Karilan looked at her with mock shock. “What? Are you suggesting that your own daughter is keeping secrets from you? Why, Eela Dasca, how could you?” and they stabbed a vegetable and popped it in their mouth with a grin and mischievous twinkle in their eye.

Eela snorted. “She only gets away with it because I’m not an outright telepath.”
“Thank the Gods for that,” Caridee deadpanned, with her own lit up eyes.
Eela just shook her head and looked at Karilan. “I’m doomed, that’s all there is to it. Between you, Caridee, Roger, Kenzo and probably everyone else, I’ll be dealing with all your nonsense.” But she was entirely joking and in fact there was warmth to her voice and she exuded affection. The levity was nice right now.
“We love you too,” Dee said with a grin.
Eela responded by popping a bite in her mouth, holding back a smirk and then looked at Karilan. “Thank you for cooking, Love. I may not be hungry, but it is lovely.”
Karilan’s face flushed at Eela’s use of the endearment, and she smiled broadly. “My pleasure. And until you are back to a hundred percent, just expect me to be here to make sure you eat.”
“Ahhh! So you’re taking over for Cort then, are you? I’m sure he’ll be thrilled someone else can be the mother hen for awhile,” Eela said with a chuckle.
They continued eating and after about ten minutes, when Dee noticed that her mother was only barely picking at her food, she rose from the table. She grabbed the med kit and pulled out the tricorder. “Just carry on. I want to see where we’re at before I go.”
Karilan leaned over to look at the readings. They weren’t a doctor by any means, but they understood the mechanics and chemistry of bodies.
“Well?” her mother asked, twirling her fork.
Caridee bobbed her head. “Still moving towards baseline, but taking its sweet time. Definitely take your muscle relaxant and just know that in the morning you might still feel unbalanced.”
Eela nodded and sighed. “Jal’na will be by at 0600. Going to have to set an alarm, but thankfully, I’ll be up at pretty normal time for me.”

“I wake up at 0400 every day, no alarm needed.” Karilan said. “I will make sure you are ready. Don’t you worry.” They finished their food and then looked at Eela, then her bowl, then pointed her fork at Eela’s bowl. “You have ten minutes to eat half of what is left or I am calling Dr. Fayth and telling her that you refuse to eat.”
Karilan
Eela had eaten maybe a third and given she hadn’t had much in the way of solid food today, she should be hungry. She was not. Instead, her stomach felt off and on queasy and in this moment it most definitely had nothing to do with the food itself. “I’m not refusing. I have eaten,” she said quietly.
“It might be easier tomorrow,” Caridee suggested, her hand coming to rest on Eela’s shoulder.
“Probably,” Eela said, breathing through the spurt of pain that was both her own and not. It was all mixed up in her consciousness and all she wanted was to reverse time. She stuck her fork into the rice and scooped a little, but could only stare at it as her stomach twisted. She shook her head and set the fork down. “Complain to Sharah if you need to,” she said to Karilan. “You can tell I’ll try to make up for it tomorrow. Maybe Jal’na’s help will ease some of this.” She dearly hoped so, that was for certain.
“Try small things more frequently. A couple crackers or something before bed might help tonight, especially with the medication.” Caridee lifted her bowl and ate the last few bites standing and then collected Karilan’s empty bowl and took everything over to the sink. “I should get downstairs and see how Kian fared today.”
“Give him my love, and kiss my granddaugher,” Eeela said, breaking into a fond smile.
“I will. Did you want me to bring Alais by for a little bit around breakfast time?”
“Oh, yes please! Even just a few minutes will be nice before I head off.” There was something special about time with the baby that was so different than when Caridee and Jourin had been that small and it was so delightful.
Caridee smiled. “She loves any time with you.” Moving over she held out a hand and Eela took it, feeling their connection, their love. Caridee squeezed her hand and and pumped it once, not a shake, but an affirmation. “This is real. I know your mind doesn’t know the difference between it all yet, but it will. Give it time and keep connecting. It will get better and until then we are all here with you.”
Eela nodded. “Thank you for everything.”
Those blue eyes, so like Cory’s gazed at her and smiled. “I’m just glad I was here. Now, I have reset the alert on your monitor, so only a really serous shift will ping me. But if there is anything either of you are concerned about, call me.” She looked at Karilan. “My contact is quick coded into her comm. We’re staying in apartment 208.”
“I’ll let myself out, but you two have a good night. I’ll see you in the morning,” Caridee said as she gathered her things and headed for the door.
Eela sat at the table and gazed out the floor-to-ceiling windows onto her patio. It was night, and Oed was coming alive in a different way, a mirror of when she left her place this morning. She drew in a breath and it slipped out of her mouth in a shudder.
