Najma was nervous but she walked up to the receptionist’s desk in the most calm and confident stride she could manage. When she reached the desk, her face was fixed with a firm expression, exuding a calm authority.
“Good afternoon, I am Najma Moreino, a reporter here for an audience with the Governor or Lieutenant Governor,” she declared, as she focused internally to keep her voice steady and assured. The anxious flutter in her stomach was overpowered by her resolve as she introduced herself.
The lobby buzzed with the sounds of government workers in motion, but Najma did not let it distract her. “I require only a brief moment. My goal is to conduct a short interview for my podcast, which addresses the significant events unfolding in our colony,” she stated.
“My podcast serves the people of Oed, offering genuine and insightful coverage....not the sensationalism found in typical media.”
Najma met the receptionist’s gaze, “I trust that the leadership of Oed will see the value in granting a rising journalist such as myself a few minutes of their time.”

The receptionist gave Moreino a friendly smile. “I’m afraid the Lieutenant Governor is off for the next week. I’m not sure of the Governor is available given how busy things are right now, but I can check with his assistant. Did you want to book an appointment if he is not?”

Najma blinked, her poised expression faltering for just a moment as she processed the receptionist’s words. “Book an appointment?” she echoed, her voice filled with surprise. The idea that gaining access to the Governors might be as straightforward as scheduling a meeting seemed almost surreal to her. She had braced herself for a more challenging task, perhaps a wait of weeks or even months for a brief audience, or a need to navigate through layers of bureaucratic gatekeepers.

She cleared her throat and said, “Yes, yes, I would like to book an appointment,” her tone adjusting quickly back to one of professional composure. She watched the receptionist for any signs of annoyance or impatience, but the woman seemed courteous and efficient.

As Najma waited to hear the available times, her curiosity got the best of her. She leaned slightly forward. “Can you tell me what the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor are like?” she asked, her voice softening. “I’ve heard so many things, but it’s different hearing it from someone who works closely with them and I am sure see them almost everyday.”
