I noticed a small slipped thread and decided to fix it while I had some time.” : : : : : : : : : : : : “Do you have any activities you enjoy when you’re not on duty?” Sharise asked. : : : : : : : : : : : : Lt. Sharise, CNS : : : : : : : : : : Avery shook her head, “Not at all. Patch away.” : : : : : : : : : : She sat back and considered the counselor’s question, “I’m kind of an outdoorsy girl. I like to hike, swim, lay out under the stars next to a nice warm fire. I used to do a lot of exploring, growing up on the farm. When I’m on a ship I like to get into a good scary holo-novel. Honestly, there’s nothing like a good scare. One of my favorite authors is fixin’ to release his next program sometime this month. I’m really excited.” : : : : : : : : : “Oh, that sounds interesting!” Sharise exclaimed as she pulled the needle through and sent it back down into the threads. “I have to admit that I never really got into holonovels. More a time thing thing than anything.” : : : : : : : : : The doctor watched as Ayla worked on her tapestry, “Sadly, I never really found any craft that I could get into. I imagine it can be almost like meditation.” : : : : : : : : : : Lieutenant (j.g.) Samuels (CMO) : : : : : : : : Ayla smiled deeply. “It very much is. It takes a great deal of patience and focus and it helps me sort out my mind as much as regular meditation does.” She secured the thread with a deft series of knots at the back of the tapestry and then used tiny and delicate scissors to trim the end off. Gathering her supplies and the tapestry, Ayla got up and set it all on her desk. From there, she sorted through stuff while she chatted. “I can imagine holonovels to be a more portable recreation than mine. You should see my regular floor loom. I had to leave it back home because it would have taken up too much space here,” she said with a laugh. : : : : : : Avery chuckled slightly at the thought of a giant loom stuffed into the corner of the counselor’s quarters. “Yes, much easier to carry a computer program around, I reckon.” : : : : : : : : “I’m sure you’re used to making due with whatever situation you’re in though. Was your last posting very different from the Wolverine?” Sharise asked as she finished her tidying. : : : : : : : : Lt. Sharise, CNS : : : : : : “Much different, actually,” she responded. “My previous posting was as CMO on one of the academy ships. It was really only for a few weeks before the position opened up here on the Wolverine, but it was quite interesting going from cadet to being in charge of several of my classmates. There’s also something interesting about seeing the new class come on board for their first cruise. I remember how excited and terrified I was all at the same time. As a doctor, I was one of the first people they met on the ship so I always did my best to be reassuring and comforting. Trying to keep the physicals short and sweet so they didn’t have a traumatic experience on their first day.” : : : : : : Lieutenant (j.g.) Samuels (CMO) : : : : Ayla nodded as she put away the last items and moved over to join Avery. She sat in the other chair, crossed her legs and adopted a relaxed posture. “I can imagine it being rather overwhelming and also character building,” she replied thoughtfully. “Did you have any situaitons come up where you feel you could have done better?” : : : : Lt. Sharise, CNS : : Avery shook her head as she pondered the counselor’s question, “No specific situations come to mind really. The Academy does a great job training us all to be officers and making sure that we are exposed to a lot of different scenarios so I was well prepared for caring for people as well as leading my staff members. I also came into it with some skills that I learned from dairy cows. They can’t really tell you how they’re feeling so you learn to look for subtle clues. People are the same way, as I’m sure you know, you just have to know the signs they give off and learn to ask the right questions to get the verbal response. As for leading stubborn cadets well that’s nothing compared to trying to lead a 400 kilo dairy cow onto a trailer that she’s not inclined to board.” : : Lieutenant (j.g.) Samuels (CMO) She laughed lightly. “I can imagine,” Ayla said with a nod. “This ship, as I’m sure you’ve quickly realized, is very different than an Academy ship.
