She sighed and looked out the windows, noting the sky had dimmed. How much time had passed? Had it really been most of the day already? But she still felt exhausted, like a wet rag that had been wrung out.

“I need to get up,” Eela said.

“Okay,” Caridee replied, moving back to the other side of the bed. “You just need to be careful,” she said, holding out a hand to help. “Are you hungry at all?”

Eela shook her head. “Not really.” Never mind the fact that she really hadn’t eaten much since Kenzo’s omelet this morning. Taking Caridee’s hand, Eela pulled herself to her feet, mindful that she wasn’t wearing her brace right now. She was still dressed for the day and everything felt so… off. But standing on her own two feet, she could take a deeper breath. “I don’t know what to do, where to go right now. A part of me feels like I should go back to my place and sleep and see what tomorrow brings. Goodness knows there’s going to be enough continuing chaos.”

Caridee scrutinized her mother. “Regardless of what you decide, I don’t want you alone. I don’t necessarily have to be there on hand, but I do want to be able to monitor your condition and I want someone there if anything is off. Your manifestation of Kuskaaritz is rare enough that I don’t want to take any chances.”

“Well at least I keep things interesting,” Eela deadpanned.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Karilan spoke up without hesitation. “I can stay with you. Nothing really going on at the shop for another few days. I’ll go home, pack a few things, and meet you at your place. That work?”

Karilan Massat

Eela turned and gazed at Karilan and smiled. “Okay, that works for me.”

Caridee nodded slowly. “Okay, that’s settled then. And I’ll be down on the second floor if you need anything or the monitor alerts me, though the threshold will be a little less sensitive.” She didn’t need to race up there every time her mother’s heart rate spiked. There were bound to be trauma responses popping up and they would just need to work through them. “But I will warn you that while I was there earlier, I did run into your housekeeper, Sinna. I didn’t give any details but I did ask her to leave your bedroom as is. It’s one of those things that could be a trigger, or be harder to come back to and find no traces left that you might need right now. BUt I wanted to leave that to you to decide. If you find it too much, we’ll sort everything out then.”

Eela nodded, sucking in a breath. Yes, seeing the evidence of her night with Dash was going to be hard, but once again she was torn between not wanting the constant reminder, and not wanting to let him go. Not yet. She sat back down on the edge of the bed and flexed her feet, stretching them out and rolling her ankles. “Now, if you two don’t mind, I need a word with the Governor before I go.”

Caridee nodded and slipped out, moving downstairs to gather some of the items she had brought with her. The rest she would grab when her mother was done. She waited for Karilan to appear though and moved over before they left. “I’ll set up an alert that if at anytime tonight you need me, I can respond quickly. But once we get her settled back at her place I think she could use a break from me hovering,” she said with a knowing smirk. “I’ll leave you a few notes and instructions. Things to keep an eye out for, but honestly, we’re just going to have to play it by ear.”

~Eela & Caridee

Karilan nodded and said “That we can do, certainly. I’m going to go pack a bag and I will be at Eela’s place in twenty minutes.” They reached out and touched Caridee’s arm. “You did an amazing job here. Thank you for helping her.” They squeezed her arm and then turned and walked out of the apartment.

Caridee blew out a breath, nodding more to herself than anything.

Once the two had left, Kenzo looked at Eela and said “No. You are not allowed to go to your office.” flatly. It wasn’t often Kenzo B’tren-Hyrushi made a joke.

Hyrushi

Karilan

Eela smirked. “What? I can’t go write reports, maybe give an interview with the press?” She shook her head. “I was thinking about tomorrow, and I honestly have no idea how I’ll be. I do want to drop in and see Jeannette and the rest of the Mathises, and I will touch base with Cort one way or another, but I honestly intend to keep a very low profile. I just don’t want you to feel like this is all on you to deal with. I know…” She paused and frowned slightly, her inner thoughts trying to stay focused on the present and not the past twelve or eighteen hours or however long it had been. When she focused though, Eela could still feel that tangible thread of energy connecting them, though it was a bit fainter than before. “I know this morning has been a lot, and I maybe don’t need to say it but this isn’t all on you. We’re still in this together.” She reached out a hand.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

Kenzo looked at the hand as if contemplating it, and then took it. He looked at her and said “I am aware that we are still in this together. I am also aware that sometimes, when ‘in it’ with someone, it becomes necessary to shoulder the load for both parties… even if just for a moment. Such as now. You are much better, yes. But you are still not where you need to be to deal with all of this. So, for now, let me support you… and our partnership. Alright?”

Hyrushi, Governor

She very gently squeezed his hand. Eela wasn’t sure what she wanted to say, where the compulsion lay in this action. She wasn’t letting her mind connect either- she didn’t need to. She wasn’t trying to read thoughts, but for a moment she just recognized that thread was still there. Eela nodded. “I trust you.” It wasn’t even necessary. After all, she had put her life in his hands, quite literally. And this wasn’t about gratitude either. He already knew. “Next week I promise I’ll aim for dull.”

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

“Next week it’s my turn for drama. I’m thinking of a cross between newly discovered love-child and a global pandemic.” he said flatly. He squeezed her hand back and then let go. “Now… please get yourself together and get out of my house.” he said with a flat expression… but a warm glow in his obsidian eyes.

Hyrushi, Governor

“It’s just as well, I have a nice big bathtub at my place,” Eela said as she carefully shifted forward to her feet. She was going to have to call Jal’na- her body was sore. “And I look forward to seeing your drama. I just advise you don’t try too hard to outdo me. It tends to not go so well.” She smirked.

“And… later, we will talk more.” They both knew it was necessary on many levels. There was so much to say and right now was a terrible time. Eela felt certain they both needed a little time to sort things out before they walked through today’s events together.

She moved to gather the items left in the room and put them in the bag that Caridee had brought over. As she moved to the canar, she eyed it and sighed. It was too much to deal with right now and she would have to process the complicated feelings accompanying the device later. She slipped it back into its velvet bag and set it in the duffle.

Caridee reappeared and helped, taking the bag from Eela so she didn’t have to carry it down the stairs. Eela’s stiff movement seemed cautious and she didn’t blame her. She’d been through a lot and her body was still processing sensory memories that were not her own but were going to be hard to separate.

Downstairs, Eela retrieved her coat and slipped her boots back on. She turned to Kenzo, giving him a long look before she simply gave a small nod and headed for the door.
