Remy slammed back his bourbon then sighed. “I can sum up Lt. Petrov in one word–narcissist.”

He paused to refill his glass. “Arrogant, egotistical, pain in the ass, but ‘e is also de best damn engineer I ‘ave ever worked wit’. When it comes to engines de man is a genius. His ac-SHONs ‘ave saved de Wolverine on a few occasions.”

He set bottle in front of Jason indicating he was welcome to more if he wanted.

“I believe it is only de man’s pride and attitude dat ‘as kept him from achieving de rank of commander by now. I also tink ‘e is a bit paranoid, but dere is no confirma-SHON of dat. Sometimes ‘e tinks everyone is out to screw ‘im over, when in reality, it is ‘is ownego dat ‘as kept him at de rank of Lt.”

“It would no’ surprise me dat you ‘ear ‘is name spoken in de same breathe as La Forge and Scott.”

Reilly took the bottle and filled his glass. “I actually heard it more in the context of Romulans. And Barclay. Not a good combination.” and he took a sip. “But I also saw a few glowing recommendations. His talent as an Engineer is not in any question. My concern is his, as you said, ego.” and he paused as if in thought.

“And Lieutenant Claire?” he asked, his gaze more at the desk than at the man behind it. “Security on a ship like this is of paramount importance. How would you rate her?”

Remy released a small grin at the mention of Alita’s name. “Ah, Lt. Claire. . . .is a work in progress. She was assigned as a mis-SHON specialist. Cross-trained in many disciplines of shipboard opera-SHONS. I promoted her to security chief after de loss of ‘er predecessor, on an interim basis. After reviewibe ‘er performance on dat mis-SHON, and followine up wit’ her previous ‘istory, I decide to make dat permanent.”

“She does ‘ave some bouts of self-confidence, bu’ I ‘ave no reason to believe she will no’ become an excellent COS.”

Remy paused, debating whether or not to inform the XO of his relationship with Alita. In the end, he thought it best to do so.

“Lt. Claire and I are related. We did no’ discover dis rela-SHON-ship until after she was promoted to COS. De Lt. is my great-great-great-great-grandaughter. . . . . “

He let that information sink in a few moments before continuing. “It’s true. It was a revela-SHON we bot were quite surprised to discover. You’ security clearance as an Intel op will give you access to one of de incidents on Black Rock in which de USS Merrimack traveled ahead to dis time. I ‘ad a romantic encounter wit’ on of her officers, which resulted in a pregnancy I knew notine ‘bout until Alita discovered de connect-shon. It’s a long story dat you can check out at you’ leisure. Dere are only a few of de crew dat aware of dis, an’ Alita an’ I would like to keep it day way fo’ de time beine. Cmdr Erin is de oly oder person aware of dis.”

Reilly grinned at the Captain and said “Temporal STD’s could be a real pain in the… well… you know. Wrap that thing up, Skipper. You don’t want to be surprised with a few hundred years of child support, do you?”

A slight chuckle emerged from Remy’s lips. “I guess birth control was a lil’ bit different a ‘undred years ago. It is unfortunate dat I never ‘ad de chance to meet my child, but dere are future. . . past. . . .genera-SHONS dat are still around. I jus’ ‘ave to be careful ‘bout introducing myself.”

Rising to his feet and stretching, Remy moved to the window and gazed out into the stars. “Who is next on de list?”
