Ilena was laying ice and cold packs all along Hyrushi. He was sweat soaked and she needed to check him for other blisters. “His temperature has stabalized, but he’s still too hot.” She scanned over him, the inhibitor had stopped any empathic input and the anesthazine had knocked him out cold. His respiration and pulse were high, but not dangerously so. The medication would help with that.
Yavia was knelt beside Sharah. She was far too professional to let her fear show. She ran the tricorder over Sharah. The readings were very similar to what they had been that first weekend together. As long as Sharah woke up soon, she should be fine. “She’s unconscious but stable.” Between the two of them, they took the gurney they had brought and lifted first the Governor onto it and took him to one of the other guest rooms, then they did the same with Sharah. “Sevren, will you be alright? We can’t leave them alone either.”
“I have this,” Caridee said with confidence. “Do what you need to.”
Ilena stayed with Hyrushi, “Sorry Governor, but I’ve got to make sure I treat all those nasty burns. I promise it’s nothing I haven’t seen before.” She murmured softly to him. Ilena was always of the mind that people could hear and at least feel your intention. She stripped him to his shorts and went about the task of cooling his body and treating the blisters and burns. She was careful and methodical and then pulled the sheet over him.
Oh, but it was something she hadn’t seen before. The man was covered in tattoos. In fact, save for his feet, hands, face, neck, and a strip down the middle of his chest; all of Hyrushi was covered in colorful and highly stylized tattoos. And, oddly, none of the tattoos seemed to have burned… just the unadorned flesh.
Ilena took pause only to note that the area of the tattoos were unburned, and wondered if there was some property in the ink that protected the Governor. Other than that, she was too professional to even mentally comment about them.
Yavia stayed with Sharah. She raised her feet and brushed her hair back. She didn’t try to reach her mind, but let her rest. Her psilosynine levels were low, but her body was showing signs of extreme stress. Her hand was raw from where she’d been holding Hyrushi’s hand and Yavia treated that. She sat beside her and held her hand. “It’s alright Sweetheart, just rest for a bit. I’ll take you home. I’m right here.”
Yavia and Ilena
Caridee shifted as more space was created around the bed and she lay alongside her mother and shuddered at the intense experience she was having vicariously through Eela, but still she kept the physical contact. “I think I was right,” she told Karilan. “I think she experienced his death. Which is going to make this aftermath more complicated. She’s going to need a lot of support.”
Karilan couldn’t or didn’t hear her. They just focused on Eela.
Eela meanwhile was struggling within her psuedo-consciousness. She struggled to breathe, but it didn’t show up on the readings. She desperately wanted past this wall of physical pain and so she mentally reached out to those threads of care and warmth, entangling her own with them and tethered herself to both Karilan and Caridee.
~Caridee & Eela
Hyrushi
When Karilan felt Eela, tears slid down her cheeks. She grabbed the tendrils of thought and emotion and pulled at them, drawing Eela close to them. Eela… it’s okay. I’m here. I won’t let you fall again. I have you. Karilan whispered to her mind. I have you. Breathe, Eela… breathe. It’s okay… we are all here. A spark of humor filled the connection. Except Kenzo. He decided to take a nap. and there was soft laughter swirling around Eela’s thoughts.
Massat
Eela couldn’t split her mind but she did sent a waft of care towards Caridee, the recognition of her daughter’s energy finally dawning on her.
But something about Karilan’s thoughts cut through. Maybe it was because their friendship had deepened so much lately, or maybe it was something else, but whatever the reason her voice and love cut through the fogginess of the medication. Her lilting laughter sounded through their connection followed by worry and then a profound sadness. But there as the sense that she was breathing again at a more even pace, the terrible feeling of suffocating having not passed, but reconciled. Though she wasn’t aware of them, tears slid down Eela’s cheeks as well as a part of her understood what she had just experienced.
Caridee watched the monitor while she witnessed this beautiful communion and didn’t resent it in the least. It was that piece of her mother that was so poignant and anyone who took the time to get to truly know her understood that one of Eela Dasca’s most exquisite gifts was her ability to draw in people and connect with them. It was so lovely to see it in action again after so long.
~Eela & Caridee
Karilan gasped slightly and tears mirrored Eela’s. Karilan stood up leaned over Eela, looking down at her. “Welcome back. I missed you.” they whispered.
Karilan
Eela was still trapped in the fogginess and even as her eyes slipped open, she fought to surface towards Karilan’s welcoming voice and failed. The fogginess persisted and rather than a comforting place to let go, it felt like a weight holding her down. She began to panic, her heart rate spiking, and her skin beading.
Caridee was on her feet in an instant. “Stay with her and keep her grounded, but take off the tomo on her forehead,” she told Karilan. She knew the tramadol had been a higher dose than they would normally give a patient, but they had required the side effects, and now those side effects were complications she needed to counter. She took long strides to Sharah’s open med kit, looking for anything that would work. Finally, she found an opioid agonist that had likely been put in as a precaution, dialled in the correct dose, and pressed the hypo to her mother’s neck, the telltale hiss an exhale for them all.
A moment, then a few more, and then the warning alarms from the monitoring system quieted. Eela began to take more even breaths and she tried opening her eyes again. This time, things were clearer, Karilan came into sight and she sighed. She didn’t have the energy to push any of the emotions away, and Eela’s inner world was a swirl of worry, fear, grief, pain, and more strongly, gratitude. She looked around the room. “Sharah and Kenzo?” The nap comment floated through her brain but she couldn’t reconcile it all just yet.
“They needed some attention once he broke through the wall. I think they’ll be okay, but I’ll go get an update. You stay put here with Karilan,” Caridee said in a firm tone, knowing her mother far too well and wanting to stop the woman from leaping out of bed just yet. She was waiting for the effects of the emotional tsunami to catch up with her mother but as the seconds passed, she realized it might not come. Interesting. “I’ll be back in a moment.”
Eela smirked a little at her daughter’s bossiness and turned her gaze on Karilan. “Well, this has been an interesting morning.” There were so many things in her mind and it was hard to decide which one to even speak about. Her eyes glistened. “I was with him when he died and it was terrible. Do you… do you think he felt me too?” Dash was Human and not a telepath. The connection from the canar was not something she knew enough about in this instance. But maybe, just maybe, he hadn’t felt alone as he died.
Karilan wiped away their own tears and nodded. “I’m sure of it.” they said softly, holding Eela’s hand in their own. “Right now… just try and breathe, okay? And don’t you ever scare me like this again, Eela Dasca. Okay?” they asked.
Eela squeezed Karilan’s hand, and while a small part of her was scared of contact, of what it could mean, the rest of her that she had been unearthing from the conditioning and negative messaging from Cory wanted to be free to show love in all the ways that made her whole. “I would love to promise that, but given my life I think it’s a dangerous promise. I certainly will never aim to scare you like that.” Her mind drifted to this day and the things that had to happen. Barely out of life threatening danger and her mind had already turned to work. Figures. But then again it wasn’t everyday a diplomatic aide was murdered during very delicate diplomatic negotiations. Had anyone had a chance to talk to Kek yet? She knew Kenzo had had the cabinet meeting but they all had been here for her, and hell, she wasn’t even sure what time it was, let alone what might be happening outside of this home.
Moving down the hall, Caridee found Yavia and Sharah. “My mom has come through. How’s Sharah?” she asked the Deltan.
~Eela & Caridee
Karilan
Yavia looked up, “Unconscious, and likely to stay that way for awhile. They are stable, but other than that, I cannot say.” She turned back to Sharah and brushed her hair back. She wanted to call TK and have him come, but then she would have to tell him where and why they were there. She needed to take Sharah home.
Yavia
Caridee watched for a moment and while she wasn’t a telepath, she knew how worried Yavia was. “Eela is stable and I needed to counter the tramadol. I suspect between that and the grounding we did immediately after that it has suppressed some of the physical reactions I was anticipating. If Ilena stays, we can keep on eye on the Governor and wait for the sedative to wear off.” The likelihood of both him and her mother both needing critical care at the same time was astonishingly low, but she definitely wanted to keep a close eye on Hyrushi. “Whatever you need to do for Sharah, you should. I don’t know her abilities well enough to be of help, so tell me what you need for her and we’ll make things happen.”
~Eela & Caridee
Yavia smiled her thanks, but the truth was, no one knew what to do for Sharah. She was hesitant to give her a sedative and a telepathic inhibitor wouldn’t work. She could put the headband on her, but without Sharah being awake she would have no way of knowing if it was set correctly. “Thank you Caridee. I will keep her here for now. You or Ilena may need an extra set of hands. I am glad Eela is awake and back to normal. It will be awhile before she is okay.”
Yavia
Caridee nodded. “Okay. I’m going to go check on the Governor.”
She slipped down the hall further and into the room with Kenzo and Ilena. “How is he doing?” she asked, moving to his bedside, her empathic abilities skimming to see what, if anything she could detect.
~Caridee
Ilena smiled as she came in. “He has some bad burns. We didn’t anticipate that, so I don’t have a portable burn unit with me. I don’t know who to call to get one, given the security. I have enough on hand to care for him, it just won’t heal as quickly. He is deeply asleep and undisturbed by what us going on around him. His core and surface temperature are dropping. His pulse, BP, and respiration with it. His K12 indicator is almost back to normal as well. He will be asleep for awhile.”
Ilena
Caridee nodded. “My instinct is to contact one of the assistants, but I don’t want to invade his privacy or my mother’s. So we’ll have to wait until he wakes up. If his vitals are slowly returning to normal, it’s best we just let them. Once he’s awake he can probably advise us on how best to get the burn unit. While he gave me leeway for my mother, I am not going to assume privileges for a hospital where no one knows me or knows I’m even here.” She shrugged. It was what they were dealing with.
“If it becomes necessary, I will contact the hospital and ask one of their guards to go pick it up. They already know that something is going on. For now I will wait and see.”
“Don’t wait too long if you’re concerned. I’d rather react sooner rather than later.” Caridee was trusting both Ilena and Yavia’s professional judgement. While Caridee did indeed have a medical degree and worked in a hospital, her care was primarily psychiatric. She was hardly a neurologist and so she was trusting the two to act if needed.
“My mother is awake and stable. I’m keeping a close eye on her for a delayed reaction but by all accounts what they did was successful.” It was hard for her to reconcile the risk and sacrifice of the two, but it had given them Eela back and that was an incredible thing. All in all, Caridee was feeling a bit like a wrung out rag, but also just happy that there were no fatalities from their experimental treatment.
~Caridee
Ilena was not so optimistic. These types of things could turn fatal very quickly and very suddenly. They might have Dasca back, but they could lose the Governor and Sharah still. “I will stay with him. You should go back to your mother.”
Ilena
Caridee stepped past Ilena, but paused a moment to rest a hand on her shoulder and gave it a squeeze. “Thank you, for being here,” she said, before stepping out and back down the hall to her mother’s room.
A quick glance at Eela’s vitals and while they still weren’t ideal, they were better than they had been. Her attention was drawn by her mother’s wave of worry. “How are they?” Eela asked.
Caridee wasn’t going to lie to her mother but she also didn’t want to worry her more than was necessary. “Unconscious and stable enough at the moment. But they require close attention and the Governor’s burns need more attention than Ilena has the equipment for. We’re waiting to see how his condition progresses before having the hospital send what she needs over.”
“Why not just do so now?” Eela asked, frowning.
Caridee looked at Karilan for a moment before answering. “Because no one outside of those in this home right now know what’s happened. It had been assumed that that would be for the best so as to protect your privacy and that of those involved.”
Eela was a swirl of emotions, and she found controlling any of them incredibly difficult. It was not so unlike when she had awoken from the coma and found her emotions free things with a mind of their own, and right now Eela was desperately worried about her friends. She pushed herself to a sitting position, though it took more effort than she had anticipated.
~Eela & Caridee
Karilan thought for a moment and then said “Why not just call his assistant? Surely she knows about what is happening. She can make all the necessary arraignments, right?” and she looked from Eela to Caridee and back again.
Karilan
“I actually would not make that assumption. The Governor seemed quite adamant that it be kept under wraps,” Caridee said.
Eela let out a frustrated grumble and flipped the weighted blanket to the side, though it surprised her how hard that was. She was pretty strong given all the physio and exercise she did on a regular basis, so it was a reminder for her to not push it too much. The question was whether she should listen and right now, she could be careful and still do what she needed. Eela proceeded to try to slip out of bed. “I will deal with it.”
“Mom, stop, you need rest.”
Eela shot Caridee a glare. “I can rest after, but right now I as Lieutenant Governor can do this one thing and look it won’t even cause a kerfuffle unlike earlier.” Her feet touched the ground and she remembered that she didn’t have her brace. “Walk with me?” she asked Karilan. She didn’t want to trip or lose her balance because she had just come off a sedating high.
Karilan hopped up and let Eela use them for a crutch-slash-cane. “Always, you know that.” they said.
Caridee stifled the argument that sat on her lips. Some days her mother was irrepressible and it was a wonderful thing. Other times it made her want to pull out her hair.

Karilan
Yavia could hear the strained voices and the beginnings of disagreement. She kissed Sharah’s forehead and slipped out of the room in time to see Eela, supported by Massat step out of the room. They weren’t going to the bathroom, as the bedroom had one of their own. Yavia tecognized that stubborn look even if it was blunted by drugs and grief and psychic trauma made physical.
Yavia moved to stand in feont of them. She spoke softly, but firmly and set a hand on Eela’s shoulder so she could feel how serious Yavia was, but also the concern and cate she had for her. “Eela Dasca get back in that bed. Your vitals are not nearly strong enough to do more than rest, and you are still under the influence of the drugs you were given. I don’t know what you think is so important, but it’s not. Don’t you dare risk yourself after what they risked for you. Back to bed.”
Yavia, Nurse
“She’s helping with the Governor.” Karilan said and then looked at Eela. “Don’t push it, though. I’m not carrying your butt up any stairs.”
