Privates Matthew Maher “Match” and Sally Eriksson “Stick” were inseparable. They had joined the Marines together and had stayed in the same regiment. They were the best of friends. They hadn’t been on the Wolverine very long and they had already found the mess hall. It was mostly bare at this time save for a couple of men and a small group of Ensigns. As they weren’t due to be on duty for a while yet they had naturally begun to drink. Match and Stick were deep in conversation talking about the prospective mission.
“I don’t know Stick. I’m not sure what to expect, I just follow orders, I’m a Private I’m not paid to think.” Stick let out a frustrated sigh.
“That’s so like you Match. You never want to think outside the box or above your station. Don’t you want to be promoted someday? Maybe one day make it to Captain like our Cap’?” Match almost choaked on his drink.
“What, be like that arrogant whatsit. No way.” Sally shook her head.
“Well, I want to be a Captain one day. Maybe I’ll get there and make you my Sergeant, whether you like it or not!” She exclaimed and Match burst out laughing. A figure then approached the table where they were sitting, cleared his throat and glared down at the two marines. The figure was a big human, broad shouldered and at least 6ft 5. He tried to be imposing and intimidating as possible.
“What you laughin’ at?” He growled. “This is my spot. Clear off.” He stated. Match and Stick bristled at the interruption.
“Move along friend, we were here first.” Match stated taking a swig of beer from his pint glass. The Ensign’s growl deepened, he didn’t like being told “no”, especially not by some good for nothing Marines.
“I’m warning you, move.”
“Oooo, warning now is he?” Stick said mockingly. “What you gonna do big man? Get all angry and sulky.” She added with a mocking sad face.
“Go away and leave us alone.” Match stated. The man boiled over with anger, how dare they.
“Aww, look he’s getting all angry now, aww poor man.” Stick mocked again. “Go and cry and scream into your pillow.” Match laughed at this.
“Did mummy not love you enough?” Stick continued. This was too much for the man and he broke. He landed a punch straight into Stick’s face. Her world went high pitched and black for a moment. She shook her head and shoved the man away, Match leapt to his feet instantly running over to try and grapple the man. The man turned and aimed a punch at Match who predicted this and dodged out of the way. Another man joined and a full on fight ensued. Match and Stick had been doing well keeping the men at bay being on the defensive blocking punches and kicks, sending some back. It was going well until one of the men produced a knife, the only thing Match and Stick knew of this was when the world started spinning and they could feel trails of a sticky substance ooze out of them. They both dropped to the floor, the men with the knives ran away. The group of Ensigns who had been watching the fight leapt up.
=^= Ensign Bogin to Sickbay. We’ve got two marines with serious knife wounds, they’re in a bad way. Get to the mess hall now! It’ll need both Doctors I’m afraid. =^= The young Ensign sounded panicked.

GM Budgie

Dradvia paused, Knife wounds? =/\=On our way.=/\= “Conway, let’s go.” Dradvia grabbed two trauma kits and handed him one as they raced down the corridor. The mess was one deck up from sickbay.

Dradvia called the lift with her medical emergency override, they hopped on. She palmed a hypo in her pocket, dialing it in for a strong sedative, just in case, anyone needed to be subdued to stop from causing more trouble.

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

Dradvia was much more alert than he was.

He was half asleep, for it had been a fairly long shift of nothing. He hadn’t really been paying attention to anything, so much so he had completely missed when the commbadge had made a noise. If it wasn’t for Dradvia’s comment, he probably would have missed the entire ordeal completely.

“Hold on” he commented when the duo stepped onto the turbolift. “Did you just say knife wounds? Who gets stabbed on a Star Fleet vessel?” he commented.

Ensign Zachariah Conway - Medical Officer

“That’s what the crewman reporting it said.” Dradvia shook her head, “I have no idea. But stabbing implies violence and not a culinary accident.”

“Never just an accident with a steak knife is it?” he sigh.

The mess hall was, quite frankly, a mess. Tables and chairs were strewn about the room. Dradvia and Conway would be able to see the two Marines in the middle of the mess. There was blood pooling around them and a group of young Officers panicking. One of the group noticed the Doctors and looked relieved.
“Quick, over here!” She called.

GM Budgie

The young Risan woman jogged over, dodging the many obstacles and people. She glanced over both and knelt down to the worst one. She opened the trauma kit she had brought and pulled out pressure bandage that was paired with a vascular pad. She placed it over the worst wound and activated it. She’d seen wounds like these before. She hadn’t been able to save those people, she hadn’t had access to good medicine. That wouldn’t happen this time. =/\=Dradvia to sickbay. Prepare two surgical frames and prepare for emergency medical transport.=/\= She flipped open the tricorder and watched the readings. She fit the young marine with a rebreather to help with his oxygen and connected him to a portable pulmonary support unit.

The readings that flashed up on the tricorder were not good. Match’s vitals showed that his BP was dropping, it was below 90. His respiratory rate was decreasing and his pulse was also very low. He needed urgent medical attention. The bandage covered the obvious chest wound but he was also bleeding from his thigh. It was dark red and sticky. He opened his eyes and saw Dradvia, his chin quivered slightly.
“H.....help me.” He said softly and weakly, the rebreather then drowned out his voice.

Dradvia set a hand on his shoulder and moved into his field of vision. “I will Private. I promise.” She took out a second pressure bandage with vascular pad and placed it over the wound on his thigh.

She looked at the group of young officers, “Call security! This wasn’t an accident.” She glanced at Conway. “We need to get them back to sickbay. They’ve lost a lot of blood, we may need to put them in stasis.” The worry was obvious as was the seething anger at whomever had caused such damage to one of their own. It was outrageous and unthinkable! She turned worried eyes back to her patient. He had to be stable before she could transport him. She really didn’t want to do surgery on the floor of the mess.

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

The onlookers looked dumbfounded, as if they were stuck. Until one of them came to his senses.
=^=Marduck to Security, we have an emergency in the mess hall, two marines are seriously wounded.=^=

“Do me a favour? Let the boss know as well. He’s not going to enjoy what’s gone on down here”

Match groaned in pain, the rebreather was doing its work well and had helped his respiratory rate. The thigh wound looked deep. His blood pressure continued to drop, if he wasn’t stabilised soon it was likely that he would die.

GM Budgie

Dradvia grabbed a plasma infusion unit. Match needed blood, but that should help stabilize his blood pressure. She connected the unit to his arm and set it to high drip and set it to a slightly higher pressure. It worked like a pressure bag over an IV from history. She was careful though, not to set it too high and blow out his vein.

The young doctor crouched next to the other patient, taking a bag from Dradvia.

With tricorder in hand, he conducted his initial scans. Whilst his one hand was busy with the tricorder, his other was messing with a hypospray. He was readying an “injection” of Anesthezine just in case it was needed.

Weirdly not the first time he’d done surgery on a floor.

Ensign Zachariah Conway - Medical Officer

Initial scans were not good. Stick was also in a bad way. Her left lung was punctured and there were stab wounds across multiple areas of her body. Her kidneys were failing. Conway’s scan also picked up something odd, Stick showed signs that she was in the early stages of pregnancy. She was barely alert. She managed to blurt out the following.
“P…Please, save my baby. Its.....Match’s.” She then collapsed. Her vitals were all over the place. Conway, would also note that there was only one bio bed available and his records would show that Match was a new father too. His family was stationed on the Starbase the Wolverine had just left.

“Dradvia, we have a problem”

He had conducted his initial scans and run his initial checks and he had some concerns. He used his boot to slide his PaDD over to Dradvia, showing her Match’s records. Match had an entire family that he was leaving behind, plus an extra unborn child with Stick. It appeared that Match got around, however he wasn’t going to make a comment on it, it wasn’t his place to do so.

“He has a family” he pointed towards Match. “She’s pregnant” he confirmed, gesturing towards Stick. “And if I recall correctly, when we left Sickbay we had a lack of bio-beds available” he mentioned, pausing. Realisation hit him like a train. “What’s the play? I’m not happy picking lives.”

=/\=Dradvia to Tessan. We have two marine privates in route for immediate surgery. Somatophysical Failure, multiple puncture wounds, and Hypovolemic shock with crashing BP.=/\=

=/\= ” On my way Ensign Get them both triaged and preped for surgury” he said leaving the room at a trot.

Dradvia looked at the records and felt her heart twist into her stomach. He had a family, a child…and another one on the way. “Take the biobed. You can save two lives. She’s too early for the fetus to survive without her.” She didn’t like having to make that decision but it had to be made.

=/\= Conway for Tessan, further to the last. Is there anyway we can clear a bed in Sickbay? Can we step someone down? =/\=

He could be heard breathing hard as he turned the corner toward sickbay, =/\= “Triage accordingly, we can move non critical to a portable” =/\= he said rounding continuing on his way.
It wasn’t the first time Dradvia had done it either, but she knew they had a much better chance of survival in the surgical suite and life support. She looked at Conway.
“He can’t wait anymore. I have to transport him.” =/\=Dradvia to transporter room. Emergency medical transport. Two to beam directly to surgical suite in sickbay.=/\=

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

The transporter chief tapped his console ideally. Oh man, this job is DULL. He thought to himself. As a young boy he’d had dreams of joining Starfleet. He ran through fields pretending to beam people everywhere. He thought that the job would be like that. Who knew that people would still walk. He dreamed of a day when people would jut beam everywhere, then he’d have something to do, all the time! He smiled happily at his simple thoughts. He became more alert when the call came through and beamed to himself. Finally! The moment he had been waiting for ALL day. He could use the transporter, not just for one person but TWO people. Showtime! He cleared his throat and straightened his uniform and put on his most professional transporter voice.
=^=Transporter room here, beaming two directly to Sickbay.=^= He did the motion on the console, giving him a moment of pure bliss.

GM Budgie

=/\= Conway for Transporter Room, going to need another two to Sickbay with some haste =/\= he spoke quickly, shaking his head. He hadn’t administered any first aid, he hadn’t had enough time. He’d have to get working the moment they landed in Sickbay though.

Ensign Zachariah Conway - Medical Officer

The transporter Chief couldn’t believe his ears *another two to beam up! It was a dream come true. He beamed to himself as he slid his hand over the console for the transport.

He’d emergency beamed before, but it still caught him by surprise every time.

The lights engulfed both doctor and patient and within just a few moments they were in Sickbay.

Dradvia and Match appeared in sickbay in a swirl of lights. “Get me a stretcher! Sumer, pull up the private’s medical record and get me 4 units of whole blood. Jones I need a surgical kit and the portable surgical scrubber, Drechtal Beams, and the pulmonary support unit. Prep the surgical bed for incoming. Female, less than 12 weeks pregnant. She’s in worse condition than he is.”

Sumer nodded and exploded into action he pulled up Match’s record and gathered the required units of blood. Jones rushed off and gathered the required items. It would be as if they magically appeared right where Dradvia needed them. Jones then rushed off to prep a surgical bed.

Two of the medical officers helped her lift Match onto the stretcher. Dradiva knelt beside the stretcher and slipped the retinal imager of her WTR-600 Wearable Tricorder over her eyes and focused in on the cut on his thigh. It seemed to have knicked the majory artery. She used the Drechtal Beams to stop the pain receptors from sending and receiving. That alone would help his symptoms as his body could relax from the pain. Then she to the autosuture and began to search for the tear in the artery and stitch it. “Get the blood in him. Keep an eye on his vitals. Connect the pulmonary support unit, and keep pressure on that chest wound.”

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

With the pain receptors under control Match’s body did indeed relax and his vitals began to stabilise. The search for the severed artery began. It was deep, very deep and near the back of his knee. It was leaking blood, fast.

Sumer attached Match to the units of blood to try and replace what Match was losing. Sumer applied pressure on the chest wound after connecting the pulmonary support unit.

Dradvia found it. It was the popliteal artery. If she couldn’t fix it, Match was going to run the risk of amputation due to Ischemia. This was unconscionable. Did they have a traitor on board? Who would attack a marine? In the lounge! Why didn’t anyone stop it? She had to put those questions aside so she could focus on saving him. Those questions could be answered later. “I need a Heparin-bonded synthetic polymer graft. 3.25 mm in diameter, 25 cm in length. Search the medical database and get me a pair of arterial vascular clamps.” Dradvia remembered watching some Earth show one while she was in the Academy. It was about doctors during one of Earth’s old wars. The doctors called it ‘meatball surgery’. That’s how she felt right then. The requested instruments appeared. She had to open the cut in his leg to make room for the clamps. She placed them either side of the damaged part of the popliteal artery to stop the blood loss and with enough room to attach the graft. Carefully she fitted both ends of the graft to the sections of Match’s popliteal artery and began to suture the graft into place. When she was done, she would release the clamps slowly to restart his blood flow.

Conway and Stick materialised shortly after Dradvia and Match. Two nurses rushed over.
“What do you need Doc’?” both of them asked.

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

Moments later Tealor Stepped into the surgical bay having run through the sterilizer and replicated into a surgical outfit. “Status” he said looking at those in the table. He recgoinzed the young woman with baby and his heart skipped a little. Every instinct in him wanted to move and take care of the pregnat woman, but he knew that need needed the entire picture so he could get each of his staff doing what they were good at.

Dr Tealor Tessan
Chief Medical Officer U.S.S Wolverine

“Chaos”

Zachariah was quick to respond to Tessan as he took a few moments to adjust himself to being in Sickbay. “We only have one biobed not in use, the pregnant lady is taking it” he gestured to Stick. He quickly cast his eyes over to Dradvia, checking his colleague was coping. She appeared to be right in the thick of it.

“Punctured lung, kidney failure” he spoke quickly, casting his eyes to the nurses who had rushed over. “Where do you even want to start?” he asked in response to the duo asking what he needed. “150ml Inaprovaline and an Auto-Suture”. Whilst he was talking, he was busy getting Stick onto the bio-bed and making sure her vitals were visible. He cast his eyes back over to his tricorder, trying to look for anything that would hint as to why the private was in full kidney failure.

Ensign Zachariah Conway - Medical Officer

The duo nodded and provided the required instruments. Conway would note that the kidney failure as due to a stab wound, she had multiple, all over her body. It seemed as though Stick had the most she was worse for ware.

Stick was a mess.

Zachariah shook his head, taking a Hypospray and prepping it with the Inaprovaline which the nurses provided. He needed to both stabilise the blood pouring from the marine and get tissue regenerating in the kidney area to prevent her completely passing, both of which could be started by the Inaprovaline. The young doctor pressed the Hypospray against the marine and used it, filling her body with 150ml of Inaprovaline.

He was aware that human’s had two kidney’s however, you only needed one to survive. If the Inaprovaline didn’t have the required effect, he was well aware he’d have to look at more invasive surgery. He was hopeful that the Inaprovaline would have an effect however, at least start slowing the bleeding and with enough time start generating the regrowth of the tissue.

The Inaprovaline did start to work but Stick’s body was too badly damaged and she started to deteriorate again. It looked like she would need much more invasive surgery if she was going to survive.

The young doctor cast his eyes across the female, attempting to spot where the majority of the blood was coming from and his best guess was “everywhere”. She appeared to have taken quite a few knife wounds to multiple body parts. He took the auto-suture and began to work slowly, attempting to patch up some of the wounds to the best of his abilities.

There were smaller, superficial wounds. These the autosuture healed effectively. There were other, deeper wounds , one to her ribs that looked like went through into a lung, that would require more intervention.

Somatophysical Failure, multiple puncture wounds, and Hypovolemic shock. The vascular pad and pressure bandage is co trolling the chest wound. Plasma and blood infusion alo g with rebreather is starting to stabilize his vitals. The knife severed his popliteal artery. I have clamped off the artery on both sides and am grafting a Heparin-bonded synthetic polymer graft to repair the artery. He’s loosing blood too quickly and runs the risk of Ischemia and amputation. Pulmonary support unit is active,” Dradvia reported as she worked from the floor.

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

The clamps provided the desired effect. The flow of blood was stemmed allowing the placement of the graft, which was successful. This was one issue dealt with. For the moment at least.

GM Budgie

Ensign Zachariah Conway - Medical Officer

Dradvia started to call for the autosuture and then stopped. She had to do this manually. From the sounds by the biobed Stick was in worse shape. “Any of you manually suture?” She asked the people assisting. She worked steadily to close the leg wound. “Give me a vitals update.” As soon as she closed the leg or could hand it off she would start on the chest wound.

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

The gathered professionals all looked at each other dumb founded.
“Did she say manually suture?” they mumbled to each other. One of them was about to reply “no” when a nurse at the back raised her hand.
“I....I can do it.” She stated, an Orion called Gana. She stepped forwards towards Match.
“Let me.” She interjected replacing one of the orderlies, turning to Dradvia she tilted her head questioningly.
“Where would you like me to close up first Doctor?”
The other attending looked over the vitals, they weren’t great. His respiratory rate was high and blood pressure was still very low but to be expected.
“Mostly very low, but holding...... for now.” The attending replied.

GM Budgie

Dradvia closed her eyes briefly. Gana was professional and good with patients. It wasn’t her fault that Dradvia had such trauma connected to species. Gana chose a different way of life. She nodded at her, “Close the knee. I’m going to start working on his chest. If you run into any problems let me know. Pava assist her.”

“Yes Doctor.” Gana said as she stepped forward and began to close the knee up. She held her tongue slightly out as she stitched concentrating hard.

Dradvia moved to give Gana full access to Match’s knee and then peeled back the pressure bandage on his chest. She scanned it with the visual scanner, assessing the damage and determining where to start.

Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer

The scan to the chest showed several broken ribs, a pneumothorax and a pierced trachea. Someone had really done a measure on him.
