I could better serve the Magellan in this capacity. I can’t say I disagree.” Her eyes twinkled as she finished her statement, showing that she wasn’t particularly unsettled by the change of pace.

Lt Trent, SOO

“You seem to be someone who handles sudden change very well, Lieutenant. Where are you from?” She asked curiously wondering about the SOO’s upbringing.

Counselor Chandel

Kate smiled softly at the complimentary observation. She thought for a few moments on how to answer that question and then finally replied, “I don’t really have somewhere that I call home. I was born on a Starfleet vessel and spent much of my upbringing on them or various stations or bases.” She paused a moment and then added, as if in explanation, “both of my parents were in Starfleet.”

Lt Trent, SOO

“Ah, so you are quite accustomed to it. Did your parents influence your career choice? By the way, I am new to a Starbase, what does a SOO do?” Chandel couldn’t help asking curiously.

Counselor Chandel

“I am,” Kate responded with a smile that revealed that she wasn’t at all upset by her upbringing. “I’m new to this role as well. My understanding is that it’ll involve some intelligence work, some coordination of fleet activity… I’m still getting to know Captain Gillespie and what he’s looking for from the position. My background is in intelligence.”

Lt Trent, SOO

“Ah,” Chandel said with a mischievous grin, “That sounds exciting. So this position will have new aspects for you which I’m sure won’t be too much of a challenge for you. Have you had much interactions with the Klingons or Romulans before?” She asked as she sipped her coffee.

Counselor Chandel

Kate felt herself grinning along with Chandel, truly excited about the new opportunity on the starbase. The follow on question, however, had a flash of… something… make its way across her face. Studying the coffee table carefully for a few moments, she took a very slow sip of her coffee before returning it to its previous position. Holding the liquid in her mouth gave her the much needed opportunity to steady herself before she answered what could be a loaded question, especially for a time as perfunctory as a boarding evaluation. “I’ve had some interactions with both races over the course of my career,” she finally answered, a finality at the end of her sentence indicating that she didn’t desire to go into many more details than that.

Chandel’s eyebrow rose, she was a decently trained therapist so had caught the hesitation and evasiveness of the answer.”Enough of an interaction to be a problem, Lieutenant?” She asked with all seriousness now, no banter in her tone but a smooth sound of empathy resonated within it.

Counselor Chandel

Despite the seriousness of Chandel’s question, Kate smiled slightly. “There are always problems in the intelligence community,” she offered, softly. She should have known better than to leave such an opening for the counselor to pick up on. Much of her career she couldn’t talk about, although there were vague snippets in her personnel file that surely Chandel had seen.

“Such as?” Chandel asked gently prodding. She was aware that were probably things Trent could not discuss but there were ways to discuss top secret things in generalities without specifics and Chandel was pretty adept at leading such conversations. After all even spies needed counselling sometimes.
