That was impressive..”Wow.” She paused by her door. “Onya vee’tay-ah su-trey mahthonbe’. Good night Sisnil.” She disappeared through her door.Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“Night,” Sisnil said, and went into his own room. The next day he was in the galley early again. He had a small breakfast in front of him and a PaDD and he seemed like he was intently focused on it.
~ Zoi
Dradvia never came to breakfast though. Perhaps she had a different shift or overslept? Whatever it was she never showed in the galley that morning.
The fact was Dradvia had had a horrible night. Too many memories, too much trauma, and too much shame about her behavior over the holographic monk. Sisnil had actually taken her advice and then shared the program with her. What did she do? Freaked out over nothing. She was too embarrassed to go to the galley and run into Sisnil, and she was too bothered by her memories and nightmares to face a lot of people. So she had gone straight to sickbay.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil didn’t mind not seeing her, though he did find it odd. He finished up and left the galley and went about his business. Some officers had some yeoman type tasks for him that involved running something to medical, so he did that.
~ Zoi
Dradvia was calibrating tricorders. Luckily it was a simple task. She didn’t have to fix them, just determine if they were correct or not. When Sisnil came in, she was scanning her vitals over and over with each device. She felt extremely focused on the task, consciously using it to stop from thinking about other thingd.
A nurse greeted him when he came in. “Hello, what can I do for you?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“I need to drop this off, that’s all.” Sisnil said. He was holding a box of supplies. “Dee!” He said when he saw her.
~ Zoi
Dradvia looked up quickly, slightly fumbling the tricorder. Only one person called her ‘Dee’, so there was no panic. She was just startled. She walked over. The nurse smiled and went back to her work. The young woman needed some friends.
“Sisnil, is everything alright?” Embarrassment for not seeing him, but also concern that he was hurt or ill.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“No, just dropping things off. Got me on ship-butler duty again.” Sisnil hefted the box. “Medical supplies, mostly consumables. Where do you want them?” He grinned, “And need a test dummy for all those tricorders?”
~ Zoi
Dradvia felt her cheeks heat. Was he just bored or actually wanting to be around her? His grin made her feel almost giddy. “Oh, um, this way.” She crossed the medical boy towards the labs and opened the storage room. “On the center table.”
She locked the room after they left. “Sure, if you want to help.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil set it down and then followed her. “I’d rather do that with you than tote this crap around the ship. Some starry eyed Ensign can do that.” He said.
~ Zoi
“Well umm just hop on the biobed.” She flipped it on and watched the display screen. “I will use that scan as your base line. Then I will uh scan you a hundred times to make sure the tricorders match.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil laughed lightly as he got up on the biobed, lay back, and folded his hands behind his head. Compared to his last scan, which was the only one in his file, this one was better, more normal. There were still noticeable signs of stress, but the sleep deprivation was fading. “Scan away.” He said to her.
~ Zoi
Dradvia wasn’t comparing scans. The fact his stress level and sleep hormones were off helped the calibration. It insured the tricorders hadn’t defaulted.
She ran a hand scanner over him, then another, and so on.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
He was patient and still as she ran scan after scan and then checked the results. He eventually closed his eyes. That was good - it meant he trusted her decently. “They always give you the tedious jobs?” He asked.
~ Zoi
Dradvia had been quiet, unsure what to say, but like she had told him, she found casual conversation hard sometimes. Especially if she had to initiate the conversation. Being silent was such a rule to live by. It was easier when others spoke up first. Sometimes.
“No. It needed to be done though, and I don’t mind. It’s better than sitting around doing nothing. Staying busy… helps.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil nodded. “Yeah.” He said, understanding in his voice. “I could go shock myself in engineering, if that helps,” he joked and grinned, opening his eyes to look up at her.
~ Zoi
Her eyes flicked to his, and he could feel concern and amusement warring for supremacy. “Sisnil!” she hissed, “Don’t you dare. I enjoy my work, but I don’t want you to hurt yourself. I can manage with tedious tasks.” Besides, it wasn’t so tedious with him there. “So when do you think they’ll actually give you real work to do?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“When something intelligency comes up and Captain Hypocrite decides it’s worth the risk to let me help with.” Sisnil said definitively. “He thinks I’m going to hack the main computer, steal all the top secret files, disappear, and sell them to the Syndicate.”
~ Zoi
“It would save your life if you did. If he was worried about it, he shouldn’t have brought you on board.” She glanced at him, “Why are you calling him Captain Hypocrite?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“Not Commander Morris, Captain Beaudroux,” Sisnil replied. “Because I maaaay have borrowed a few personnel files, and his Captainy self is as much a criminal as I am.”
~ Zoi
Her face was passive, but fear spread through her. She didn’t know Cpt. Beaudroux. She hadn’t even met him yet. What kind of ship did Star Fleet send her to? Would he trade them all for his own gain? Was he involved in something worse than the Syndicate? There was nothing worse than the Syndicate. That wasn’t true though.
“Oh,” was all she said in that neutral tone. She set aside the tricorder, labeling for recalibration and picked up the next one.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil glanced up at her, “For what it’s worth, he’s a commissioned officer of Starfleet. Whatever his past is, he’s chosen his loyalty.”
~ Zoi
Dradvia glanced down at him, “Has he? From what I hear, in less than a week on board, deep cover assignments are a dime a dozen here. I know for a fact the Syndicate works the same way.” Her eyes were pleading, that he understood her fear even if he didn’t agree. “Everyone has a weakness that they would do anything to protect.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“True,” Sisnil said. He shrugged. “I can’t say much without it being just as true about myself.”
~ Zoi
Dradvia nodded. “You can only speak for yourself. I haven’t heard anything about him or met him. I haven’t really met anyone except you.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil smiled. “Well when you do, you’ll have to make your own opinion about him.” He said.
~ Zoi
“That’s true, but I doubt I ever meet him.” She placed a tricorder down and picked up another one, “Captain’s don’t bother with little people like newly minted ensigns.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil shrugged again. “Their loss.” He said. “How many more of those are there? How many tricorders does this ship have?”
~ Zoi
Dradvia flushed slightly. She’d started over when he offered. She’d been almost done, but she liked having him around. “Just a few more. Basically we have one for every crew member and then a few extra. Most of them are stored in emergency med kits around the ship. That way they are easily accessible or if we happen upon a disaster situation and need to distribute.” She quickly finished up the last handful of them. “Sorry.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“No, don’t worry. I have nowhere better to be. I was just curious.” Sisnil shrugged. “I can barely get one decent one on my ship. These are state of the art.”
~ Zoi
“It’s just a different design. Tricorders haven’t changed much in the last 50 years. They do all same things, just sleeker and more compact. Well and the HUD display is really neat, but I don’t like the double vision.” She set the last one down. “You should be able to get a newer model. Maybe not the latest, but they sell them as surplus. Maybe we can find one for them?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“If we could get it to them,” Sisnil reminded her, “But thanks.” He sat up. “Darn, all done? No more to go find and do so I can lay around and do nothing a little longer?”
~ Zoi
Was he teasing her or serious? “Well if you want to help me restock these emergency kits, then I can get the next batch and calibrate those.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil shrugged and nodded. “Okay. Let’s do that.” He hopped off the biobed. “Do you need me to do anything?”
~ Zoi
“Only if you want to. I won’t give you menial tasks just to keep an eye on you.” She knew he was just bored, lonely, and going stir crazy. There was no way he was there because of her.
She laid out five emergency med kits cases. She put a tricorder in each. There were also packs of hypospray vials, hyposprays, triage first aid kits, cortical stimulator, and Dermal regenerator sitting nearby waiting to go in.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil knew what most of the items were. He grabbed one of each and handed them to her to go in each kit. The hyposprays and vials he grabbed a couple and then looked at her, “How many do you need?”
~ Zoi
“One of each for each kit.” She took the first set, “Thank you,” she slid the vials into the protective slots and then placed the hypospray. She closed the case with a soft snick and then reached toward him for the next set.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil handed her one of each thing for the next kit. He could be doing any number of terribly boring, menial tasks, but he’d rather be here with her than somewhere else. As she closed up each kit, he handed her the things for the next one.
~ Zoi
“Thanks Sisnil.” Dradvia didn’t know why, but she felt calmer when he was around. Which was counterintuitive because he was probably the most dangerous person on the ship to her. She didn’t feel threatened by him though. She just liked having his company.
When the kits were done, she picked them up. “These go to deck 9. I’ll swap them out and bring the others here to check and restock. Deck by deck basically.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil nodded. “Okay, I’ll wait here? Or walk with you?” He was asking her. It seemed awkward to stand around sickbay alone, getting the stinkeye from most of the officers.
~ Zoi
“You can walk with me.” She glanced at him while she gathered the kits. “I mean, it’s kind of boring in here just waiting. You wanted to avoid that, right?” She paused, “I mean if you don’t want to or would rather find something else to do…”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“No, I’d rather walk with you.” He said firmly. “I just don’t want to step on your toes.” He followed her out of sickbay. “I’d rather do something boring with you than something boring someone else makes me do by myself either way.”
~ Zoi
“Well as long as you walk beside me you can’t step on them.” It was so easy that Dradvia was actually shocked to realize she made a joke.
Sisnil grinned. “Nice.”
She stepped onto the lift, “Deck 9,” she said to the air. “If you socialize more you’ll find more interesting people than me.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“No, I won’t.” Sisnil replied without hesitation. “There is no uppity genius Starfleet officer more interesting to me than you.”
~ Zoi
Dradvia made a sound of disbelief. “Well I don’t think I’m uppity. We barely talk though. How can I be interesting?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“You don’t need to talk a ton to be interesting,” Sisnil said with a shrug. “You’re pretty nervous, I know, but you’re still here, which means you’re quite brave. Considering your background, ‘a little nervous’ is pretty fortunate. That’s enough to be interesting. Not to mention not being an uppity little academy-at-eighteen genius kid.”
~ Zoi
“Academy-at-eighteen is normal, anyone who says otherwise is selling something. Probably hot air for their own ego.” Dradvia stepped off the lift. What was her unease? “I suppose I just don’t want to bore you more. You have more than enough of that already.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“You won’t bore me. And if you were, I wouldn’t be here.” Sisnil said. “I don’t want you to worry about that.” She worried about enough as it was. “I’ll make myself a holo-game or something.”
~ Zoi
Drasvia didn’t know why, but that gave her a warm feeling in her stomach. “I worry about everything. After 4 years I still can’t get past it.” She stopped beside an emergency locker and switched out the kit. She closed it and moved down the corridor to the next one. “What did you do for fun, on your ship? Did you have a holodeck?” She didn’t know if a cargo ship would have one. Was it a luxury there or was it standard to ease the long quiet months hauling?
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil nodded. “There was a small holodeck. But we also played cards or things like.” He looked at her, “We’re not a haul giant things of cargo ship, we’re more of a small cargo transport ship.”
~ Zoi
“So…does that mean shorter trips?” She figured even long distance places needed smaller items, or were they relayed?
“Sometimes.” Sisnil said. “We usually bring smaller shipments of highly needed items. We’re not a slow ship. We couldn’t outrun a starship or anything, but we’re not slow.”
“Well it’s better than the hayday of warp 2 cargo ships that spent years between stops. Growing up having never seen planetside. I bet it was an adventure,” Dradvia mused.
“I never played poker, but I like card games just to play.” She switched out another kit. “What kind of hologames do you like?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“I had one back on my ship, that I want to recreate, helps keep my skills sharp. It’s a mission simulator, I create scenarios where I’m under fire or otherwise in danger and see if I can get out of them. If I get shot, I lose, even if it wouldn’t have been a fatal shot.”
~ Zoi
“Is that,” she paused and glanced at him from the corner of her eye. “Is it fun or more because of practicality? It’s a poor substitute for the adventure you are used to.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“Both,” he replied, grinning at the look she gave him. “Yes, it is, it won’t replace my crew or my former life, but it is something.”
~ Zoi
Dradvia shook her head slightly, “I don’t know what you will do when you leave here, or if you can, but I hope you get back to them one day. It’s not right.” She stacked the medkits and headed back to the lift to restock those.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil smiled a little bit. “You know, that is an odd viewpoint.” He looked at her as they headed back to the lift. “There are a lot of people who’d say I deserve this - or worse.”
~ Zoi
Drasvia shrugged, “Maybe, but I didn’t grow up in the utopia of the Federation. Risa isn’t the idyllic paradise tourists think it is. They don’t see past the glitz and sunshine. Even with all the advanced technology, some of us still are forced to do whatever to get by. Stealing, smuggling, being forced into impossible situations by truly evil people. That isn’t a ghost story to tell children, it happens. People just look the other way.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“Sounds like my home world.” Sisnil commented. “We’re no tourist hotspot but everyone things we’re this nice little place where humans, betazoids, Andorians, and Vulcans live side-by-side in peace. They think it’s a utopia. For the most part, sure, those groups get along, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t crime and bad things don’t happen.”
~ Zoi
Dradvia nodded as she stepped back into sickbay. She set the kits on the table and opened them. “It’s everywhere, people are just too content to see.” She pulled items out and grabbed the tricorders. “Alright, back on my biobed please.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
Sisnil hopped and lay back again, making himself comfortable. “Have fun.” He took a slow breath and shrugged. “There’s no way to have a society without it. Sad, but true.”
~ Zoi
“It is sad, and only made worse by people ignoring it.” It was just a fact of life.
However, Dradvia was having fun taking her scans. It had nothing to do with being a newly minted Ensign and doctor or being on her first ship. It had everything to do with her volunteer. She could watch him while she worked. She liked him. Obvious to him, not so much to her, she was attracted.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
It had become apparent to Sisnil. Perhaps if he weren’t empathic, it wouldn’t be so obvious, but he was, and he definitely knew. It was about now that he realized not only was she attracted, but that part of the reason she was enjoying this so much was that she got to watch him. The thought made him grin slightly. He stretched and looked up at her, “Be sure to take your time and make sure they’re definitely right.”
~ Zoi
“Huh?” She blinked at him. His voice pulling her back from her stray thoughts. He could feel the embarrassment, but it didn’t show. “Oh, of course. I don’t want to end your nap prematurely.” Or maybe he didn’t want to help her again later. Then again he had volunteered. She hadn’t asked. “Plus, I have to make a good impression right? Don’t want Dr. Tessan to think I don’t know what I’m doing.” Plus it meant he stayed longer.
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“Exactly,” he said and grinned. “impress the brass and all that. And let me lay around with you all day.” Yes, now that he knew, he could mess with her a little bit. Not that he wasn’t also attracted.
~ Zoi
He could feel the heat rush through her, but it didn’t show. He could also feel her uncertainty and how his statement left her excited but confused at the same time. She wasn’t sure why she felt that sudden thrill, she also wondered if he was just messing with her. “Well, you have to keep occupied or who knows where you might wander. Right into the corner of a bulkhead from boredom.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“The airlock might get really appealing if I get too bored,” Sisnil joked. “But I don’t know, maybe I’d just injure myself enough to be in your care for a while.”
~ Zoi
Just a faint hint if pink hit her cheeks as she turned away to grab another tricorder. She was sure now he was teasing her, but why?
She made a note on her PaDD about the last tested device before turning back. “Hmmm be careful with that method. If the injury is self inflicted, then Dr. Tessan will take over. You will be in his care and not mine.”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“Ugh,” Sisnil rolled his eyes. “Shrinks.” He grinned at Dee, “Then I guess that method won’t work.” Not that he was seriously considering it. He had a dark sense of humour, but he wasn’t actually about to do anything like that.
~ Zoi
Dradvia set the tricorder down and grabbed the last one. She gave that shrug that said she felt awkward. She knew counselors did a good job, and she had been seeing them since she had been freed. It was uncomfortable to have a stranger know so much intimate detail of her life and to constantly analyze it all.
She looked at his scans, “Well if you don’t start getting restful sleep, you will be in my care. How is the Delta wave inducer working?”
Ens. Dradvia, Medical Officer
“It’s helping,” he said honestly. “I think it’s just the stress.” He glanced at her, “Whatever you do, don’t go telling Tessan that.”
~ Zoi
