“I have a mobile burn unit, but quite frankly it will take hours to treat the severity of the burns and a little at a time. It can only do small areas. I would like to take you to Sacred Heart and put you in the burn chamber. 40 minutes most and you’ll be finished.” She held a hand to prevent protest, “I do understand the need for privacy. I can arrange with Dr. Helaky to have you transported right to the chamber and back here afterwards. No one has to know you were there.” Ilena took a steady breath, “To be quite frank, Governor, you and Cpt Dasca can not both be down. Cpt Dasca is not fit to maintain her role as Lt Governor right now, though she is already trying to do so.”
Lt. Ilena Rox, Surgical Nurse
“I appreciate your dilligence, Lieutenant.” Hyrushi said as he stood up and looked around for his shirt. “But as I said, I will fine in a few hours. As if it never happened. Such is the nature of what transpired.” He found his shirt and slipped it on. There was no indication of pain as he did so, but he did move slightly gingerly as he pulled the shirt across the burned and bandaged areas. “And you are correct. Both the Lieutenant Governor and I cannot be incapacitated simultaneously, so therefore I will resume my duties. He finished buttoning his shirt and began walking to the door. “Please see to Commander Fayth. I will see to everyone else.” he said, and promptly walked out the door.
Hyrushi, Governor
In the other room, Eela’s attention shifted and she gazed at the open door and exhaled a sigh. “I can feel Kenzo again,” she said, and something in her eased. She was still deeply concerned about Sharah but there was nothing she could do but sit in bed. She looked over at Karilan, reached out, and took her friend’s hand, gazing intently as she observed the sensation on her skin. “There are inevitable things that are going to have to happen. It won’t be long before the police will be wanting to talk with me, and I desperately want to help them figure out what happened to Dash. But they are going to want to talk to anyone who has had contact with him. That includes you and Mr. Torres. If I could shield you both from having to deal with that at all, I would, but I can’t, I know that. But…” But what? “I hate feeling this helpless. Every cell in my body wants to do something.” And yet she was exhausted by the weight of everything she had experienced and was still processing. But she was feeling it all, and as hard as that was, it was a good thing.
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Governor
Karilan patted her hand. “Don’t even give that a second thought. Mr. Torres and I have already spoken at length about the issue at hand. If and when the authorities wish to speak to him or I, my attorney is waiting. But I can assure you… there is nothing he or I know that pertains to Mr. Jones’… um… tragedy.”
Karilan Massat
She should feel reassured, but right now she was not- or at least, not entirely.
A beep from her comm drew her attention and Eela knew it could be only one of a very select few people, given that access to her was being highly restricted at the moment. She reached over and drew in a deep breath, popping in the comm piece again and answering the call. “Hello Elema.... Mhmmm.... yes, I expected as much sometime today… obviously I can’t come in but I can take it over video if that will work for him. Otherwise he will have to wait…” She snorted. “I have no doubt, but given everything it’s the best I can do and I truly have no issues having the conversation… Okay… thank you. Talk to you later.”
Eela exhaled and gave Karilan a wan smile. “Speaking of police, a certain commissioner is needing to speak with me, which I expected and have no issues with. If anything, I’m eager to, if only because it might help everyone figure out what happened to Dash.” And she needed that knowledge right now. Would it help her process? Maybe, maybe not, but given what she had experienced, she felt convinced that if they could find all the pieces, something might make sense. Or maybe she was flooing herself, who knew?
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.
Karilan rose and said “Okay. Let’s get you dressed and we will go see him.” matter-of-factly. She looked around and found Eela’s clothes and began pulling things out and tossing them in the bed.
Karilan
She couldn’t help but smile at her dear friend. “A nicer shirt would be nice, since my daughter grabbed stuff for me apparently, but I’m just going to talk with Karlson over video. Elema is setting it up and I can use the PADD I have if we prop it up.” Something pricked in her mind as she watched Karilan and she understood that something had shifted since this whole thing began. The Karilan that had intervened at the Quill was not present. “But Karilan… first…” She carefully shifted herself over on the bed, patted the space beside her, and reached out her arm as an invitation for Karilan to join her.
~Eela
Karilan set down a pair of pants and moved to sit beside Eela. She looked at her and said “Hmm… something is on your mind. I can see that. What is it?”
Karilan
As Karlian settled in beside her, Eela wrapped her arm around Karilan and held them close. She rested her head on theirs and reached her free hand for Karilan’s giving it a squeeze. Her shields were thinner right now but that was okay and useful in this moment. It took less energy to maintain or to raise or drop. She intuitively understood that something deep had shifted today and wanted to honour it in the best way she knew how.
She let that image of Karilan she had conjured in Karilan’s bedroom that day where Karilan stepped more fully into themselves, bestowing kisses upon Eela and cementing something deeper than either had expected. The beautiful aurora shifted from her mind to Karilan’s through touch and Eela revelled in it, understanding that now of all times she had to connect more, not less. Sutanna, she whispered to Karilan’s mind. You are beautiful light for me, and this is the Haliian word for an aurora. It is the name my heart chose for you. I know everything is chaotic right now and things have been scary, but I will be okay. I’m not right now, but I’m better than I was. And yet, I’m still aware that I am on the edge of being chaos again myself. I need something from you my Sutanna. I need you to be my conscience, my guide, as you so often have been, as you were earlier this morning at the bookshop. I need you to question me when it is needed, challenge my thoughts and actions. I’m not sure I can do that myself right now. Is this something you can do?
~Eela
At Eela’s touch, Karilan closed their eyes and allowed the connection to develop fully between them. Karilan shifted slightly so their foreheads touched while keeping the contact full and ebbing back and forth between them. Do you really need to ask that question? You know how much you mean to me, Eela Dasca… and in what ways. There is nothing that could ever or will ever stop me from being here for you. You are more and more a part of my life everyday… and I relish the idea of helping see us through this storm.
Karilan
That us was so special, and perhaps in the grand scheme of this day, strange, but for Eela it was as easy to take in and believe as breathing. For far too long she had juggled her feelings for people and the needs of her marriage. She had denied the fullness of who she was in favour of not forcing another person to be uncomfortable. And yet it had been far deeper than that and she was still trying to unpack the control and manipulation.
The simple fact was that Eela had a vast heart and should have have agreed to any sort of monogamy. It was her. And yet she had been so young, so willing to try things to make a life work with the man who had swept her unexpectedly off her feet. Yes, she was grieving a man she had cared for deeply, and maybe in time would have come to love, but that didn’t mean her heart had suddenly stopped functioning. After all, wasn’t it her connections with people that had allowed them to save her from a terrible fate this morning?
I’m so glad for you, that you are in my life, she said, wishing they could just curl up and stay that way for a time. But alas, she had a therapist to talk to, and a police commissioner who wanted a statement. Her needs were conflicting with her desires, but there would be time for the rest later. Stay with me while I do my video calls with Counsellor Iven and Commissioner Karlson? There’s nothing I could say to them that I wouldn’t tell you. But also, if you need to go at any point, I understand. It’s not just about me right now.
~Eela
I am where I need and want to be… next to you. Karilan thought back. The thought and it’s all-encompassing emotions attached to it washed over them both and Karilan smiled. I will be here as long as you need or want me. Everything else is secondary right now. Now… make your calls. Commissioner first. Deal with that before the counselor. Karilan moved slightly and kissed Eela’s chhek, leaving her lips on her skin for a long moment before slowly pulling away. Karilan opened their eyes and smiled at Eela. “And when this is done, you will rest.” The statement allowed for no argument.
Karilan
She chuckled through their link. Aye, aye. Her cheek tingled with the impression of Karilan’s lips and it soothed something in her, something like an echo from their experiment with the canar. She turned her gaze and briefly looked at the device sitting on the dresser and she had a strange emotion float up through her: betrayal. Well that was interesting. Pushing it away, she kept her arm wrapped around Karilan, not wanting this moment to end.
It was this scene that Caridee returned to and a soft smile came to her lips. She didn’t want to disturb them, but it was necessary. She was almost going to knock when Eela lifted her head and turned her gaze on her daughter. “I spoke with Lieutenant Iven, he’s waiting for your call when you’re ready.”
Eela nodded. “The Police Commissioner needs to speak with me also. Elema is setting up a video call between us.”
“Okay,” Caridee said, sensing her mother’s resolve. “Just… be mindful that you’ve been through a lot this morning. Take breaks where you need to. Meanwhile, I’m going to go make some more tea. Would either of you like anything?”
“A herbal tea, if he has any?” Eela said, before turning to Karilan, hand still firmly in theirs. She would have to let go soon, but she was loathe to. “Anything for you?”
~Eela
Karilan smiled and said “I have everything I need right here.” and then they looked at Caridee and said “But I wouldn’t be averse to some coffee.” and they chuckled softly.
Karilan
“Tea and coffee I have.” came a familiar voice. Hyrushi stepped inside. He seemed his normal self, save for bandages on his hands and some peeking up out of his shirt collar. He looked at Eela and said “Welcome back. You were missed.” He glanced at Karilan and then back at Eela. “I will prepare the tea and coffee.” He looked at Caridee and said “If you would assist, I would appreciate it.” and he turned and walked out the door.
Hyrushi, Governor
As he left, there was a familiar brush of his mind from Eela, though not an intrusion. It was filled with gratitude but also a pensiveness. There was not time to talk… now. But later, oh there would be things to discuss. Though they both knew this.
Caridee smiled at Karilan and nodded at Hyrushi, following him down the stairs. “Dr. Fayth is still unconscious but closely monitored. How are you feeling?” she asked.
~Eela & Caridee
Hyrushi didn’t turn around, but said “Some pain, but that will pass I’m sure.” flatly as they walked down the stairs. He led her into the kitchen and said “Tea is in that cabinet. I will make coffee. Which do you prefer?”
Hyrushi
He wasn’t her patient and it wasn’t her place, but she could only hope that was true. “You know, it’s been a hell of a morning and I think I could use some coffee at this point myself.” Her mother wanting herbal tea over anything caffeinated spokes volumes to the distress she knew her mother was still experiencing. She could carry mugs upstairs but she doubted he really needed her help making the beverages, so she waited for instructions or to see if there was more he wanted to say.
~Caridee
Hyrushi took grounds and a an old Terran-style coffee maker called a ‘French Press’ and hot water and began making the coffee. “So tell me, Doctor… how do you feel about our attempt to help your mother? Do you believe it successful?” he asked flatly.
Hyrushi, Governor
Sevren drew in a deep breath. “Too well, I’m afraid. But I suppose that was to be expected. Yes, she feel emotions again and can share them. Her psi abilities are functional and I’ve seen her use them. That is all good. But…” It was hard for her, this place. Her mother had chosen her to be her medical proxy those years ago for a reason and it was clear her mother valued her input now as well, but for Caridee she was uncomfortable with the parallels. “None of you were there after her accident, when she was figuring out how to function again.” She planted her hands on the counter. “The thing about her brain injury that is still true even all these years later is that my mother can be subject to extremes. She’s worked very hard to level a lot of that out, but the fundamental shift in her brain function makes her more susceptible. The middle ground can be a difficult place for her to find, especially after something traumatic. That doesn’t mean that what she’s feeling and experiencing isn’t real. It is, but she can more easily be swayed toward extreme behaviour. And that can be fine, and I am only just getting a glimpse of what her work here really asks of her, but I could see at such a delicate time that it could be problematic. It’s going to take time and healing for her to be able to find balance, to resurrect her much stronger mental shields. She’ll be more… receptive to everything for a time. And now she’s grieving while also feeling intense pressure to do her job. I suppose my concern will be that she shoves it all down in order to function as Lieutenant Governor and Commander in Chief, and try to deal with it later, but in my experience, it will all have it’s say whether she wants it to or not.”
~Caridee
Hyrushi paused action while he waited for the coffee to steep. He was silent for a long time, looking out the glass wall overlooking the pool and garden. “I believe we may have a way to frame a middle ground for her and still allow for her to be productive and taking action.” He turned and began to slowly press the floating grounds down through the now dark coffee with the plunger. “I will task her with assisting Ambassador Mathis directly with the Vren. They know one another, and share feelings of deep attachment to Mr. Jones already; so that will give her a foundation and an understanding that none of us can give her. Additionally…” and he turned and looked at Caridee. “You will not repeat this to anyone, as it is highly classified and unknown to even most of those involved. The Vren are not psychic or empathic. In fact, they are the opposite. They have no readable energy in that arena of any kind… at least, as far as we can tell. Not even Docotor Fayth is able to read them. So… if Captain Dasca is surrounded by few individuals to give her input and even more that can’t… she should be less susceptible to being overwhelmed, yes?”
Hyrushi, Governor
Caridee nodded as she inhaled deeply. “I think so, yes. My mother has never been very good at sitting on the sidelines when there is work to be done. And this situation is vastly different than her accident. She’s not rebuilding her entire life this time, so I suspect that this state will be fairly short lived. Especially if she’s working with her therapist throughout.”
She debated whether to say anything more, unsure of what transpired through the canar connection and how much he would have been aware of. “When she… came back to us, that moment of breakthrough was rather intense as we expected. Karilan and I grounded her as best we could, but there was nothing we could do to stop her from experiencing what she had before. That included Dash’s death, Governor. My hypothesis was correct. I’ve never wanted to be wrong so much as in that moment, but regardless, there are things that might need to be done once things settle down a bit to help her with that physical experience. I will have that conversation about it with her, since we were going to do the ritual during Batarael anyway, but I will say that Batarael can’t come soon enough. It might seem contrary to have such a big celebration so soon after such a tragedy, but this holiday is about so much more than parties. Especially for her. If we can get her through till then, I think all the rituals involved will go a long ways towards longer term healing, not just from today, but other recent events as well.”
~Caridee
Hyrushi finished pressing the coffee and transfered the pot to a tray with mugs. “Then we get her through to the rituals.” he stated as if it were an indisputable fact. He turned and looked at her and gave a slightly sarcasticaly disapproving look. “You didn’t make the tea.” and he shook his head slightly and began to make a pot.
Hyrushi
