As the day drew on, Cort, Dorma, Sherri and Elema continued to navigate the chaos from their Government Tower meeting room bunker.

Cort hung up yet another call looking to speak to the Lieutenant Governor, having explained that she would not be available for the next day or so. It should have been obvious, but he couldn’t blame them for trying. As he looked over at Dorma, he knew she was dealing with much of the same. It had been a long, long day and he has lost track of what time it even was.

When Elema gasped softly from across the table, Cort sat up straight in his seat. “What’s up?”

Sreer seemed overcome by emotion. “Umm… I just received a message from my partner Dalla, and it seems that once the public found out about Jones they have set up a vigil outside his building.”

Cort was speechless for a moment before he realized how touched he was at the gesture. He was still wrapping his mind around the fact that Dash was dead in the first place, let alone how it was affecting everyone, including himself. “Huh,” he said. “I kind of want to go and check it out. Anyone want to come with me? I want to say, once we’re done here for the day, but I’m not sure this day will actually end.” It wasn’t just Dash on his mind either. He was worried about Eela and her state. He was glad she had given Dorma an update, but he knew that the last thing she had needed on top of dealing with the death of someone she cared deeply about was a health crisis. It was taking everything he had not to pester her for updates. She would contact him when she was ready.

Cort Belanger, Executive Assistant to Lt. Gov.

Dorma cursed under her breath. “Well shit… did not see that coming.” She was in full admin mode and was pulling personnel and adjusting schedules and fielding requests and generally trying just not to scream. She took a breath and looked at everyone in the room. “Sorry. Yes, it is very touching the people would do such a thing. I’m just worried it will become a spectacle.” She looked at Cort and said “Yes. I want to come. But before we go, let me talk to the police and some media contacts and make sure this doesn’t turn into some kind of platform for those looking to stir the pot. I’ve already had six calls on how his death is somehow linked to a prophecy about a revolution between the different Xindi factions. I would prefer the tin foil hats stay as far away as possible.” and she began tapping on the PaDD in front of her.

Cort studied Dorma for a long moment and knew he wasn’t the only one struggling to just manage everything today. He drew closer, his demeanour calm, despite the intense stress they were all under. “What can I do?” he asked her.

Sherri pushed herself to her feet, brushing an errant lock of wavy brown hair that had slipped out of its bun. “I’d love to join you but I really need to get home before I pass out.”

“It’s been a long day for everyone,” Sreer said with a nod. She gazed long and hard at her colleague and frowned. “Are you okay?”

Watts waved her off. “I’m fine. Just a little off today.”

“Okay,” Sreer said, though she wasn’t convinced. She did return to Dasca’s inbox which had had a non-stop flurry of messages since the press conference.

Dorma looked at Cort and gave him a tired smile. “Nothing, but thanks. Just give me twenty minutes, alright?” and she looked at Watts. “Stop by the clinic before you leave and have them run a scan. I’m not asking, Sherri.” The fact that Dorma called her by her first name was testament to her seriousness. She then looked at Elema and said “Hey, can you go with her? I’ll wait till you come back, okay?”

Dorma Fen

Cort nodded at the twenty minutes. He had a couple more things he could tackle before he left and that would make things that much easier in the morning. Though who was he kidding, the next while was going to be more of a circus than it had bene already the last month.

Heat touched Sherri’s cheeks and she drew in a deep breath. “I… don’t need to see the clinic. I’m not ill,” she said, her blossoming with a smile.

Elema stared at her friend and then her eyes went wide. “Are you? Really?” she asked.

Watts nodded eagerly and looked to Cort and Dorma. “So, I wasn’t going to say anything for a few more weeks, because it’s really early, but… I’m pregnant. And yes, Dasca knows. I told her just before the gala.” She wasn’t going to blame hormones on crying the night of the gala because that jackass admiral had been verbally abusive towards her, but they certainly hadn’t helped the situation.

“Ahh, Sher, that’s wonderful news,” Elema said, throwing her arms around Watts. It was a bit of levity on what had otherwise been a horrible and stressful day. And she knew that Sherri and her husband Gregg had been trying for awhile with no luck, so this was doubly-good news.

Sherri hugged her back fighting back a wash of emotions. “But just so you know, I’m fine. Just starting to feel the fatigue and some nausea, and as I told Dasca, it’s business as usual. But if I don’t go home soon, Gregg is going to come and drag me out of here, so I figure I will go visit the vigil later.” She looked at Dorma. “But I appreciate your concern.” It was one of those signs that the four of them really had bonded as a team.

Cort couldn’t stop grinning and moved over to Sherri to give his own hug. “Congratulations. I’m really happy for you and Gregg.”

Sherri grinned. “Thanks, Cort. I’m nervous and I’m trying to not get too excited just yet. But you are all my friends and I’m glad I get to share this with a few people.”
