As Lovejoy was about to leave Engineering for the conference room a marine wandered by. He slunk off to a quiet place in Engineering. He placed a device on the ground and set it off. This shut down power in Engineering instantly. The Marine then legged it out of Engineering down the corridor. Lights flickered and the engines shut down. The ship was dead in the water and there was a saboteur on the loose. The XO’s comm came through shortly afterwards =/\= Engineering why are my engines powering up, then down, and now my lights are flickering? I’ve been onboard for 45 seconds and already I’m filled with confidence.=/\=

=/\= Engineering, the ship was hit with an emp wave. Get that thing in shape, ASAP =/\= Sisnil said. He looked for any other hints, anything to get the ship moving faster.

=/\=EMP, understood, if there is anything else you can find, let me know=/\= Rodrigo replied as he arrived on Deck 5 and waved down a couple of ensigns and called out to Lovejoy, “We need to get this core back operational, who here has performed a rapid cold start?” He asked as he pointed towards the intermix chamber and said, “We’ll start by overloading the matter / antimatter injectors while restricting flow out of the EPS manifold. The idea is to pump the dilithium intermix chamber to saturation while keeping the reaction contained within the core rather than allowing the plasma to fill the nacelles initially. Basically we’re taking a risk that results in a quickly restarted reaction or a big boom. Any questions?”

“No, sir,” the nearest ensign replied. “Lieutenant, where do you want us? I have some experience with M/A reaction theory, I’d be willing to supervise the intermix unless you want to do that.”

“I need you guys to start working on getting these lights worked on. Then I need one of you guys to work on the ships diagnostic on the engines. Tell me what is going on.” He ordered her two Junior Officers.

Rodrigo turned to the Lieutenant and said quickly, “Lovejoy? Pleasure to meet you. We had an EMP go off here in Engineering, did you see anyone enter or leave that shouldn’t have been here?” He said turning to Elfac, “With me, let’s get this core back online.” He said as he began to manually adjust the injectors, “Set the intermix valves to .44 initially, then down to .32 while I get the matter / antimatter dialed in, this is a new engine for me so it cold be a little bumpy”

“Commander. Pleasure is all mine. I did not see anyone enter or leave that shouldn’t have been here at all. But I will get this core back online within the next half hour to an hour commander. I wish I could tell you some better news commander.” She said. “Yes commander I’ll do so.” She stood there working on the intermix valves to .44 and then down to .32. “Commander I think it worked.” She said

A young engineer nearby overheard the Commander and Lt’s discussion and coughed.
“I saw someone running away shortly after power went down. I didn’t really think anything of it at the time. But it is now looking even more suspicious.” Ensign Travers said.

“Unfortunately we don’t have half an hour to an hour, we’re going to jump-start the reaction process.” Rodrigo mentioned as he heard the affirmative position of the intermix valves. “Alright” he started, his voice metallic and deep as he spoke with an unusual calm, “Once we start this, there’s we have precious little time, make sure that we’re ready to release the pre-igntion plasma from the intermix chamber and monitor for adequate gravametric displacement in the reaction. Places everyone.” He said as Ensign Travers recounted the stranger and Rodrigo swore under his breath, “Vaia por Deus!” Before he closed his one remaining eye before tapping on his badge and saying in the common tongue, =/\=Saravia to Zoi, I have reports of someone leaving Engineering quickly right before the EMP, do security logs show anyone out of place here at that time?=/\=

“Yes, commander, on it.” She said as she started to work on what needed to be done. She then stood there working on everything and noticed that something isn’t working well. However, she started to work on the problem. The ignition line was having a problem, but however, she started to get things worked on real quick.

=/\= “Apparently Security is guarded more closely than personnel logs. It’ll take a second…” There was the electronic clicking of a PaDD’s on screen keyboard and then Saravia could hear his grin. “Alright, let’s see....”=/\= He checked security logs for that time stamp and area. “Give me official access and I won’t have to make my own,” he muttered, unaware the comm was still linked.

The grin was indeed audible from across the ship, a side effect of Sisnil’s own opinion of himself no doubt, as the message came through followed by Rodrigo tapping his badge to reply, =/\=Zat can be arranged, but for now pleez let me know what you find. I will ignore zee rest of your comment for now.=/\= Rodrigo replied, his accent a little heavier as he was more focused on getting the core back online. Turning to Lovejoy he said, “Flux limiters need to be set to only allow a flow rate of .65 and we’re sure to trip zee resonance alarms of zee MARA, assuming I read zee specs correctly on my way here. Are we ready?”

Rodrigo tapped his badge to reply quickly, =/\= See if you can track him through zee ship. I want to know every movement and I want a name ASAP =/\= he replied as he initialized the matter / antimatter injectors. As the fuel streamed into the restricted valve apertures, the alarms did indeed begin to sound as Rodrigo looked closely at the EM radiation cascading off of the MARA, his cybernetics analyzing the output for any dangerous emissions.

Rodrigo would note that emissions were beginning to leak out of the valve apertures, apparently the saboteur had done more than just let off the emp. This was not going to be a quick 5 minute job.

McKenzie had then looked at Rodrigo. “Rodrigo. What’s the status of the valve apertures?” She looked over at him.

“Close the valves, NOW” Rodrigo ordered, as any leaks out of the deuterium / antideuterium tanks could end their adventures rather abruptly and suddenly. “We have bigger problems. Flush the EPS manifold and drain the intermix chamber, we need to isolate the valves for repairs before we try this again.” He looked at the apertures and with his augmented vision was able to see clear radiation leaks spilling out. “Lovejoy, once we’re in the clear, lets tackle those valves together so we can try again. Grab a toolkit and meet me there.”

“You got it.” She said as started to get it closed. She then later grabbed a toolkit and meets Rodrigo there.

The system shut down and the warning alarms halted as the process stopped and the EPS manifold was flushed and the intermix chamber was drained. The valves now just required fixing.

Joining Lovejoy at the valve bodies, he quickly looked them over, “Help me identify how these were damaged, no EMP blast should cause leakages like I saw.” Removing plating, Rodrigo scanned the valves to check for stress fractures, tampering, or anything that would damage the seal between the tanks and the intermix chamber.

“Well from what it looks here commander, something within the conduits blew and had some sort of EMP blast that happened. Which led to these leakages commander.” She said.

“I’m not seeing any further damage in the metal or the polymers, let’s re-seat the valves and perform a level 1 flow test before we try to start the core again” Rodrigo replied, working quickly, his mechanical fingers dancing over the mechanics of the system to repair the damage.

“You got it commander.” She said nodding to confirm everything. She then had started to help reseal the valves and started to perform a level 1 flow test.

As they worked on resealing the valves, Rodrigo said, “Tell me a little about yourself Lovejoy, what drove you to Engineering?” He asked as he worked, his tone metallic and almost harsh on some of the vowels. “After we’re settled, I might ask you to take a look at my vocal processor.” He said with a mild chuckle. “I’m done on this end, how does the test look?”

“Well sir. what drove me to engineering is because of my father. He was an engineer. I never had the pleasure to take up a position since after my last posting. However, I’ve always been more of an engineer.” She told the commander. “The tests look like it is stable commander. Pressure is lowering and is back to normal sir.” She said with a smile.

“Your father you say? What did he.—” Rodrigo started to respond, his vocal processor cutting out as he simple let out an exhale and sighed. He raised his left hand up towards his throat and a faint whirring sound could be heard as a micro spanner deployed from his left middle finger. He made some repairs to himself, his demeanor one of irritation rather than concern, before he retracted the tool and said, “Ok, where were we? Right, so tell me about your past, how did you do in the academy, tell me about your last posting. While you do, let’s give this core another shot at starting up, we’ll take it slower this time.”

“Yes sir. So for me, I did well. I took communications and engineering. My father was always an engineer. He loved to work on things when he’s home. My last posting. Is a little complicated. I was a communications officer on my last posting. But then transfered here to be the Chief engineer. Top of my class at the academy.” She said as they were working on things.

The work was taking some time and it had also taken a whole for the scan results to come through. Rodrigo would note that there had been a minor explosive element to the EMP. The flow test showed no further leaks.

Rodrigo chuckled a little, “From Communications to Chief Engineer, those must have been some impressive accolades from the Academy. You’ll have to tell me about your studies, but first lets get this core back online.” Rodrigo replied as he did one final scan with his optical systems. One things came up that he hadn’t noticed before, a very specific chemical chromatography result for Nitrox-4, a readily available explosive used by terrorists of old that had fallen somewhat out of favor for more sophisticated explosives. However in this case it appeared that it wasn’t the primary charge, as it had no known EMP effect, perhaps a precursor? =/\=Rodrigo to anyone in the Science department, please report to Engineering ASAP =/\=

He turned to Lovejoy, “Ready for another go? On your mark Chief”

She smiled there as she was looking at him thinking does he want to have some sort of like a dinner date or something but with the thought in mind she continued to work. “Yes Commander. We can do that once we’re done here. ” She said.

“Alright. I’m ready whenever you are commander.” She looked at him as she was doing the work. She then started to work on getting the scans done with him.

“Let’s get this going” Rodrigo said calmly but with purpose as he initialized the injectors and started to carefully adjust the magnetic conduits to align the flow into the intermix chamber. “Make sure your ratios don’t get past .121”

“Yes sir.” She said as she was keeping an eye on her ratios.

Nothing untoward happened and the initialisation ran smoothly. The flow was aligned. Lovejoy would note that the ratios never went above .121.

For those that knew him, the faintest smirk on his lips indicated he was overjoyed by the progress, but they weren’t out of the water quite yet. He looked towards Lovejoy and thought for a second. He liked to get to know those he worked with or under his command in various ways, although since the War it had been many years since they were in the thick of it. Today was a rare opportunity as he said, “Lieutenant, it’s your engine room, what to next?”

She stood there as everything was going smoothly. “At this time commander I’m thinking we should go ahead and seal it up and go onto the next problem that we have here.” She said to the commander.

Rodrigo understood that it might be a tad stressful, the situation at hand, missing half the senior staff, and now your boss is looking to you to make the decisions. But, she was the Chief Engineer. Every good engineer knew their ships inside and out, he wanted to see why she was selected to be chief on this ship. “Lieutenant what might that next problem be? This is your engine room, lead it as such. I will do as you instruct to make sure we get the ship up and running again.”

“Yes Commander. I know if I had my own team. I would order one of my people to go to the closest console and have them check other systems within the whole engineering room and see if there is anything that is causing the issue. However, if all other issues have been fixed I’d have myself and my team go ahead and jump start the warp core.” She explained how she would have done so.

Rodrigo would normally let out a sigh but given his mechanical lungs he didn’t really breath much anymore. “Alright Lieutenant I don’t mean for this to be stressful for you. What I’m hearing you say is that you’d like for me to go check if everything is within parameters and we can then work on the jumpstart?” He replied as he moved himself over to the nearest panel to start reading the various sensor readings.

(Oh wise and powerful GM, please tell me if we’re within parameters!)

“Yes Commander I would like that if you could do so. I don’t know how well the parameters are going to look like but if they are good we should be able to jumpstart this wonderful girl of ours.” She said with a semi smiles realizing that it could possibly work but it could also might not work.

Tonav made his way down to engineering. “commander i heard you could use some help down here” he said “i may be a scientist but im sure i could help get her back up and running”

Rodrigo turned his head to the new voice and spoke, his voice metallic and staticy as he spoke, “Ensign I believe we have the core itself handled, more that when I scanned the room I picked up the chromatographic residuals for Nitrox-4, indicating that this was a deliberate act. Nitrox however does not possess any electromagnetic properties, I need you to scan the room and the core and figure out what exactly caused the EMP, and how it wasn’t detected by our internal sensors. I don’t want to be on our way to rescue the crew with the possibility of this happening again.”

“on it commander” he said “oh and if i may I have an idea for a bit of a suprise for the romulans”

Rodrigo looked quizzically at the Ensign, and if he had any eyebrows they’d be raised at the idea. “Go on, I’m curious” He replied as he double checked his readings and looked back at Lovejoy, “Let’s kick this thing over shall we? What’s our next step to starting the core?” He asked with a flat tone intermixed with touches of static, his readouts being all normal for the moment.

“Well, since we just did these massive repairs and scans and what not I say we started warming the engines see where that gets us. If they are perfect then we will start warming the core itself. Once said and done with that I’ll monitor it from here and see if we can go to warp.” She started to explain things to the commander and the Ensign as well.
