Darae had heard the news after the emergency cabinet meeting let out, but it was one of those things that you simply held on to unless told otherwise. But a short while ago, the Governor has told them to go ahead with a press conference. It was time to let Oed know about Dashiel Jones. Darae blew out a breath as she finished jotting down a few notes, just so she wasn’t going entirely off the cuff, but there was little information to be had at this time. At least from her end.

She reached out to the Police Commissioner and gave him the info about the press conference, inviting him to conduct it with her if he felt he could be of assistance. He was likely busy with it all, but right now his department had the most information and could probably answer more questions than she could.

Shortly before the appointed time, people began gathering in the Press Room. On the 18th Floor, it was on the same level as Media Relations, where reporters could go to get authenticated to be credentialed press on Oed. While anyone could ‘report’ on Oed, credentials got you into places like the Government Tower’s Press Room for any and all official press conferences.

A notification that a press conference had been scheduled went out an hour ago to all credentialed members of the Oed’s Press. An assistant stepped into the room to make sure the podium and mics were ready.

Joseph arrived fifteen minutes before he needed to as was his way. His assistant had already informed the staff that he would be attending. Today he was wearing a fully black suit and waistcoat with an ebony cane. The Oed columnists liked to refer to the suit as his Business Serious outfit, he wore it during press conferences of a more serious nature such as when answering questions regarding the Riot or during the murder investigation of Prim Zar.

Tovar Michaels strode into the press conference room, his media pass proudly displayed on his lapel, and a satchel-style bag slung under his arm. Despite his youth in the realm of media affairs, he had recently graduated from the prestigious Federation Media Bureau Academy on New New England. The upcoming event marked his inaugural assignment on OED, a moment he had eagerly anticipated. While his role granted him the privilege of attending such conferences, Tovar knew the importance of thorough preparation. With his network of contacts unexpectedly silent, he had meticulously constructed a hierarchical diagram outlining potential leads, each accompanied by a series of probing questions on his PaDD. Attached to it was a Speech-to-Text device, ready to capture every insight during the conference.

The red-headed Deputy Chief moved over to Karlson in the anteroom. “Commissioner,” she said, her sober tone matching her expression. “I doubt this will take long, but we should make sure we’re on the same page before we step out. I will give the new in very simple terms without details because it is an ongoing investigation, but I will also let them know that Vren contingent is aware. Any details that are shared beyond that I will leave to you. Does that sound correct and fair?” She knew the press would likely have many more questions for him than her, but those questions were likely to be ones he could not answer.

~Kasiri Darae, Deputy Chief of Staff

Joseph nodded “Sounds good” He leaned in “In case we need it send a ping if you want the conference to end at any time, same for me if you’d like to end it for any reason” It was just a way to make sure that things didn’t go out of hand “I’m ready whenever you are.”

Kasiri nodded. “Agreed. Let’s get this over with.” This was one of those situations that one never wanted to have to deal with. It wasn’t just the death of a person of note, it was someone intimately involved with one of the most historic happenings in Oed’s recent history, and the magnitude of it all reached far beyond their planetary system. An entire society was at stake.

Najma stood outside the imposing doors of Oed’s Government Tower. The notification of the impending press conference had set the wheels of her reporter’s mind spinning, eager to uncover the truth behind the enigmatic Dashiel Jones. This was the first big story she’d come across on OED.

As she approached the Media Relations desk on the 18th Floor, Najma flashed her identification badge, her fixed on the clerk behind the desk as she awaited confirmation of her credentials.
After her credentials were scrutinizeand approved, Najma entered the bustling Press Room, her senses heightened by the energy of anticipation crackling in the air. She scanned the room, her eyes noting the presence of fellow reporters, each poised with their own agenda waiting just like her to gather as much information from the press conference they could.

Joseph sat down and examined the room, he got a few nods from those reporters he was familiar with. The Crime correspondence of the ONN and FNN were usually present when he was there, he also saw members from different local news networks and some faces he was unfamiliar with. He was already mentally preparing himself to be annoyed.

Darae moved to the podium, her expression neutral and professional. Her posture was straight and while she had given smaller and less important news to share, and many of the press corps knew who she was, Kasiri was not someone in the spotlight. She was always just to the side of it.

“Thank you all for coming on such short notice,” she said. Kasiri almost cracked a joke about Oed not caring about news schedules, but this was not the time. “For those of you that don’t know me, I am Karisi Darae, Deputy Chief of Staff here in the Government Tower. And it is with great sadness that I am before you today on behalf of Oed Five’s government to share that this morning, Mr. Dashiel Jones, Attaché to Federation Ambasador Jeannette Mathis, was found dead in his home.”

She paused briefly at the expected and ensuing noise that erupted, but held up a hand so she could continue. “Oed Police are investigating the situation and are being supported by other agencies, including Starfleet Security. It is an ongoing investigation, so I don’t have details to share, other than to say that Mr. Jones’ family has been notified and so have our Vren guests, whom have expressed their deep condolences. I also have been told that Ambassador Kek and Ambassador Mathis are in agreement that talks will continue as soon as it is appropriate to do so.”

Kasiri let out a sigh and gestured to the room. “Alright, questions?”

~Kasiri Darae, Deputy Chief of Staff

Tovar raised his hand waiting for the invitation to speak.

“Thank you, Deputy Chief. Given that this warrants an investigation, does it imply his death is being treated as suspicious?” As he spoke, he subtly adjusted his posture, raising his PaDD and dictaphone a notch, signaling his intent to capture every detail of the response.

“At this time, yes,” she said with a nod. She gestured to Karlson to join her. “Further questions about that will be handled by Police Commissioner Karlson.” She remained at the podium, but stepped to one side so they could both take questions as they came up.

Joseph looked at the panel in front of him, checking who it was that spoke “This investigation is led by Detective Chief Inspector Pangolin of the Major Crimes Division” Pangolin was known to be the Commissioner’s most trusted Investigator, the MCD was formed to allow Pangolin to take any case deemed important enough and was designed in a way that allowed for Joint operations with any of the other criminal investigative groups on the Colony “We are currently treating the Investigation into Mr Jones’ death as a Homicide”

Commissioner Karlson

Najma’s mind raced as she absorbed the information being shared in the press conference. Dashiel Jones, dead? And potentially murdered? The implications of such a high-profile figure’s death sent a chill down her spine. Her reporter instincts kicked into overdrive as she mentally cataloged questions to ask and angles to explore.

As the press conference continued, Najma observed the interactions between the reporters and the officials on the panel. Tovar Michaels’ question about the suspicious nature of Dashiel Jones’ death alerted her. She made a mental note to follow up on any updates regarding the investigation led by Detective Chief Inspector Pangolin.

But Najma also noticed something else amidst the chaos of the press conference. The subtle cues exchanged between Deputy Chief of Staff Kasiri Darae and Police Commissioner Karlson hinted at a deeper level of collaboration and perhaps a shared history. Najma’s curiosity piqued. Could there be more to this story than meets the eye?

A young woman by the name of Della Kalgren spoke up. “Commissioner, do you have any suspects at this time?”

~Press Corps Reporter

“I won’t be discussing details of the investigation at this time” He said, his tone polite but firm which was his usual stance with the press “In any investigation of this nature there are no shortages of suspects but we won’t reveal any further information” He pointed to the next raised hand “Yes?” He gave the next reporter a chance to ask a question

Commissioner Karlson

Tovar rose to his feet once more, his voice projecting with a sense of urgency. “In light of recent events, with OED experiencing unprecedented challenges—welcoming new guests and now facing this tragic incident—concerns have arisen regarding potential security risks. Commissioner, could you shed some light on the measures the government is taking to ensure the safety of other high-profile individuals?”

As he awaited a response, Tovar’s gaze remained fixed on Commissioner Karlson, his expression a blend of curiosity and concern. “Additionally, considering the gravity of the situation, it’s reasonable to assume that Starfleet Security is involved. Could you provide insight into the specific role and support they are offering in the ongoing investigation?”
