Kohana stepped off the turbolift at deck three and made his way toward the port side of the Wolverine. His destination was Airlock 1 and the docking port.Once he arrived, he punched in his personal security code into the keypad. The doors swooshed open and Kohana stepped through the airlock into his own small personal frieghter, the SS Midnight Delivery.
This was the ship he used while operating under his legend identity of Rory Lycos, smuggler extraordinaire. He sent messages from here while working undercover and unable to use normal Starfleet communication systems..
Sitting at the communications console, he began typing in requests for information on the details of the mornings briefings. Keywords, names, anything the would result in information required for their mission. The messages were sent to his various contacts throughout the galaxy. Those that often kept to back alleys, shady businesses, and the more mundane, possibly more degenerate dregs of federation society.
After completing the missives, he sent them out, piggybacking them on normal civilian traffic and bouncing them off multi-node relay stations, basically making his messages untraceable. Anyone intercepting the messages would have no idea they were sent from the Wolverine.
While waiting for responses, he tapped into Starfleet Intelligence files in a second effort to find information required for the mission . . . .

CIO-USS WolverineThe encrypted messages disappeared into civilian traffic, bouncing from relay to relay before vanishing into the noise. Most would take hours, perhaps days, before anyone answered, if they answered at all. One reply arrived much sooner than expected.
The sender identified herself only as Nia Voss, an Orion information broker who had traded favors with Rory Lycos more than once over the years. She never worked for free, but she had always been reliable.
Rory… haven’t heard your name in a while. Word around the Drift is something has everyone on edge. People are keeping conversations short, looking over their shoulders. Whatever happened, it wasn’t business as usual. I can start asking questions, but if I do, people are going to notice. This one will cost you.
The Starfleet Intelligence archives proved no less stubborn. Every request involving Kara Straum, Karter Dorwin, or Karthos Drift returned the same result: portions of the files had been compartmentalized beyond your current access. One pattern did emerge.
Over the past six months, several unrelated investigations into trafficking, narcotics, and disappearances all terminated the same way. The case files were quietly reassigned to another office before any conclusions were reached. The destination had been redacted, but someone inside Intelligence had been gathering everything connected to Karthos Drift into one place. Whoever that was, they wanted the whole picture. Whether they were trying to solve it… or bury it… remained impossible to tell.
Mr Centauri GM extraordinaire
Kohana leaned forward in the pilot’s chair, eyes narrowing as he reread Voss’s message.
He opened a secure reply channel under Rory Lycos’s credentials.
‘Start asking. Quietly. I need names, ships, routes—anything tied to Straum, Dorwin, or the Drift. Your payment will be worth your time. Maybe a weekend trip for two to Risa, my dear Nia.’
He hit send and his attention returned to the Intelligence files. Someone had been collecting every thread connected to Karthos Drift, and they had enough authority to keep it hidden.
Kohana began cross-referencing the reassigned case numbers with personnel transfers, ship manifests, and office access logs.
“Either someone’s building a case,” he said quietly, “or they’re making sure no one else can.”

Kohana’s message disappeared into the civilian relay network, indistinguishable from thousands of other commercial transmissions. A few minutes later, the terminal chirped with a reply.
“Rory… if this is about Straum, you’ve picked a bad time to ask. I’ll keep my ears open, but people are nervous. If I find something worth knowing, you’ll hear from me… and you can tell me more about this trip to Risa.” Nia noted
The Intelligence databases proved equally frustrating. Cross-referencing the reassigned investigations revealed only one consistent pattern, every trafficking case connected to Karthos Drift had quietly disappeared into the same redacted office. Whoever was collecting them had enough authority to hide their tracks, and enough interest to make sure every loose thread ended in the same place.
Before closing the files, one final notification caught Kohana’s attention. Starfleet Intelligence had finished decrypting and releasing the personnel dossiers for Kara Straum and Karter Dorwin. The files contained little operational intelligence beyond what had been presented in the briefing, but they offered something equally valuable, a look at the two operatives behind the mission. Sometimes understanding the people was just as important as understanding the operation.
OOC: if you want to look at the files, have him bring them up.
