Sathut out.=^= He picked up his nearly-empty mug and finished off the last of his Jinnen, sighing as he noted that the sweet liquid was now gone.

An hour later the annunciator sounded. However while waiting Sathut saw something somewhat odd in the Ensign’s file. There was a noted religious exception to any use of telepathy for any reason.

“Enter,” Sathut exclaimed, and the door slid open. He winced slightly at the loud noise though.

“Welcome. Take a seat, ensign. May I call you Dius? Is there anything you would like for a drink?” he asked

Dius eyed the counsellor warily, here we go again he thought. Another chipper counsellor who thinks they have the right to pry into everyone else’s life. “No thank you Ma’am. May I know why I have been summoned?”

IC: The felinoid smiled. It was a kind smile, but didn’t have an insane amount of energy in it. “Protocol, I suppose. As your ship’s counselor, it is my duty to speak with each and every one of you and get to know you. If I were to neglect one or more of you, it would be a violation of my contract,” he explained. Although he wasn’t sure why an officer who would have gone through Starfleet would hate counselors as much as this one seemed to.

Dius stepped forward and sat down. With a guarded expression he said “Actually your job is to determine that I am of sound mental health and competency to be capable of carrying out my ship board duties for the duration of any extended deployment. Getting to know me is not required to fulfill that function.”

“Well, then, if you know so much about my job, why is it that you must ask why you have been summoned?” Sathut asked with an amused purr. “Evidently you have been summoned in order to facilitate the determination of your mental health. Now, of course, my interpretation of the letter of the law is different than yours. For you, something like a survey of a file should be enough to determine mental health. But I, someone trained in the art of counseling, see it differently. To know the status of someone’s mind, you must, well… know their mind. Getting to know who they are as a person, as a result, in fact, is required for this approach. You see, a ship’s counselor is not the same as a psychologist. My job is primarily in maintaining mental health through counselling. Otherwise I would not be required to stay on the ship constantly. To this end, I cannot determine the best approach for helping someone through existing problems unless I know them, to some degree,” he spoke.

“On the contrary you could have summoned me for any number of reasons. Each ranging on a scale of probabilities. Your message did not indicate the purpose of your request. As for your placement on this vessel I find your argument insufficient. This vessel is often deployed for extended time periods. It would be inefficient and dangerous to not station aboard appropriate psychiatric facilities similar to say not having any of the other medical staff stationed aboard.”

“I am willing to discuss matters pertaining to my mental health but beyond that I will not agree to any discussions. My life and my personality are my private effects and I will choose whom I allow to know those things about me. If you are unwilling to accept those constraints then I will lodge formal protest under ethical and religious grounds.”
