After leaving the Counselor’s office, Shirazi returned to the bridge and sat down next to Odinson. “I just had a very odd encounter with our new counselor.” Her brows were drawn together, giving her a thoughtful look.

D’vash turned and looked sidelong at Shirazi. “And? What do you think of him? I had an irresistible urge to throw a mouse into the room just to see what would happen,” he said with a mischievous grin.

Odinson (XO)

The Captain laughed. “Don’t you dare!” But it was an entertaining thought. “As you know, I went for my evaluation. I was thinking it was just a formality, you know, to check the appropriate boxes in my file. Not so.”

She looked at him with raised brows, inviting him to inquire how she had been wrong.

“He told me to come back when I wasn’t in a hurry. The odd thing is, that I wasn’t in a hurry.” She pulled in one corner of her bottom lip as she thought. “Do you suppose it was some kind of power play?”

“Counselors are the worst kind of people to play poker against, Captain,” D’vash began. “They are trained to read people, to notice their tells and such. On Earth, many domesticated species of animal, dogs and cats, for instance, have an almost a 6th sense to ascertain someone’s intentions. Perhaps that is also true of Lt. Sathut. And you, sir, may have given off an unintentional sense of needing to be somewhere else.”

“Of course, that’s the Intel operative in me speaking. Maybe he was simply testing you to see how you handle confrontation?” The XO grinned again as his gaze returned to the forward view screen.

Odinson (XO)

“I’d rather just keep my distance from any professional counseling, but I suppose I’ll have to see him eventually.” Shirazi didn’t like the thought that Sathut might be testing his power with her so soon. She also didn’t like being dismissed—which is what the counselor had done. It was something she wasn’t used to, especially on her own ship and she was curious as to how much it actually bothered her.

“So you have already had your evaluation? What was your take on the Raka?”

“Unlike yours, Captain, my meeting with him was quite pleasant. He was aware of things I couldn’t discuss regarding my past, nor did he try to push any of those topics. I think the crew will warm up to him, at least those that don’t suffer from Ailurophobia.”

The XO half turned toward Shirazi and said with a smirk, “You don’t think you may subconsciously have an aversion to cats, do you. That would be quite the catch-22–not being able to seek out professional help because that person is the cause of your fears?”
