Joseph sat in a large leather chair in his home office. The office was of similar size and design to his Government tower office although the items on display were originals and not holographic copies. His desk was also made of real Brown Maple that he’d worked himself. His long-stemmed pipe was clenched between his teeth as he occasionally puffed, the window open and the system made sure to remove all smoke as he puffed it out. He was looking at his computer and frowning, it was the reports on what he’d missed and it was bad.On the screen were several open systems, the screen itself could extend in any direction to put more information on display, that was without using the office holographic displays. He had the arrest record for one Abigail Tenkiller, a report on the assault on Urg’tohn and Jal’na, a surveillance report from his brother’s intelligence network, and a blurry video of the General being assaulted outside the embassy. He had to regulate the strength in his hands and unclench his jaw before he broke his pipe in three, another file was open with the guards and Joseph’s personal records on his longtime friend Urg. This was messy, xenophobia and racism within families were always messy and even though it was rare humans coming so far out were sometimes the worst part of their species. He looked at the chrono, it was late, too late to make calls. So of course he rang Urg’s personal line.
Commissioner Karlson
“I wondered how long it would take you to call, my friend.” Urg said as his face came into view. He smiled at Karlson, but it didn’t have the typical maniacal aspect to it. It just seemed… tired. “I take it you have heard?”
Urg, Lord Duroc
Joseph returned the smile with the same tiredness “ I will start with congratulations on your nuptials and an invitation from my wife and I for dinner at our place for you and your esteemed lady wife” he hardened his face and continued “ let’s start with the fact that I don’t mind your issue with Tenkiller, as far as I’m concerned, it is a matter between families. That being said, I have one question and one request. My request is that the guard that struck Tenkiller be sent as far away from Oed as possible. I don’t mind that he struck him what I do mind is that he did so outside where anyone could see, That type of amateur work will not be tolerated by myself and should not be tolerated by you. If the Guard takes exception to that. I will happily teach him a lesson in propriety. My question is what is your endgame? I give you plenty of leeway, more than I probably should but I do so because I like and I trust you. But there is a line, and then the years that you’ve known me you know That I do not tolerate Things that place the security of the colony at risk”
Commissioner Karlson
Urg was silent aoment and then said “Your candor is, as always, refreshing my brother. It will be done as you say. I will send him to attend to my brother on his ship. That should keep him sufficiently busy… or dead.” and he chuckled. “Three Days, and he will be gone. As to the security of the colony…” and he grew quiet, which was never a good sign for Urg.
Joseph just nodded, he’d expected as little resistance, he was certain that there was a similar thought process regarding the assault going on behind those ridges.
After a moment of thought, he looked hard at Karlson. “My wife was assaulted. Atta ked with no cause save her species. By some random human who so happens to be the sibling of one of rhe colony’s most influential people. Tell me, my dear Karlson… how would you recommend I handle that? I didn’t kill her, although I am beginning to believe that would ha e this whole affair less complicated. She is in your custody, not mine. And I have made no claim against her. What else would you have me do?”
Urg, Lord Duroc
Joseph shook his head “Killing that woman would have made things infinitely more complicated, resulting in very annoying things like the recalling of ambassadorial credentials and all that nonsense and is the aforementioned line” He spoke calmly, he wasn’t concerned with what had already happened beyond the assault itself, he was concerned with how Urg would react. “And I asked for your endgame, I have nothing to say regarding your actions so far, you should have pride in your restraint especially considering your position my question is how do you want to resolve this” He raised an eyebrow in a preventative move to signal he wasn’t finished “Jal’na has a legal recourse, the assault was public” He then added under his breath “And breathtakingly stupid”* before continuing “Criminal charges will be pressed and civil litigation is possible” He then shrugged “There will need to be a public showing of something being done, Oed is a Human colony with a minority of Aliens, mostly Federation species but also others such as yourself, hate crimes are taken very seriously but the Federation version of seriously. I need to know if you intend to pursue a more Klingon approach directly with the Tenkillers” There was no accusation in his tone, he’d simply been away too long, if he’d been there when this was happening a lot of things could have been avoided, kept quiet or at least contained. Now he was in damage control mode
Commissioner Karlson
Urg leaned back and set his hands on his broad chest, grinning at Karlson. “My dear Joseph… I have no say in this. My wife saw to that when she prevented me from… ‘pursuing a more Klingon approach’. What happens next is wholly up to her.” He leaned forward and grew serious. “The Tenkiller family is coming to us for a meal tomorrow. After that is done, I will have a better understanding of where her mind is at. But I will tell you this… this attack awoke something in my mate. I am not yet sure just what that is.”
