It was just after ten in the morning. The investigation into Dash Jones’ death had been ongoing for less than five hours, Joseph Karlson had been back on the planet for just over an hour. He’d finally changed into a full suit, charcoal grey this time with no waistcoat. The double-breasted suit was tailor-made to fit his bulky, muscular figure. Joseph still hadn’t checked the file he’d gotten from the CIA yet, he didn’t want to color his view for this interview, he could always return for follow ups later, there was also the question of what had been going on earlier that morning but that would come later.

He left the elevator and was immediately stopped by Starfleet Security, he simply smiled and opened his jacket “Hold a moment son” He removed his personalized phaser from the shoulder strap, handing the curved sidearm to the Security, the young man widened his eyes at the weapon, the wooden handle always made weapon enthusiasts interested, it looked like something from an old Holo-adventure, more of a showpiece than a weapon. Joseph then reached behind him and pulled a hefty metallic object attached to his belt, the brass knuckles got another wide stare from the young man and a smile from Joseph. He’d picked a regular cane this time and carried no other weapons but he told them to pat him down and scan him anyway. He approved of the measures taken even within the Government tower “I’ll be wanting those back, son” He said giving the young man a wink.

After the search, he made his way to the Lieutenant Governor’s office, he hadn’t called up to let her know he was coming but he had sent a message to his counterpart in Starfleet Security and CC’d General Harris that this was official police business and not a meeting between Cabinet members. He walked up to the secretary and cleared his throat “Please inform the Lieutenant Governor that Commissioner Karlson is here to speak with her” It may be a breach of protocol to arrive with no notice but that was necessary for initial interviews in his opinion. He did come alone out of respect for the office, leaving Pangolin to twiddle his thumbs in his precinct.

An alert that someone was coming up to the floor had sounded in the conference room, and so Elema had made it to her desk before Karlson stepped out of the lift. “Commissioner, I’m afraid the Lieutenant Governor isn’t here right now and she won’t be available for some time,” the Napean said, her purple hair doing nothing to dissuade the serious demeanour she exuded.

Joseph smiled his usual grandfatherly smile, it usually had a disarming effect but some did find it disturbing on such a large man of undeterminable age “Yes, an unrelated medical issue as I understood it. The problem is that she hasn’t checked in at her place of residence and isn’t at Sacred Heart or Starfleet Medical” He tapped a large finger on the desk, apparently an absentminded movement “Now I just assumed that an Officer of her caliber would go to the office to distract herself from both her illness and the recent tragic events, seeing as I can’t find her” There was a subtle emphasis on the I as if personally offended by the thought he couldn’t find someone, which in all fairness he was. “Am I to take the old axiom on assumptions to heart, that she isn’t here, at home or under medical care?” He asked with the same kindly smile and polite tone.

Not one to be easily intimidated, the slight woman smiled. “She has not returned to her residence or been checked into a medical facility, this is true, but I assure you she is safe and being well taken care of. I think you can understand that this is a particularly delicate time and given the personal impact the tragic events have had, she decided it was best to not be in the office where she might make mistakes she wouldn’t otherwise under normal circumstances. Nor would the Lieutenant Governor being admitted to the hospital being on the news right now help the situation, don’t you agree?”

Joseph only smiled the same smile at her question, he didn’t point out that Starfleet had their own medical facilities that could avoid something like this, nor did he point out their own chain of command being designed to avoid such things. The young receptionist was just doing her job, nothing more.

“Now, I don’t know whether she is currently free where she is, but if you don’t mind waiting a moment, I can contact her and see if she is up to speaking with you?” Elema held a pleasant expression despite the fact that she had no idea if she would indeed be able to get a hold of Dasca.

Joseph nodded “I don’t mind much these days, feel free to contact her. But her feeling up to speaking with me isn’t really an option” He kept the smile up but his eyes were no longer involved in the smile “Me being here is a courtesy to the Lieutenant Governor, her being unreachable as the primary witness in the murder of a Federal Government official is unacceptable” He put a sight emphasis on Witness as she was also the prime suspect by default “But I’m assuming that since she’s not seeking medical attention that she’ll be up to it” He added in a cheerful tone.

Elema maintained an even expression. “I did not say she had not sought medical attention, just that she hadn’t been checked into a medical facility. They are two different things. “Now, if you’ll give me a minute, I will contact her.”

Sreer stepped into Dasca’s office, closing the door.

She came out a couple minutes later and nodded. “I’m afraid an in person meeting isn’t possible, but she’s able to do a video conference with you. I can get you set up in one of our meeting rooms.”
