Inside Remy’s quarters, the chime sounded. It was late, 2336, and she didn’t know if he was sleeping or not, but this couldn’t wait. Ayla felt dazed and undoubtedly when the door opened, her expression would be the same. She had replayed the message over and over in her mind as she walked through the corridor. It had been a punch to the gut and it took all of her training to calm herself so that she could go do the one thing she was loathe too.
This was not going to go over well, unavoidable circumstances or not.

Remy had been sitting on the couch in his quarters. Wearing a t-shirt and shorts, he was going over reports that were overdue for his signature, hence the reason he was still awake at this hour.
Hearing the chime, he moved to the door, hoping it was Ayla coming for a midnight rendevouz. The door slid open and a grin broke out when he saw her standing there. He reached out and took Ayla’s hand, pulling her into his quarters.
“I am ‘appy to see you ‘ave changed you’ mind an’ decided to come for a sleepover.”
She stiffened slightly, and chided herself for forgetting their earlier conversation.
As he leaned in to kiss her, he stopped short as he sensed his lover’s apprehension and concern. “Cher? Is ever’tine alright?”

Ayla shook her head and stepped back, moving around Remy. Right now space was good because she knew fully he was going to hate what she was about to say. “I… I just got a message from home, from my mother.” She could feel the moisture settling into her lower lids and swallowed. “My father is ver, very ill. Doctors aren’t sure if he’ll recover or not.” She stopped there, as it was hard enough. Did he understand the implications?

“Ayla, I’m so sorry to ‘ear dis. Of course, I will approve a leave for you for ‘owever long you need to see ‘im get better. You can leave right awa. I’ll submit my own leave to command an’ be there fo’ you as soon, as I can. Bryson can ‘andle tines for a while. . . “
Words caught in her throat and the objection that should have been spoken died there.
He reached up and brushed away the ters building in her eyes. “E ‘as to be a strong man to ‘ave raised you.” Offering her a soft smile, Remy continued. “I will get in touch wit’ de finest doctors in de Federa-SHON, an’ if dat don’ work, I will bring in Tantie Mattie to work ‘er Bayou voodoo.”
Remy spread his arms wide and offered to hold her and support her in any way she needed.

“Oh Remy,” she said softly, sobbing slightly as she fell into his warm and comforting arms. Turning her head to the side, she braced herself for what was to come. “I love you Remy, I do. I took a big chance coming to the Wolverine to see if my future lay alongside yours. But… the thing is… I don’t know if this is just going to be leave. I don’t know if I’m coming back,” she said. Her voice was barely above a whisper, dreading his reaction.

Remy felt as if he had just taken a sledgehammer to the side of his head. The words echoed in his mind over and over again, “. . .don’t know if I’m coming back. . . “
Ayla would feel him tense up. Remy still held her tight, but pulled back, searching her eyes for some explanation. “What? . . . Why?. . . I don’ understan’? Why would you no’ come back? Dis is you’ place, beside me. . . Maybe you jus’ need some down time.”
“I spent three year in a coma, Remy, and I’ve spent most of life away from home. My parents are dear to me and that is where my son is. I need this time with them.”
The pit in his stomach was growing larger by the second as fought back the tears that would sure to come. “I’ll put in an order for a temporary counselor until you come back.”
She just sighed.
He was running out of ideas and options. “Cher, please. . . we’ll come up wit another idea. We’ll make somethine work.”
“Remy…”
“Ayla, I lost you once and a miracle brought you back to me. . . I don’ wanna leave it up to chance to bring you back again.”
He stood up straight as he came to a final solution. “I will give up my comis_SHON and retire from Starfleet. My pension can take care of us and you’ father until. . . when dat runs out, we can become pirates, like we dreamed, no?”
Boudreaux (CO)
“I’ve no want for money.” She moved closer and placed a hand on his cheek, gazing deeply into his eyes. “I’ll compromise. Give me six months to see what is what. I promise not to make any permanent decisions until then, okay?”
“The other side of this is the mental block that K’Mar put into my mind to help with my PTSD. It’s working, but there’s some more healing to be done and I can do that there without the rest of the symptoms taking over.”

At this point, Remy was willing to take what he could get. He knew Ayla had a stubborn streak and once her mind was made up. . . “Six months, ” he sighed.
He forced a smile even though there was no joy behind it. “I was wit’out you for tree years, six months should be a cake walk, no?”
“I canno’ preten’ to like dis decision, bu’ I understand why you ‘ave to go. Family is de mos’ importan’ tine dere is.”
He pulled her close once again and held tight. Using all of his senses to remember everything about the love of his life; the touch of her skin, the smell of her hair, the taste of her lips, everything. . . . .”You are my balance, cher. You make me wan’ to be a better man. De sins of my past disappear when I’m wit’ you. . . .I love you Ayla Sharise, wit’ everytine dat I am. . . :
