She bobbed her head. “Yes and no. Nothing so strong as hate mail, but you have to remember that Dash and I are it as far as staff. We weren’t sure what would happen with the Vren and if the embassy was even going to happen. So there are no other staff except for the security details. We’ve been in the process of hiring for the embassy and that was going to be a focus this week. So most things went through Dash and he told me if there were any negative messages. Everything was sent to my head of security, but nothing was ever flagged as a concern to follow up on. People were angry when we first arrived, and even my son faced issues at school, but it came down to people who themselves or their families had experienced the Vren attacks. They’re scared, Detective, and I and dash were the obvious source of this because we brought the Vren to Oed.” Jeannette shrugged. “We expected as much when we were brought into the situation, and it’s not the first time we’ve faced opposition.”
Pangolin nodded, the police was aware of some of those issues as they were cc’d on any potential threats but asking the question always gave more insight and confirmation was more important than making dangerous assumptions. Assumptions kill a Major back in the day had always told him.
She tapped her fingers on her thigh for a moment before she spoke again. “If there was anything from anyone that Dash received that was that serious, he never said anything to me, which would be an unusual situation. We’re very open with each other. The only situation that is unrelated to work that I know of is an old friend he met with a few days ago. He described it as a tense lunch that drew some attention when voices were raised, but this friend was wanting his help, not a conflict. It was sorted out and everything seemed fine after that.”

The detective nodded again, still making notes “Do you know who this friend was or where this lunch took place?” He asked
Commissioner Karlson
“I don’t know the place, no, but I do know his friend’s name is Rafael Torres. They knew each other when they were kids on Ajilon Prime. Mr. Torres works at Quill & Parchment cafe and bookshop now here on Oed. That’s what Dash was able to help with, loosely. It was through a friend of a friend.” As far as she knew the second friend in that scenario had nothing to do with the whole thing so it wasn’t relevant.

Pangolin nodded slowly as he noted both the name and place in his little book “Are you familiar with Mr. Torres?” He asked
Commissioner Karlson
This was where things go a bit tricky, as far as Jeanette was concerned. She would absolutely say the truth, but not all of it was hers to share and she wasn’t sure if she could legally. “I know of him. Just from what Dash told me. They both had difficult childhoods, but as adults had limited contact.”

Pangolin leaned in, his expression was the same but somehow it displayed a more forceful manner “How so?” he asked the open-worded question, either she would give more information than intended or open up a new avenue of questioning.
Commissioner Karlson
Jeannette, like most ambassador’s, had an impeccable ability to hide their emotions… usually. But right now, she was exhausted (she still hadn’t slept since her panicked waking in the early hours) and everything felt too intense. She shook her head and looked at Ren.
Ren, for their part, held empathy in their expression and nodded. “It’s okay, Jean, I don’t think he’d mind. Not under the circumstances.”
She rose to her feet, moving away from the couch into the open space behind, arms folded across her chest as she paced. “It’s not fair to his memory,” Jean said tersely.
“He’s more than some past mistakes, Love.”
Jeanette spun. “We know that, but do you really think the public will care? You don’t think they’ll just fixate on the salacious details?”
“No, I don’t. Or I truly hope not,” Ren said softly before shifting their gaze back to Pangolin. “You’ll have to forgive us, Detective. This is a sensitive topic, and my wife is nothing if not discreet. She would never share something that wasn’t hers to share. In this case, the information isn’t legally available to you, so we’re in a quandry. Would it help the case? Perhaps. Perhaps not. And if not, then we run the risk that if it becomes public, the perception of Dash becomes marred, and he was a good man who served the Federation with honour for years. Perhaps it’s enough to say that Dash wasn’t perfect and he made mistakes when he was younger and made up for them as an adult? Whatever debt to society he owed, it’s been well paid decades ago. Dash’s friend, Rafael, made mistakes too, but his journey was less… smooth.”
