It was a long morning, with not enough caffeine in the quadrant. Fortunately Karina was walking on a good deal of quiet giddiness and anticipation. She redirected her calls to the admin assistant and found purchased two lunches from one of the student run food trucks. She was sitting on a bench in the small lawn of the Main Hall of the university. She knew Jewels might not make it, but she hoped Jewel would.

She was late, she was always late. She parked her car grabbed the two coffees and moved as fast as she could without spilling. She’ll wait, She’ll wait she repeated to her self, don’t blow this Jewels she so special. You have prioritize your own needs and push work aside some times. She said repeating what her therapist had said, maybe she needed to book an appointment.

Ten minutes of waiting it almost felt like Jewel was not going to make it, and then Karina saw it, A tall female dressed all in black, power walking down the the walkway toward her, two cups in her had. How she was not spilling them was a mystery.

Karina had checked her comms several times. She kept telling herself to relax. If Jewel didn’t show she would comm her later to say hi. If she had changed her mind that was okay. She had an hour, she could wait.

Then she saw her, rushing towards her. Karina stood and almost waved, but it was clear Jewel had seen her.

“Sorry, Sorry, Sorry” she said as she walked up, and shoved the coffee at Karina. “Raktajino its a double, sorry I had a meeting with the commissioner and then I had to get coffee’s and Raktajino apparently is hard to come by, and then I had to stop at a crime scene. Oh oh, and then this idot was parked behind me and decided to have a conversation with me and tried to ask me on a date, and I was like I dig chicks to try to get him to shut up and move his car,. and then I got her and there is not parking, I mean how can a campus this big not have parking so I parked over there” she said pointing to the other side of campus, and left my emergency light cause i think I’m parked illegally, but I needed to see you and” she finally stop and took a large breath, her shoulders sinking. “I’m sorry” she finally sighed out with a crooked pathetic smile.

“Do not be. You warned me.” Karina smiled taking the Raktajino. Again she was struck by how adorable Jewel was. “I should have told you where to park. We had parking there,” she nodded toward Jewel’s car, “but there were too many accidents with pe… ped… walkers.”

She nodded to the bench. Karina tugged Jewel’s hand as she sat down. “Sit. It is okay, really. I got us food.”

Jewel stood there bewildered , and registered very little of what she said. The tug on her arm snaped her out if it. She sighed as she settled into the bench very close to Karina.

“Im sorry” she said again remembering that Karina liked direct. “I just really wanted today to be perfect, your so amazing and I really like you, and I don’t want to scare your off. I wanted to make a good impression and then im late, and ” she caught herself rambling. “I really like you” she said taking the food. “Im starving” she unwrapped her food.

“Jewel,” Karina set a hand over hers and waited for her to look at her. “Please do not apologize. I like you very much.” Karine tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “You made a wonderful impression, and,” she lifted her cup with a grin, “you brought me coffee.”

She laid her head briefly on Karina’s shoulder. “I babble when I get nervious” she sighed

Karina set a hand over hers. “That’s alright. I will listen while you babble, any time.”

She unwrapped her own food. “I hope it is alright. Our culinary students have a food truck.”

“Mif Iv to good” she mumble through her chewing. “Sorry” she said putting her hand to her mouth. “So you cant communicate telepathically with a non trlepath, can you go one way?” She asked, her curiosity getting the better of her.

Karina shook her head. “No. That is why we need vocal enhancers. Without them we have no way to communicate with non-telepaths. We can hear them speak, but we can not make them hear our thoughts.” It was lonely sometimes. Having the world be so quiet, but after years, Karina was mostly adjusted.

She squeezed Karina’s hand, “That’s too bad, I think it would be beautiful to hear you in your own language. ”

Karina smiled wistfully. “I wish that I could. It is not really… language as you are used to. We speak in pictures.”

She looked at her, “hmm, that would be interesting” she noted “oh well it was just a thought” she said.

“Do you teach still” she asked “Im not sure what you actually do” she said taking another bite.

Karina shook her head with a sigh. “Not anymore. When I first came to Oed I filled in where needed. But then we started the university. There is no time now.”

Jewel squeezed her hand tightly.

Her gaze slid over the lawn and the people coming and going. Groups of students talking, hurrying, eating, studying in the sunshine. “I run the entire Education system on Oed. From the university all the way down to the preschools. Half my time I am here, the other half at my office at the government tower. And my other time at the other schools.”

“I hope that soon I can give the daily running of the university to a president. But it is still too young yet.”

“Oh preschools, that must be fun, I love it when we get to go to the schools and talk to the kids” she noted. “I get to be all serious,” she said pouting her lips “and tell them about what we do to keep everyone safe. They are so curious and have some of the craziest questions. I mean like do you date other cops, or do you use your hand cuffs for fun,” she said winking “how fast can you drive, what’s the worst thing you ever seen, do you date other cops, your strong do you work out. ” she stopped sudenly and blushed taking a bite of her food. “Sorry”

“I would like to know those answers too,” Karina said. “But first, why are you sorry?”

She blushed and srugged “everyone i have dated said I talked to much” she noted . ” its habit, and yes I play with my hand cuffs” she said mustering the most serious look she could. Then nocked her with her shoulder to shoulder laughing.

“I do not think so. Perhaps they were…self centered. They wanted to spot light themselves instead of knowing you. Their loss.” Karina winked at her. “I like your voice. Please keep talking.” She filed away that answer for later.

She blushed , this cant be real shes soo understanding and she thought.”maybe , I feel like im in a dream, ” she said ” i mean your just so, I cant seem to find my footing” she was looking down now ,”im afraid im going to wake up, and I dont want to”

Karina had a moment of her own anxiety. “Have I been too … forward?” She tended to be, and it bothered people. She liked Jewel. She was easy to be around. If nothing else she would like to be her friend, though she was hopeful for more. She would have to dial herself back some. “Have I made you un - com - for - table?”

no no no she thought.. ” no please , no dont think that ” she said a little panic in her voice, “its the opposite , you make me feel so special and comfortable, its like I’ve known you forever , it feels like a dream and im afraid that ill wake up and it won’t be real, you said you liked direct so im being direct and it scares me cause im afraid im going to say something or do sometying and your gonna leave or I dont know , not like me for some reason, and im so excited for out date tonight that I might pee myself, and then I think im comming on to strong and I need to make you chase me. I” she stopped and looked at her panic all over her face.

Karina let her ramble. She new that sometimes listening helped nervousness more than anything. When Jewel quieted Karina set a hand on her cheeks. “Oh Jewel, no. You are wonderful.” She dropped her hands to to hold Jewel’s. “You do not need to be direct and blunt. That is me. Never do somethi g that scares you. You be you. I want to know you, the way you are. Please. Rambling or quiet.” She spoke slowly making sure each word came out correctly.

Jewel’s body relaxed considerably, “No I like the direct part, I don’t have time to tiptoe around everything, it’s just it all seems to perfect” she said as she leaned into cheek softly into her hand, nuzzling it a sigh escaping her lips. “Being direct is me, i’m just not used to it being ok,” she said interlocking her fingers with Karina’s

“I am very excited for tonight. And,” she gave Jewel a hot glare, “I am quite happy to chase you if you wish Beautiful Gem.”

Jewel batted her long black lashes, a coy smile crossing her face, “Why Ms. Enger,” she said playfully. “Whatever do you mean?” she said playfully her food now gone. She then turned more serious. “What should I wear? outdoor, indoor, Formal, semi formal, relaxed. Will there be activities? , I mean I have so many options for you, I’ll need some information. I mean I would hate for you to get to the door and I’m in a cut out tube top and mini skirt for dancing, and we are going to a five star restaurant” she asked? or did she state. Her eyes glimmered with excitement.

Karina smiled. “You shall see what I mean tonight.” She dropped her hand and took a sip of her Raktajino with a moan. “Mmm the idea of you in a tube top and mini skirt is… delightful. For tonight wear something comfortable and comfortable shoes. We will be out.”

She squeaked with joy at the information, her eyes narrowed a little slyly trying to fish, “So, comfortable yoga pants, or comfortable sundress?” she asked tugging excitedly on her hand. “I need more information, I want you worshiping me with your eyes all night” she said leaning her chin on her shoulder and batting here eyes frantically. “Please!!!!”

Karina’s gaze was riveted to her Jewel. She was… almost delicate. Karina liked it - a lot. “Hmmm well not work out clothes comfortable. I would love you in a sun dress I think. I do not know if you will be… happy with a sundress and our activity. You might, but I do not know you well enough yet. I will not be wearing a dress. Not this time.”

She squinted as if deep in thought, “hmm you in a dress sounds nice I can’t wait for that date,” she said indicating that there would be more than just the one. “You have to give me more, I mean, if we are going on a long walk through a park than sneakers and a sundress, if we are hiking somewhere then maybe boots and jeans, something common Karina, a girl needs details, you have to give me something to work with.” she said
