David stepped off the turbolift onto Deck 7 a few minutes past 2400. He probably should be in bed, but it was relaxing to wander the lowest deck of the ship this late. Few crew members were down here normally, and it was even less during the night shift - even the lighting was dimmed slightly. It was nice to be able to spend some time outside his quarters just able to reflect and decompress from the day of Command - of course, before too long he’d head up a deck and get into bed.

Sisnil stood against the wall near the holosuite, eyes closed. He looked tired, even more so than a few days ago when they’d had his meeting. He hadn’t noticed David, at least not right away. Then he heard the Commander’s footsteps and looked over. “Commander. What are you doing here this late?”

David smiled slightly, his expression likewise exhausted. “Just wandering. It’s a good way to think before I sleep. How about you?” He quirked one eyebrow. “Have you been sleeping much?”

No. But Sisnil simply shrugged. “Enough. It’s a little late for ‘before you sleep’. Don’t you have big, Starfleet Captainy things to do?”

“I did them earlier, hence now being ‘before I sleep’. He yawned. “The paperwork’s the worst bit of the job.”

“Believe it or not, I had paperwork, too.” Sisnil said. “Not nearly as much. But I was never interested in Starfleet anyway.”

“Why not?” David asked, genuinely curious. “There’s the red tape aspect, but you’re obviously competent and don’t have a problem with ships and space.”

“Not everyone has a high opinion of Starfleet and the Federation,” Sisnil replied. “Though, you are an odd one.”

“Oh?” David asked. Much of the exhaustion in his voice and expression was beginning to fade, though he was still clearly tired. “What do you mean?”

“You’re the only person I’ve known to shoot a man and then check if he’s okay,” Sisnil replied. His exhaustion did not change. As a doctor, David could probably tell he wasn’t sleeping well.

“I’m not going to give up caring for someone just because in that moment they’re my enemy - I never intended to do you what harm I could avoid, and occasionally stunning can have some side effects, so it was the right thing to check you once you weren’t immediately a threat.”

Sisnil regarded him with a mixed expression - cold, but curious, almost confused. “Mercy gets you killed. ‘Ought to learn that, working in intelligence.”

“There is always a small risk that it’ll end up hurting me, but that’s well worth not compromising my morals over. I can act when I need to, but if I don’t need to, it’s worth showing that mercy.”
