David walked down the corridor to sickbay, his customary PADD tucked under his arm and a pleasant, if somewhat more serious than he liked, expression on his face. It was still odd walking into this room in command red - it’d been months, but old habits die hard and he was still a medical officer at heart. The doors hissed open at his approach, and he strode into the room, making eye contact with and crossing to the shift duty officer. “Can I pull Ensign Dradvia for a few minutes? I don’t expect we’ll be long - just some paperwork I have to get done.”

The lieutenant nodded, “Of course, sir!” She motioned to Dradvia to follow David, who led her over to Tessan’s office. He knew that the CMO was out for the shift, so it would be a private place to talk. “Sit down,” he encouraged. “You aren’t in trouble in any way, shape or form.”

Dradvia nodded and made her way toward Cmdr Morris. She followed him into Tessan’s office. She was confused what paperwork he had that involved her. She had completed all of her check-ins. Was there a problem with her records from the Academy? She sat when he told her too, but his next words put her on edge and it was obvious. Nothing good ever happened when started with the words “you aren’t in trouble.”

David smiled warmly, doing his best to calm her back down and keep her calm. “Ensign Stevens from Engineering has claimed that Mr. Zoi - Sisnil - ‘never leaves you alone’ and ‘doesn’t allow you to socialize with anyone other than him’. Now, I’m inclined to believe Sisnil on this, but I do have to ask you directly - is Stevens claiming this falsely, or is he correct? And in either case, how can I and the command staff help with the situation?”

Dradvia’s eyes flicked up in surprise and apprehension, but like Morris had noticed at the party, she did not meet his eyes or look directly at him. If he had a tricorder pointed at her he would notice an immediate increase in her heart rate, cortisol, and adrenaline levels. “Mr. Zoi doesn’t bother me,” her voice was very firm and insistent. He was the only person on the ship who had truly been kind to her, and actually had tried to get to know her and not what they wanted her to be. Why wouldn’t Stevens leave her alone? What had she done to make him so focused on her? Or was it a by product of not liking Sisnil? The man gave her the creeps and scared her.

What could the command staff do? Transfer that horrible creepy Stevens far away, but she wouldn’t say that. She wouldn’t ask for anything either. First rule of survival, don’t draw attention. Whether by mistake or asking for things or achieving too much or being too attractive. Don’t draw attention no matter what. The second rule which was really a first rule as well, don’t owe anyone favors. “There is nothing, Sir. En Stevens is mistaken.”

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

“That’s what I expected to hear,” David said. “I could facilitate a transfer, if Stevens is bothering you. I happen to know that the Appleseed is looking to take on some additional junior engineers and one of my Academy friends is the XO over there. It would be no trouble at all, seeing as we’re at spacedock in a couple days.”

Dradvia shook her head. “No, Sir.” What kind of favor would she owe the CO if she said that was what she wanted. It might be easy enough for Morris to arrange, but the cost might be too high for her to pay. She knew Stevens had been saying nasty things about Sisnil and her to others. There was no way he wasn’t bragging about making an official report. His friends would retaliate against her if he was suddenly transferred. She had to keep quiet.

“Alright,” David agreed, catching the worry the offer created in her tone and body language. “But if Stevens starts bothering you or Mr. Zoi, please tell me. There are procedures in place for dealing with that sort of harassment.” He paused, setting the PADD down and his expression lightening. “While I have you, how have you been acclimating? This is your first posting, right?”

Commander David Morris
Commanding Officer

Dradvia almost told him how Stevens had been harassing her. If this had been before she met Sisnil, she would have. She had started learning to trust Star Fleet, that she would be treated fairly. The Federation, her superior, and fellow officers were moral and ethical. Then she met Sisnil, and she found out it was all a lie. They didn’t use the justice system and laws that they touted all over the quadrants. They didn’t put people on trial and be transparent. Instead they made a slave of Sisnil, forcing him to do things that would put people he cared about in grave danger for the Federations own goals. There was no news items about the arrest and trial of a known pirate, or the stopping of a security breach. It was all covered up, and they thought what they were doing was perfectly fine. The Syndicate knew what they did to her was perfectly legal too. “I understand, Sir,” she said instead.

The young doctor nodded, “Yes Sir. I came here right from Academy graduation. Lt. Tessan is a good teacher. The rest of the medical staff as well.”

“How’s living on a ship? It’s frequently a very different experience - when I was the counselor, about a third of the junior officers mentioned it.”

Commander David Morris

“I like it.” Well sort of. The changing of the engines and speed and direction always bothered her, but that was a totally different thing. She liked constantly being in the move. The confined space of a small ship meant there were very few surprise encounters, and no random visitors to keep watch for. The Academy had been terrifying. “It’s strange not sharing a room anymore, but I like that.”

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

David nodded. “We try to give single quarters to everyone we can unless they request otherwise - most people prefer the privacy. Are your circadian rhythms adjusting to there being no natural daylight cycle?”
