From their first meeting in his office, to every cabinet meeting they had been in together, Eela Dasca had been alert, focused, and engaged. But the woman who appeared on the screen before him was worn, with dark circles under her eyes. She seemed to try to pull herself together, but the effort was minimal. She was in a room with what might be a headboard behind her and she was propped up with pillows. “Commissioner Karlson. I apologize that we have to meet like this, but the circumstances could not be helped.”
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.
“So I’ve been told” Joseph started, stifling the annoyance he felt at the situation, things were enough of a mess that he didn’t need to pile on unprofessionalism to the top of the pile “I’ll get straight to the point, no-nonsense” there would be no beating around the bush between them “I need to ask you questions regarding the murder of Dash Jones, they are going to be hard for you, some will be accusatory in nature and most all of them will be extremely personal in nature. I remind you that you have the right to both personal counsel and to have your Starfleet representative present during this interview and I recommend that you avail yourself of this right or at least record this conversation to be reviewed by your legal counsel at a later date. I also advise that you have support available for when we are done.” It wasn’t entirely out of kindness or respect that he made the reminder, that was part of it for sure but he also wanted to have all bases covered for this case, the lieutenant Governor would remain the top suspect for a good while and when this was all over it needed to be clear that she had been treated as such from the beginning, there was no room for scandal.
Commissioner Karlson
“I understand,” Eela said. “I don’t need counsel present, but this is being recorded and I have support where I am.” Lots of support. She reached out and Squeezed Karilan’s hand.
Joseph nodded but didn’t voice his disagreement, he had been on the other side of the interrogation chair on numerous occasions and he never did so without counsel present even if all they did was sit there and make little notes. He made a note to tell her so once she wasn’t a suspect anymore, or once she’d been arrested under suspicion of murder whichever came first.
She drew in a deep breath. “Ask your questions and I’ll answer as best I can. Just know that there is no one that wants answers about what happened to Dash more than I. The Mathises and Jones’ family are probably tied with me right now,” she said seriously, her eyes taking on a brief look of determination that she so often showed in cabinet meetings.

“When and where did you last see Mr Jones?” He asked, there was already a timeline but with forty-six minutes uncounted for they needed to fill in.
Commissioner Karlson
It was hard to push away the image of his smiling face, that grin and his oft unruly curls and Eela almost winced. She breathed through the moment and gathered her thoughts, reciting the timeline as she had to others and more than once in her own head. “He was at my place for a date last night. He came over for dinner and he left around 0200. He had a breakfast meeting schedule with Ambassador Mathis, otherwise he would have just stayed.” She dearly wish he had now. She wished for so many things.”

Joseph nodded, unlike his Chief Detective he didn’t take notes, he didn’t need to “Did he seem different the past few days, perhaps under more than the expected amounts of stress?” He asked.
Commissioner Karlson
Eela steadied her breath and nodded slowly. “I mean, our work is stressful enough but personal things can make it harder. You have to keep in mind that I’m an empath, Commissioner, but also a touch telepath. So while I didn’t pick up specific topics or anything like that, I knew that something was bothering him, something that wasn’t work related. I did ask him last night before dinner and he said that he didn’t want to ruin our evening and that he would tell me today. We were supposed to meet for lunch.” She blinked back tears. “I respect his privacy and if he wasn’t ready to share it just yet, I wasn’t going to push. But I did get the impression that he was worried about something that involved me somehow? Nothing concrete, but empathic impressions are never perfect and can lack context. And I didn’t find out anything else about it, even though…” She paused. He was right, this would be hard. It was one thing to confide this to her friends, to others with abilities similar to hers who could understand the importance, but sharing this with others was difficult at best. “Even though we were telepathically linked before he left. A link that does not dissipate for hours. But again, I respect privacy and I did not pry where I was not welcome.” Did he understand what she was telling him? Dasca gazed intently, looking for signs of understanding.
