Starfleet Intelligence has identified no specific epidemic or extraordinary pathogen threat associated with Karthos Drift. The dominant medical concern is cumulative: chronic exposure, inconsistent treatment, inadequate preventative care, and illnesses that would ordinarily be manageable under Federation medical standards becoming persistent health problems.

Common conditions include:
- Untreated respiratory illness associated with industrial dust exposure (from Bronchitis and Asthma on the mild end to conditions more similar to ‘black lung’ on the extreme)
- Heavy-metal poisoning associated with unregulated mining operations
- Long-term radiation exposure
- Infections associated with contaminated water
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Untreated or poorly treated childhood illnesses
- Antimicrobial-resistant infections associated with inconsistent or non-existent medical care

Noah read through the list, nodding to himself. Nothing here seemed out of the ordinary for what they were getting themselves into and nothing that his staff shouldn’t be able to manage very quickly, even with the somewhat limited resources of the smaller facilities on the Wolverine. Taking a sip of his coffee, he moved on to chronic diseases and common injuries.

As the next file populated Noah would notice that the chronic diseases aligned nearly identically to the common conditions assessment he just finished reading. As he moved on to the common injuries he would notice that traumatic injuries were significantly more prevalent than acute illness.

Common cases include:
- Decompression injuries
- Industrial burns
- Mining accidents
- Crush injuries
- Radiation burns
- Weapon trauma
- Poorly healed fractures
- Prosthetics maintained well past their intended service life

Note While none of the conditions themselves pose significant challenges, there is an abnormally high rate of comorbidity among residents of The Drift.

Noah considered the list, which made sense considering the type of operation these people were involved in. The comorbidity rate was an interesting piece of information, though he expected there were not a lot of skilled medical professionals available so the mixture of acute and chronic conditions would make for a prime environment for everything to be more serious. He briefly skimmed through the environmental hazards and radiation exposure to see if there was anything out of the ordinary there before moving on to two of the topics that he was most interested in here: Alien Biology and Unknown Pathogens.

The doctor’s skim of environmental and radiation exposure reveal that the hazards are what one would expect, an industrial assortment: metallic particulates, atmospheric contaminants, inconsistent oxygen quality, solvents, refinery byproducts, decompression and microgravity risks.

Radiation conditions are primarily chronic and cumulative in nature among residents.

Alien biology and unknown pathogens were equally as unassuming. The Wolverine’s medical staff would be well within their skill set to treat what they’re likely to encounter, but The Drift is a multi-species habitat so one treatment cannot be assumed for the wide range of residents. There are unknown microorganisms and pathogens within The Drift, but no reports of active outbreaks.

Noah thumbed through the results and made a few mental notes about which species’ medical information he should catch up on before encountering any patients. He moved on to read through the rest of the non psychological files, paying closer attention to available treatment options and medical networks.

Current Understanding:
Karthos Drift does not appear to possess a coordinated medical-care system comparable to those normally encountered within the Federation. Despite this, the permanent population continues to function in an environment characterized by chronic industrial exposure, traumatic injury, inconsistent treatment, and limited preventative care.

Available intelligence suggests that residents may compensate through informal and decentralized medical networks. Potential components include:
- Retired physicians
- Civilian medics
- Black-market pharmaceuticals
- Improvised clinics
- Mutual-aid systems

The extent, reliability, accessibility, and relationships between these resources have not been established.

Operational Considerations:
Starfleet Intelligence does not currently possess sufficient information to identify dependable medical providers or establish consistent standards of care throughout the Drift.

Determining how local residents obtain treatment, and which individuals or organizations provide it, may provide useful insight into the civilian community and the systems that allow Karthos Drift to function despite its instability.

10. Treatment Options

Current Understanding:
USS Wolverine’s medical capabilities are expected to exceed much of the care ordinarily available within Karthos Drift. The principal concern is therefore not whether Wolverine’s medical personnel can provide treatment, but where, how, and under what circumstances that treatment should be provided.

Medical personnel should be prepared to consider:
- Treatment aboard Wolverine versus treatment within the Drift
- Whether use of advanced Federation medicine could compromise the vessel’s identity or mission
- Whether medical supplies should be left with local caregivers
- Whether local caregivers should be trained in treatments or procedures
- Whether local medical practices should be respected or incorporated
- Whether a proposed course of treatment can be provided without compromising operational security

Operational Limitation:
The most technologically advanced treatment may not always represent the most appropriate operational choice. Medical personnel may encounter circumstances in which providing Federation-standard care creates consequences beyond the immediate medical outcome.

As he read through the reports on how the Wolverine might interact with the population in The Drift he considered that it was definitely going to be an ethical conundrum. There was going to be a fine line between interference and humanitarian aid. He supposed they would have to look at all of those things on a case by case basis once they got there. He silently hoped that the mission would avoid the most ethically unpalatable scenarios so he wouldn’t have make too many of those decisions.

He signed and then thumbed into the psych files to see what those held.

Noah glanced through the available files and decided it would be best to just start from the top. He took another sip off his coffee and noticed that he was going to need a refill soon. Taking the opportunity to also stretch he got up and went over to the replicator, deciding to go for something a little more invigorating to get through the psych files.

“Computer, recycle coffee mug and may I have a medium iced coffee with sweet cream and chocolate.”

After the chilled drink materialized in the replicator he grabbed it and took a sip. The computer had done an okay job and it would do the trick for now. He made his way back over to the desk and settled in for the next round of information.

“Alright, computer, play files starting with ‘psychological effects’ please.”

• Emotional detachment or guarded behavior
• Increased tolerance for conditions or behavior outsiders may consider abnormal or dangerous

These characteristics should not be assumed to apply universally. Individuals within the Drift may experience and respond to similar conditions differently.
