She chuckled through their link. Aye, aye. Her cheek tingled with the impression of Karilan’s lips and it soothed something in her, something like an echo from their experiment with the canar. She turned her gaze and briefly looked at the device sitting on the dresser and she had a strange emotion float up through her: betrayal. Well that was interesting. Pushing it away, she kept her arm wrapped around Karilan, not wanting this moment to end.
It was this scene that Caridee returned to and a soft smile came to her lips. She didn’t want to disturb them, but it was necessary. She was almost going to knock when Eela lifted her head and turned her gaze on her daughter. “I spoke with Lieutenant Iven, he’s waiting for your call when you’re ready.”
Eela nodded. “The Police Commissioner needs to speak with me also. Elema is setting up a video call between us.”
“Okay,” Caridee said, sensing her mother’s resolve. “Just… be mindful that you’ve been through a lot this morning. Take breaks where you need to. Meanwhile, I’m going to go make some more tea. Would either of you like anything?”
“A herbal tea, if he has any?” Eela said, before turning to Karilan, hand still firmly in theirs. She would have to let go soon, but she was loathe to. “Anything for you?”
~Eela
Karilan smiled and said “I have everything I need right here.” and then they looked at Caridee and said “But I wouldn’t be averse to some coffee.” and they chuckled softly.
Karilan
“Tea and coffee I have.” came a familiar voice. Hyrushi stepped inside. He seemed his normal self, save for bandages on his hands and some peeking up out of his shirt collar. He looked at Eela and said “Welcome back. You were missed.” He glanced at Karilan and then back at Eela. “I will prepare the tea and coffee.” He looked at Caridee and said “If you would assist, I would appreciate it.” and he turned and walked out the door.
Hyrushi, Governor
As he left, there was a familiar brush of his mind from Eela, though not an intrusion. It was filled with gratitude but also a pensiveness. There was not time to talk… now. But later, oh there would be things to discuss. Though they both knew this.
Caridee smiled at Karilan and nodded at Hyrushi, following him down the stairs. “Dr. Fayth is still unconscious but closely monitored. How are you feeling?” she asked.
~Eela & Caridee
Hyrushi didn’t turn around, but said “Some pain, but that will pass I’m sure.” flatly as they walked down the stairs. He led her into the kitchen and said “Tea is in that cabinet. I will make coffee. Which do you prefer?”
Hyrushi
He wasn’t her patient and it wasn’t her place, but she could only hope that was true. “You know, it’s been a hell of a morning and I think I could use some coffee at this point myself.” Her mother wanting herbal tea over anything caffeinated spokes volumes to the distress she knew her mother was still experiencing. She could carry mugs upstairs but she doubted he really needed her help making the beverages, so she waited for instructions or to see if there was more he wanted to say.
~Caridee
Hyrushi took grounds and a an old Terran-style coffee maker called a ‘French Press’ and hot water and began making the coffee. “So tell me, Doctor… how do you feel about our attempt to help your mother? Do you believe it successful?” he asked flatly.
Hyrushi, Governor
Sevren drew in a deep breath. “Too well, I’m afraid. But I suppose that was to be expected. Yes, she feel emotions again and can share them. Her psi abilities are functional and I’ve seen her use them. That is all good. But…” It was hard for her, this place. Her mother had chosen her to be her medical proxy those years ago for a reason and it was clear her mother valued her input now as well, but for Caridee she was uncomfortable with the parallels. “None of you were there after her accident, when she was figuring out how to function again.” She planted her hands on the counter. “The thing about her brain injury that is still true even all these years later is that my mother can be subject to extremes. She’s worked very hard to level a lot of that out, but the fundamental shift in her brain function makes her more susceptible. The middle ground can be a difficult place for her to find, especially after something traumatic. That doesn’t mean that what she’s feeling and experiencing isn’t real. It is, but she can more easily be swayed toward extreme behaviour. And that can be fine, and I am only just getting a glimpse of what her work here really asks of her, but I could see at such a delicate time that it could be problematic. It’s going to take time and healing for her to be able to find balance, to resurrect her much stronger mental shields. She’ll be more… receptive to everything for a time. And now she’s grieving while also feeling intense pressure to do her job. I suppose my concern will be that she shoves it all down in order to function as Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief, and try to deal with it later, but in my experience, it will all have it’s say whether she wants it to or not.”
~Caridee
Hyrushi paused action while he waited for the coffee to steep. He was silent for a long time, looking out the glass wall overlooking the pool and garden. “I believe we may have a way to frame a middle ground for her and still allow for her to be productive and taking action.” He turned and began to slowly press the floating grounds down through the now dark coffee with the plunger. “I will task her with assisting Ambassador Mathis directly with the Vren. They know one another, and share feelings of deep attachment to Mr. Jones already; so that will give her a foundation and an understanding that none of us can give her. Additionally…” and he turned and looked at Caridee. “You will not repeat this to anyone, as it is highly classified and unknown to even most of those involved. The Vren are not psychic or empathic. In fact, they are the opposite. They have no readable energy in that arena of any kind… at least, as far as we can tell. Not even Docotor Fayth is able to read them. So… if Captain Dasca is surrounded by few individuals to give her input and even more that can’t… she should be less susceptible to being overwhelmed, yes?”
Hyrushi, Governor
Caridee nodded as she inhaled deeply. “I think so, yes. My mother has never been very good at sitting on the sidelines when there is work to be done. And this situation is vastly different than her accident. She’s not rebuilding her entire life this time, so I suspect that this state will be fairly short lived. Especially if she’s working with her therapist throughout.”
She debated whether to say anything more, unsure of what transpired through the canar connection and how much he would have been aware of. “When she… came back to us, that moment of breakthrough was rather intense as we expected. Karilan and I grounded her as best we could, but there was nothing we could do to stop her from experiencing what she had before. That included Dash’s death, Governor. My hypothesis was correct. I’ve never wanted to be wrong so much as in that moment, but regardless, there are things that might need to be done once things settle down a bit to help her with that physical experience. I will have that conversation about it with her, since we were going to do the ritual during Batarael anyway, but I will say that Batarael can’t come soon enough. It might seem contrary to have such a big celebration so soon after such a tragedy, but this holiday is about so much more than parties. Especially for her. If we can get her through till then, I think all the rituals involved will go a long ways towards longer term healing, not just from today, but other recent events as well.”
~Caridee
Hyrushi finished pressing the coffee and transfered the pot to a tray with mugs. “Then we get her through to the rituals.” he stated as if it were an indisputable fact. He turned and looked at her and gave a slightly sarcasticaly disapproving look. “You didn’t make the tea.” and he shook his head slightly and began to make a pot.
Hyrushi
A small snort of laughter erupted from the psychiatrist. “Sorry, distracted.” She moved around the counter to where she had seen he stored his tea. “What sort of herbal teas do you have? Something soothing would be best, and she’s quite partial to jestral.” Her mother often blended the Betazoid tea with other things, created her own remedies to soothe whatever mood she was in.
~Caridee
“Orange container with gold leaves. Green tea blend from Osaka.” Hyrushi directed as he heated water on the stove. “Never replicate hot water for tea. Somehow it just doesn’t taste the same.”
Hyrushi
She smiled as she reached for the aforementioned container. “Water is one of those interesting things that has such character. Every place it tastes different. It’s hard to replicate the nuances of minerals and how it interacts with the things we eat and drink.”
Caridee measured out the amount of tea needed for the pot. “There’s a beautiful ritual on Halii that involves a tea-like infusion where everyone adds their own herbs from a specific group of them and the resulting brew is shared amongst everyone. It’s a healing circle, and can be used for a variety of purposes, but it’s meant to bring about bonding and a deeper feeling of connection within the group. The healer I called earlier, my mentor, he had me participate in and witness many different rituals and processes that they use,” she said with the warm smile granted from a fond memory.
~Caridee
“Rituals are important.” Hyrushi said as he watched her make the tea. “It gives us a sense of belonging… a level of community and shared history. The problems arise when the act of ritual becomes more important than the meaning of it.”
Hyrushi, Governor
“I agree,” she said softly, as she finished up the tea and moved cups to the tray with the coffee. She would carry the teapot. “All I’ve known of Haliian rituals is what my mother taught us and practiced herself. It wasn’t until I went to Halii myself that I realized how many more there were, and when I asked her about them, she admitted that she used to practice a lot more when she was younger, especially with her parents.” Sevren sighed and shrugged. “A whole lot of examining the past has been going on for her and I lately.” An understatement. She was having to look really carefully at all the family dynamics and dissect it all piece by piece to uncover the truth. Some days it was not just disheartening, but devastating.
Careful with the hot tea pot, Caridee moved with him back up the stairs to her mother’s room. She wasn’t sure if he’d stay in the room to enjoy his tea, but she knew her mother would appreciate seeing that he was doing okay. Now they just had to wait and hope Sharah was okay. The longer she remained unconscious, the more concerned Caridee grew, but she knew that her knowledge of the situation was minimal.
~Caridee
Kenzo carried the drinks into the room and looked at Eela and Karilan. “Coffee and tea.” He said as he set the tray down. “Now if you will excuse me, there are fires burning that must be extinguished.” He looked at Eela and said “You will find some to rest and recuperate. That is not negotiable, Captain.” He looked at Karilan. “I am holding you responsible for her well-being, Massat.” He then looked at Caridee and said “Contact me directly if there is any assistance you require. And thank yiu for your work here today. It was more important than you may know.” And with that, he turned and walked out the door.

Sharah had woken many minutes ago. Ready to get up and go check on people. Yavia wouldn’t let her. Her relief that Sharah was awake was physical. There was absolutely no way she was going to let her get up yet. Not until she had thoroughly checked her, and held her in her arms for long minutes. But eventually her stubbornness wouldn’t let her rest, and Yavia reluctantly let her get up.
Yavia
Sharah wasn’t quite all there. She felt detached from herself. Like her body was living one existence and her soul another. Almost like they were communicating over a long distance. She was aware of the minds and emotions of everyone on Oed, she was separate but attached to them. She couldn’t seem to break free. She had to make sure they were okay. She knew Eela was. She’d felt it before she passed out. She could hear her speaking from down the hall. There was no panic or sorrow immediately around her. But Kenzo. She had to make sure. There had been a surprising intimacy in the connection they’d formed, and he’d risked a lot to help Eela.
Yavia wanted her to rest, but she couldn’t, not yet. Yavia walked with her, arm around her waist into the hall. She wasn’t quite present, not quite anchored in the physical, the contact helped. She saw Hyrushi step out of Eela’s room. “Kenzo?” She moved toward him, reaching a hand out to him, her eyes taking all of him in, the bandages, his expression, his posture.
Lt. Cmdr. Fayth, SFCMO
He turned and looked at her, giving her a half-bow. “Doctor Fayth. I am glad to see you awake. How are you feeling?”
Hyrushi, Governor
Sharah refrained from touching him, not wanting to intrude. She understood much better now the toil it took. “Slightly detached, a bit … lost. It will pass.” She thought so anyway. It was a new experience for her. “And you, Governor? How are you feeling?” It was no easy thing they did, and they both had their own sets of consequences.
Lt. Cmdr. Fayth, SFCMO
“As I informed the very insistent Nurse earlier, I will be fine in a few hours. The pain has subsided significantly.” he said, even though that was a lie. It was slowly receding, but he knew he would feel it long after the burns faded away over the next little while.
