Beep, beep beep, beep.As the alarm went off Fraiser Flynn leaned back from where he’d been peering at himself in the mirror, adjusting his hair so that it sat just right. He hadn’t really needed the alarm, but he wanted his timing to be perfect. He’d already shaved his face, so his skin was smooth and fresh. His uniform was on and fitted nicely around his frame, showing off his physic that he worked so hard to maintain. Not a stitch sat out of place. He knew he was attractive, if his face didn’t catch a lady’s eye then his body did and he took careful care to keep it that way.
He’d slipped onto the Wolverine early and a pretty enough Ensign had shown him around, he’d let her prattle on about things he didn’t care about offering his charming smile, the one that always won others over, at just the right moments to make her think he was listening. It was a smile that had very much worked on her. She had been doe-eyed as he’d told her some of his greatest endeavours. When they’d reached the door of his quarters, she’d looked disappointed that he hadn’t invited her in. He told her that he’d enjoyed her company, but he was tired and wanted to rest before he officially checked in, and maybe they could have a glass of wine later when he was feeling up to it. He’d see how he felt later.
Now that the Ensign had given him a feel of the ship and the people that lived and worked on board were like. He could then set his quarters up how he wanted them, and make sure his presentation was flawless. He’d pass his medical exam with no issues, he was strong, fit and healthy. He doubted he’d have any issues with the Chief of Security either. He was good at what he did, top marks at the Academy and a perfect record ever since. It was always the Counselors that annoyed him the most. They had a way of needling him, trying to get into his brain like they wanted him to fail, poking and prodding at things that didn’t need to be touched.
Who cared about something that happened 6 years ago? Who cared his father was dead or his eldest brother was in prison? He didn’t and he didn’t see why Counselors should either.
With one last check Lieutenant junior grade Flynn stepped out of the bathroom and spying an off-duty NE Flynn approached her. “Can I just say you have lovely eyes,” Flynn said flashing one of his charming smiles, “Sorry I couldn’t help myself. I probably should have introduced myself first, I’m Fraiser. I’ve just arrived, so I haven’t really made any friends yet.”
The NE flush at the compliment, “NE Emma,” she said returning his smile, “Welcome aboard. How are you settling in?”
“I’m just about to look for the Counselor now actually.” He paused, put his arm to the back of his neck and looked sheepish, “I’m not quite sure where to go.”
Emma smiled, “I was just heading past there, why don’t you just come with me and I can show you.”
Flynn flashed her another charming smile, he always loved it when they offered and he didn’t even need to ask, “You’ve really saved me there if you could. Maybe once I’m all settled on board, I could thank you with a drink,”
“That would be nice,” Emma flushed and smiled before stepping ahead to lead the way. Flynn grinned as he moved to follow her, letting her point out various people along the way for him to greet with his charming smile, taking special note of the ones in his department that he would soon be working with. Hopefully with the company of the NE, it would make a good impression if the Counselor saw he was already making friends on the Wolverine.
After all, first impressions were everything.
Lt. (j.g) Flynn, Security
The counseling office was nothing more than the CMOs office. One of the doctors pointed Flynn in the correct direction. Inside, the office was fairly normal. A single desk, the short end pushed against the wall, dividing the room in half. A single desk chair sat behind it with two before it. A single monitor and a steaming cup of drink sat on the desk. Monitors, PaDDs, and various medical equipment filled the shelves of the room.
The office felt tiny. “Jr. Lt. Flynn. Welcome.” The voice was deep and gravely. The man was easily 7 foot, and if he wasn’t, he was close enough for it to not matter. He chest and shoulders were wider than a barrel of blood wine. His brow ridges were prominent and handsomely sculpted. His long mocha hair was braided intricately and he wore a metal baldric across his blue uniform with the crest of his house pinned over his shoulder. “Sit,” the Klingon said, “I am Lt Cmdr J’molla Khommrarc. I will be completing your psychological evaluation.”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
“Qapla’ Lt Cmdr,” Flynn greeted, thinking how fortunate it was that one of his previous Security Chiefs had been a Klingon and he’d learnt a few phrases from her during his time under her. He’d chosen that particular greeting as it was the one he was more accustomed to and although he wasn’t as sure as he liked it to be ‘nuqneH’ seemed out of place in this setting.
Something he wondered if that was something the Counselor quite often given his size and being Klingon. Not to mention the size of the room feeling like the walls were closing in he could imagine would unsettle some.
“Is this a two for one deal?” Flynn asked as he took a seat, seemingly completely at ease. “That’s efficient if that is the case.”
Lt. (j.g.) Flynn, Sec
J’molla nodded his head at the greeting and stared at him, “No. The previous chief medical officer was also the chief counselor. On a ship this small, that is usually the way. But necessity means I am here for now to cover the counseling needs.” He glanced once more at the screen and then turned it off. “Well let’s begin with why are you here on the Wolverine? What prompted this transfer?”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
“Well at least I don’t have far to go.” Flynn joked
Necessity, the word stuck some curiosity in Flynn as he tried to remember if he had come across what that necessity was in his research of the Wolverine.
“I was needed on Earth” he said simply, not feeling the need to elaborate further than that. When his younger brother Bryan had said their mother been injured and he’d initially just taken leave but once had arrived and seeing her condition he had decided to step up and resign his position not knowing when he’d be able to return. Someone had to step up as man of the family. He had decided that because he was the most accomplished then that role had to be his. “Once I was no longer needed there I returned to space. I belong there and the Wolverine is a strong name. My record is exemplary so I applied. I knew I’d get the position,”
“What made you decided to be a Counselor?”Flynn asked, moving the conversation away from himself, “If I may ask that is. The majority of the Klingons I have met and now yourself have been in security, tactical or leadership roles.”
Lt. J.g. Fraiser Flynn, Sec
“I am in a leadership role, and I excel at tactics,” Khommrarc said, not taking the bait. It was always the same, such drollery from other species. “So you choose your potential placement on a name? An interesting process. What would you have done if you had not been accepted? What was your second choice?”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
Flynn had been meaning a Captain or Executive Officer role, he certainly didn’t think councillors could be considered, at least in his eyes, a leadership role. All they did was ask pointless questions or listen to people cry over milk. He chose not correct it since he hadn’t specified. Unusual on his part. He chalked it down to the long travel out to the Wolverine dulling his normal charm a little.
“Names carry meaning. Meaning carries weight. Why do you think humans at least name their children after kings, military leaders or Captains? Even if it’s only a perception it’s like they want to bestow the gift of whatever that name means. Wolverine is a strong name and the Wolverine lives up to it’s name. It’s manned by strong officers with good reputations. Anybody would want to have a job on a ship like that.”
“If I were to put in an application for another ship it would be the Sentinel. Another strong name for another strong ship. Of course,” he smiled cocky and confident, “There was no if. I was always going to get this position. And I was right, because as you can see,” he gestured to himself, “I’m here.
“What made you choose the Wolverine Lieutenant Commander?” He flashed one of his charming smiles, “Can I assume it was for more than just the name?”
Lt. J.g Fraiser Flynn, Sec
“I did not choose the Wolverine Lt. I was specifically requested to come aboard.” Then he nodded very slowly. “The Sentinel was indeed a great ship. Her last captain was a great warrior. She was very picky about her security and tactical officers. Alas she was decommissioned in 2259. There has not been another ship of that name since.”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
“A good Captain knows how to select a good crew,” Flynn winked, “How do you like working under Captain Quade? He has a very distinguished record and is quite accomplished. If you were requested does that mean you are quite close?”
Lt. j.g. Fraiser Flynn, Sec
“Colonel,” J’molla corrected, “Quade. I have worked with Marines before, and though Colonel Quade is the skipper of the ship, I would strongly recommend that a junior Lt not demote the Colonel to the lowly rank of Captain. As for myself, he has only just come aboard. I’ve never met him, and I haven’t had a chance to work under him. I restrain judgement until I have served with someone.” His intense black stare bored into him. “Let’s discuss your temper.”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
Flynn wasn’t making any headway and it was beginning to irk him. He hadn’t been trying to demote the Colonel Captain Quade, but more of a reference to his role upon the Ark Angel, just as people might refer to Khommrarc as Counselor Khommrarc. However, he had gleaned some information now, one being that he was either a head of the Colonel Captain for checking in or he had decided to get his medical and counseling checkup elsewhere. While Flynn was disappointed that he wasn’t going to glean some information about the Colonel Captain from the Counselor it also meant the Counselor had been specially requested by someone else, most likely a previous Captain. Not knowing why, he found that information important Flynn tucked it away to mull over later.
Then the Counselor asked about his temper and Flynn had to wonder if the Counselor was deliberately trying to antagonise him. No, he though sarcastically to himself, the Lieutenant Commander Counselor, better not demote him either.
“I’m afraid there isn’t much to discuss,” Flynn locked eyes with Khommrarc, he was still smiling his well-practiced smile but his eyes were steely. “I admit I have been hot headed in the past and let it get the better of me once or twice but never on the job. If you look through my references, they will attribute that there is nothing wrong with my temperament, I had many friends aboard the U.S.S Saracen and I have already begun to make friends here,”
Lt. j.g. Fraiser Flyn, Sec
He smiled, but it was a bit feral. “Yes I read that. But I am curious. Your temper really did you a disservice when you were a child. Anger can be a useful emotion. We train our children from a very young age to harness it. Sharpen it, and use it like a perfect blade. According to your file you had no such training. I am curious how you have managed to silence that rage.”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
An unreadable expression crossed Flynn’s face. “When you want something badly enough you do what you have to. I wanted to get into Starfleet and that wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t change. So, I did. I changed and I learnt how to hide it. My only flaw is that I don’t have the same level as skill yet to harness and sharpen it the way a Klingon might. Perhaps you could show me,” Despite his last sentence being phrased like a suggestion it nearly sounded more of an expectation that Khommrarc would. “I’m a quick learner,”
Lt. j.g. Fraiser Flynn, Sec
“The first lesson is that hiding it is not mastering it. So what exactly do you do to hide it, and what happens when you can’t hide your anger anymore?”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
Flynn smirked, “I use my imagination.” He leaned back and crossed his arms “I’m not a child anymore, it doesn’t control me” it wasn’t entirely truthful, there were still times that it did get the better of him. Not many. Never while he was working, so in his opinion it wasn’t relevant information “When I get the chance, I blow it off in the gym or in the holodeck. I have a few programs there that my previous Chief of Security, Lieutenant Rah-Triton put together with me.”
He leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees, “She’s a Klingon too, maybe when you’re free you can come check it out some time.”
Lt. j.g Fraiser Flynn, Sec
“You say you are not a child, but you avoid discussing a legitimate question to your ability to handle the stress of your position like a child avoids telling on themselves,” J’molla said bluntly.
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
“I wasn’t avoiding,” He leaned back again, “Blowing it off on the holodeck is a legitimate answer, I take my anger put it in a box or whatever and blow it off later. Deep breath in deep breath out so on and so forth. Counsellor Sinclair when I was on the Saracen taught me a few techniques. I wasn’t allowed out of the armory until he was satisfied.” He sounded dismissive but he did respect the Counsellor who he was very aware of how much Sinclair had supported him.
“If,” He stressed the word, “I let my temper get the better of me, it’s in a personal environment, not a professional one,”
Lt. j.g. Fraiser Flynn, Sec
“I did not say that blowing off in the holodeck is not a legitimate answer. But it does not answer the question I put to you. How do you hide your anger, and what do you do when you can not hide it. Those are legitimate questions and that you did not answer.” J’molla nodded, “I know Royal Sinclair. A good man, an excellent tactical officer, and counselor. Though he tends to be soft on security types. Coddles them too much. XO of the Ogawa now, last I heard.”
It was brief but there was a slight twitch in Flynn’s face, for the smallest moment his smile didn’t look quite as smooth when J’molla commented about Sinclair being soft. Then it was smoothly back in place. Flynn’s eyes scanned the Counselors face trying to read what the Klingon.
“And what does that look like? When your temper gets the better of you in the personal environment?”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
Flynn looked thoughtful for a moment. Deliberately avoiding certain occasions he’d rather not think about. Instead, he let his mind wander back to an incident while he was on his leave. He’d been chatting up a woman when he’d seen the two men crowding his younger brother Bryan. Naive, stupid, weak Bryan. They’d said something, Bryan had pushed them off, one of them had grabbed Bryan’s arm and Flynn jumped the bar, not caring about the drinks and glasses he broke on his way to send a very clear message to get out and not return. A message he was sure they’d felt for a while after.
“I break things,” he said eventually, “Perhaps a glass or a bottle.” he looked down and flexed his hand remembering punching the wall in Counselor Sinclair’s office. Something he was forever grateful that hadn’t been added into his counselling notes. He’d been given a second chance, and it was something he knew underneath all his posturing that he would never be able to repay. “Once or twice, I’ve punched a wall or something nearby,”
Lt. j.g. Fraiser Flynn, Security
“Is that your preferred method? To damage things with your bare hands? A weapon? A structured fight? A wild brawl?”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
“A structured fight,” Flynn replied quickly, perhaps a little too quickly. “It’s controlled and the opponent has to have consented for there to even be a fight.” It seemed like the safest answer he could give. He also figured that it wasn’t technically a lie. Most times these days it was how he blew off steam as soon as he had chance to. His preferred choice.
He enjoyed the challenge weapons gave him. The concentration and focus it took to weld or use one efficiently. Phasers especially were good for that. However, weapons weren’t his natural affinity. His natural choice was always his hands. For one reason, he was even better in hand-to-hand combat than he was with weapons which he had scored highly in at the Academy. His second was that when he fought with his hands; he could feel when he needed to stop. To him weapons were dangerous in comparison, you couldn’t feel the damage, so it was easy to go to far. He’d seen it too many times before.
His third reason was more primal. It was something he’d never be able to explain more than it was instinct. When he got angry, he had this need to hit something, the satisfaction of his fist hitting its target. Most times these days, on the rare occasion these days that he couldn’t control that instinct, he could channel it into striking some unlucky inanimate object in his vicinity. Not as satisfying but… his thoughts trailed off and a pair of hands held defensively between him and the face underneath …safer.
He smirked, trying to shake off the uncomfortable feeling “A structured fight also means I’m fighting someone who knows how to take a hit,”
Lt. j.g. Fraiser Flynn, Security
J’molla chuckled deeply at that. “Or at the very least they think they can take a hit.” He leaned forward slightly catching a flash of far away look. “What were you remembering?”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
“Something from a long time ago.” Flynn gave his charming smile, “nothing exciting, just an old scrap. Does the Wolverine ever host any organized fighting competitions on board? MMA or boxing, anything like that?”
Lt. j.g. Fraiser Flynn, Security
J’molla noticed that particular smile whenever Flynn wanted to change the subject. Perhaps human’s found it engaging. “Tell me about this old scrap.” He was good at his job and knew that something about their conversation had made him remember that something from a long time ago.
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
“I’m not sure what there really is to tell,” Flynn leaned back stretching his legs out in front of him and folded his arms “I punched someone, they punched me, we fought.”
He smirked “I won,”
Lt. j.g. Fraiser Flynn, Security
J’molla leaned back and nodded, “What did you fight about? What started it?”
N Lt. Cmdr. J’molla Khommrarc, CNS
Fraiser’s eye twitched, but his smooth smile stayed on. “Sh-he. He,” Fraiser quickly corrected himself, “Threatened my younger brother,” It wasn’t a lie, he was referring to a fight he had had, it just wasn’t what he believed J’molla was asking about, “If it had been one of my older brothers I wouldn’t have cared, but Bryan, he’s soft. Mother coddled him too much when we were growing up,”
“He wanted Bryan to cough up money for protection,” Friaser scoffed, “Can you believe it? I showed him Bryan didn’t need it.”
