M’Lene sighed as she looked at her map for the third time and tried to work out where she was. She had of course looked at all the schematics before arriving but she hadn’t quite realised how massive the place was. Her village back home was probably less than quarter the size of the vast complex and in the few days she had been on Oed she’d had to ask for directions multiple times. Sighing she meandered round the next corner and breathed a sigh of relief as she saw the hospital in front of her. Not that she was particularly looking forward to being peered at and prodded but she just wanted to get it over with now.

She strode through the doors confidently and made her way to the reception desk. Instinctively smoothed her fur, M’Lene gently cleared her throat and smiled at the receptionist. “Um, excuse me? I’m M’Lene, I’m here for my physical and psychological examinations…” she asked hesitantly, half hoping that they were too busy and she could put it off for another day.

The receptionist smiled. “Of course we can. If you would fill out these forms, or if you have your medical records with you, I can get you put in for the next appointment in 20 minutes. Will that work?” she asked handing M’Lene a PaDD to fill out.

Yavia

M’Lene gulped and tried to fake a sincere smile. “Sounds perfect,” she replied as she began to ferret through the well worn bag on her shoulder, resisting the urge to play with the fidget toy she kept on her to satisfy her feline need for play. Finally she pulled a PaDD from the depths of the bag and handed it over.

“I believe this should have everything you need,” she replied as she casually twisted the fur on the back of her hand. It was a distraction technique she used when she was nervous, although she wasn’t even sure why she was apprehensive, it was hardly the first physical exam she’d had but there was just something about hospitals that put her on edge.

The receptionist took and smiled. “Thank you. Just a moment and I’ll add this to the system.” She tapped away at the PaDD and sent it over to her own station before handing it back. “Welcome to Sacred Heart M’Lene. If you will take that hall just behind me to the left, it will lead you to the waiting room. A nurse will be out to get you shortly.”

Lt. Cmdr. Fayth, SFCMO

M’Lene gave another less than genuine smile as she hastily stuffed everything back in her bag and slung it back over her shoulder. She dawdled her way along to the waiting room and plonked herself down in the corner, thumbing through the articles that had been left on the table next to her for a bit of light reading. “A brief history of warp core mechanics…the evolution of the Kamantzi Tribe on Rajallon IV…popular Vulcan side dishes…” she casually mumbled the titles aloud before shaking her head and pushing them to one side. She opted instead for a quick cat nap which she was long overdue for. Yawning audibly she tucked her legs up onto the chair and rested her head on her knees for a quick bit of shuteye whilst she waited.

M’Lene didn’t have to wait long. She hadn’t even really gotten the chance to close her eyes for long when the door opened and a Deltan woman, wearing the lavendar scrubs of Sacred Heart walked out. “M’Lene,” she called.

Yavia

M’Lene jumped to her feet, perhaps a little too eagerly to hide the fact that she had been dozing. “Yes, that’s me…” she replied a little sheepishly as she picked up her bag and went to greet the woman, extending her furry paw.

The woman smiled. “I’m Nurse Crockett. Welcome to Sacred Heart. Come this way and we’ll get you started.” She led M’Lene through the door and down a hall to an alcove and activated a privacy field. “If you will just have a seat on the biobed.” She reached over and turned the bed on to start taking her vitals. “What brings you in today?”

Yavia

M’Lene gracefully leaped onto the biobed, showing her feline nimbleness. “I’ve just arrived here, so I need my initial physical exam…oh and a psyche one as well,” she added, a lot less keen on the second task.

The Deltan woman smiled. “No problem.” She walked over to the computer console and typed for a moment. “There we go. They will be expecting you, up on the third floor when you are done here.” She walked back over and recorded the various vitals the displays were showing. “Alright, if you’ll just wait a moment, I’ll get Dr. Mek’vek.” She turned out the door and very shortly after a Bolian woman entered with a huge smile on her face. “Hello!” she sing songed. “I’m Dr. Mek’vek. Nurse Crockett tells me you are new to Oed. Welcome, Welcome. What brings you to our slice of frontier life?”

Yavia

M’Lene instinctively smiled back, somewhat surprised by the jolly doctor. “To be honest, I just fancied a change of pace. Since leaving star-fleet I haven’t really found my place again yet and there isn’t much call for a terraformer on my home planet,” she replied, impressed by how at ease the doctor was making her feel. Normally she was very closed off during these types of examinations but she was slowly learning that Oed was no ordinary place. “How long have you been here?” She asked curiously.

“OH! You’re a terraformer! How exciting. Everyone is just all abuzz about everything. We are all so excited to watch everything grow here now that the dome is gone.” Mek’vek laughed happily. “Oh, I’ve been here since I was a child. My parents were here from right after the comet strike. They were engineers on the dome project. Oed is a bit barren,” she shook her head, “well it was, but something about it kept us here.” She moved the scanner around as she spoke taking her scans.

Yavia

M’Lene couldn’t help but smile at the doctor’s joyful disposition. “Indeed, it is such an exciting opportunity to see the transformation first hand. Most of my work has been theoretical or simulation based research but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to really get stuck into such a huge project. So I’m guessing you know everyone here pretty well?” She asked curiously. M’Lene hadn’t had much chance to meet people yet as she was still trying to get to grips with the culture and customs on Oed V.

The doctor’s scans would reveal several old healed injuries, most of which were to M’Lene’s limbs and joints.

“Oh yes, well I like to think I do. The colony has gotten so big now that it’s hard to know everyone. It’s exciting though, to see all the new people arriving. Oh and the traffic. You know it only used to be the mining crews coming in and out. Leaving to their mines and coming back on rotation. All the mines had mini domes, of course. Now people just zip back and forth whenever they want. It’s like a fairytale.”

M’Lene nodded and chuckled. “It’s certainly a bit of a culture shock for me, I come from a very small village which isn’t even quarter of the size of this complex!”

Mek’vek laughed, “And we are considered a small colony.”

Mek’vek looked over the scans. “Several old injuries, do any of them give you problems still?”

Yavia

M’Lene instinctively stretched her wrist which was the most recent of her injuries, a slight grimace appearing on her face. “I still have a bit of pain in my wrist after tearing some cartilage a few years ago but it doesn’t bother me too much,” she replied, picking up that the doctor probably wanted a bit more information. “I’ve been a gymnast since I was a small child and the level I work at does have the unfortunate side effect of wearing down the joints and fairly regular accidents. I just do it for fun now but a few years ago I represented Macaderna at the Federation Olympic Games and won the silver medal on floor,” she added proudly as she thought back to the excitement of stepping out onto the floor in front of so many people.

She scanned M’Lene’s wrist again. “A Session or two with the tissue migrator should heal that up a bit better. A little physical therapy might help as well. Would you be interested in that?’

Yavia

M’Lene smiled and nodded. Although there was a medical facility in her village, it was nowhere near as advanced as the facilities at Sacred Heart and apart from some basic repairs to her cartilage, the doctors back home hadn’t managed to heal her injury fully. “Yes please, I would greatly appreciate that,” she replied and let out a satisfied purr.

Yavia opened a cabinet and pulled down a device and attached it to an opposable arm frame. “Thank you, Yavia,” Mek’vek said as she adjusted the device and angled it. There was a rest for M’Lene’s arm. “Just rest your arm here.”

Once she had, Mek’vek finished linning it up and then put in the settings. “Just hold still.”

“Would you like a drink or small snack while you wait,” the nurse asked.

Yavia

M’Lene stretched out her furry arm as instructed and held still. “I wouldn’t say no to a Nepata tea if you have one?” She asked hopefully as she casually stroked her mane with her spare hand.

“Of course. Now you just hold still and I’ll be right back with that,” Nurse Yavia said as she stepped out of the room for a moment. She returned and set the cup beside M’Lene. “There you go. How is your arm feeling?”
