From their first meeting in his office, to every cabinet meeting they had been in together, Eela Dasca had been alert, focused, and engaged. But the woman who appeared on the screen before him was worn, with dark circles under her eyes. She seemed to try to pull herself together, but the effort was minimal. She was in a room with what might be a headboard behind her and she was propped up with pillows. “Commissioner Karlson. I apologize that we have to meet like this, but the circumstances could not be helped.”

“So I’ve been told” Joseph started, stifling the annoyance he felt at the situation, things were enough of a mess that he didn’t need to pile on unprofessionalism to the top of the pile “I’ll get straight to the point, no-nonsense” there would be no beating around the bush between them “I need to ask you questions regarding the murder of Dash Jones, they are going to be hard for you, some will be accusatory in nature and most all of them will be extremely personal in nature. I remind you that you have the right to both personal counsel and to have your Starfleet representative present during this interview and I recommend that you avail yourself of this right or at least record this conversation to be reviewed by your legal counsel at a later date. I also advise that you have support available for when we are done.” It wasn’t entirely out of kindness or respect that he made the reminder, that was part of it for sure but he also wanted to have all bases covered for this case, the lieutenant Governor would remain the top suspect for a good while and when this was all over it needed to be clear that she had been treated as such from the beginning, there was no room for scandal.

“I understand,” Eela said. “I don’t need counsel present, but this is being recorded and I have support where I am.” Lots of support. She reached out and Squeezed Karilan’s hand.

She drew in a deep breath. “Ask your questions and I’ll answer as best I can. Just know that there is no one that wants answers about what happened to Dash more than I. The Mathises and Jones’ family are probably tied with me right now,” she said seriously, her eyes taking on a brief look of determination that she so often showed in cabinet meetings.
