Kenzo nodded and set his hand on the canar.
The crystal illuminated as the connection was made and it would stay that way until it was broken.
At first, nothing happened. Everything was just… nothing. There was Keno’s mind, and that was all. Hyrushi drew some more power from Fayth and began using it like a sonar. He pushed his power through the nothing util he felt something push back. It was small, and he almost missed it. He focused on the sensation and began to feel a weight… a boundary that wouldn’t let him through. “I found her.” he whispered out loud.
Hyrushi focused on the boundary, feeling along it until he could feel where it began and ended. It was huge. It was like a typical shield telepaths and empaths created, but in reverse… and it was massive. In his mind, Kenzo stood before the boundary. Eela? Can you hear me, Eela? he said aloud, his voice cascading into the emptiness. He pushed against the emptiness, drawing yet more power to expand his mind and push the border back further and further.
The power he was pulling was seemingly limitless, the more he drew the more that filled it’s place, waiting to be used. In the seeming never-ending expanse that thread of power was an anchor line, showing him the way back, keeping him safe.
As Hyrushi sat, his skin became flushed. Sweat beaded on is forehead and soon perspiration could be seen through his shirt. The hand that held Fayth’s became warm… then hot, but not yet unbearable… just moderately uncomfortable.
As the heat increased, Sharah’s hand tightened on his.
In the canar, the further Kenzo pushed the boundary being something and nothing; the harder it became to push. Hyrushi drew more power and pushed harder and harder; until at last he came to a wall. In his mind’s eye it was a fortress made of solid metal. Eela!! he called, hoping that she would at least hear him… know he was coming.
Hyrushi, Governor
It was known that Eela Dasca had a formidable strength of will, but this before him was a tangible representation of it. No, she had not erected this wall herself, but she was upholding it, something he’d know intuitively. Something deep down within her was trying to protect her from something devastating. It was not pain, no, it was an agony that someone like her should never experience.
But the medication had made things fluid and she couldn’t tell where she began and ended. Something was there, outside of her protective space. She turned towards it, curious, her inner explorer never one to turn down learning and understanding. She stepped towards it. Was it a voice? It felt familiar. As the medication held her tightly, and her conscious, rational mind was suppressed, reality in this mind-space shifted.
On the other side of the safe space, the voice sounded again. She pressed herself up against the wall. Her small hands pressed flat along with her cheek.
Hello? a tiny voice called out to whomever might be there. It was a child’s voice.
~Eela
Sharah heard it, the tentative seeking, child like. Sharah created another thread, pulling in feelings of safety, protection, warmth, Home, family. Companionship rather than loneliness. Along with all the other emotions, she feed and wove it through the link. Let the feelings call to her, make Hyrushi’s call more desirable than where Eela was.
Sharah
Hyrushi smiled, knowing it was Eela… or at least a version of her. Hello, Eela. Do you remember me? My name is Kenzo… I am your friend… and I am going to get you out of there, if you will help me. Hyrushi drew more energy in, slowly building the flow of emotion through him, through the hand he set against the boundary, and forcing it into the wall before him.
His hand seemed to connect with something- there was warmth penetrating through the wall, small though it was. They always leave, the small voice said. The other feelings though were making her protective space seem more like a prison, or a tomb. It was a small shift, but the innate curiosity of Eela wanted to understand. *How do I get out?”
Follow my voice, Eela. Push through and come to me. Kenzo said.
Sharah kept the stream steady though it was starting to get difficult to control the flow. She knew Kenzo had made contact, they couldn’t stop now. Ilena and Yavia exchanged looks. Eela’s vitals seemed fine, but there were sudden changes in both Hyrushi and Fayth.
Kenzo’s body was reacting to the input. Sweat poured off of him, soaking his shirt and pants. His hair was matted to his head, and the hand that held Sharah’s felt like it was starting to become a hot coal. Around his collar, small blisters appeared, as they did on his hands as well.
The barrier started to glow where his hand pushed against it. He needed more energy. In his mind, he took a deep breath, and then he drew in more energy than he ever had before in his life. The wall flared as a planet’s worth of emotion suddenly flooded into the connection of the canar.
It was a last desperate attempt at self-preservation. Sharah’s mind cleared enough to realize she and Kenzo were very much in trouble. She sent a thread of warning through their connection, but it did nothing. She relaxed her hand, but they were still gripped together. Sharah jerked her hand away, her eyes snapping open. “Kenzo, no! Stop.”
Kenzo’s body began to burn. Burn mark appeared on his hands, neck, and face. He howled in pain and his eyes flew open, the black pupils suddenly flat white… but his hand stayed on the canar.
Hyrushi
Kenzo screamed, and Sharah echoed the sound. They hadn’t really needed to physical contact, it had just provided focus. She stumbled up and into the table a foot from her, “Get his hand off it!” she meant to yell, but it came out strained, but Ilena and Yavia were close enough and aware enough to sense her urgency. Yavia reached over to yank his hand off the canar. Sharah shoved anesthazine and a telepathic inhibitor into it and pressed it into his neck. There was a loud pop and long hiss as the hypo diffused into his system. “Ice, cold packs.” Yavia barely caught her before she collapsed on the floor. Ilena reached out both hands to stop the governor from sliding off the chair.
Fayth
“On it!” Caridee ran to get the ice packs from the kitchen and tried not to worry about what might or might not be happening with her mother.
As his hand was removed form the canar, Kenzo had a fleeting image of a child behind a wall of glass… and then everything went black.
A split moment before Kenzo’s connection had been severed, there was a dent placed in the wall. For a moment nothing happened, but as the others scrambled to help Kenzo and Sharah, that dent began to spider, cracks travelling farther and deeper along the wall. Cracks that became crevices until that wall crumbled down.
Everything washed over Eela, now alone in her own mind again. Except that she wasn’t. She could sense people, and emotions, and in that moment, the memories her body and mind had blockaded out of protection swept over her like a tsunami. And more than the grief and incomprehension was the physical pain that came with sharing someone’s mind and body and the lingering connection that had bound her to Dashiel Jones as he died.
Pain blossomed on areas of her body, as if struck, and then came the pain in her skull, one that was oddly familiar. Then came the lack of air.
Despite the tramadol, Eela surfaced from her sedation but lacked the ability to grip reality. Still in a hallucinogenic state, she couldn’t process that this wasn’t happening to her, but was an intense memory. “Can’t breath,” she murmured, eyes open. Somewhere in the distance of all this was the sensation of death, not like this specific instance. It was much more removed from herself and far more broad, as it it had been many.
~Eela
Kenoz collapsed to the floor, his sweat-soaked body sliding through Ilena’s grasp. He slumped down, unconscious. His body radiated heat, so much so that it seemed he would combust at any moment. But he did not. Slowly the heat began to ease.
Hyrushi
Karilan had held onto Eela through the whole ordeal. As the hands were pulled away from the canar, they grabbed Eela’s hands in theirs and screwed their eyes closed. They were not a powerful telepath or empath. Even for a Deltan, their ability was below average. But they concentrated all of themselves into opening their mind and connecting to Eela… holding in their heart only hope and fear and kindness… and love.
Karilan
Eela couldn’t quite process who was connected to her, but she felt everything they offered. Her vitals had spiked drastically, hovering along that danger line but never crossing it. Through the new connection, Karilan would experience what Eela was experiencing, including the sensation of not being able to breath.
Caridee returned with the ice packs and handed them to Ilena before she was acutely aware of that presence she had been trying to feel for the last while. Looking up, she saw her mother was conscious but could also tell that she was not quite aware just yet. She moved over and sat on the other side of the bed from Karilan and rested her hand on her mother’s face. “We’re here. You’re safe. We have you, just as I promised,” she said softly.
Looking over at Kenzo and Sharah, Caridee was still worried. “How are they?”
~Eela and Caridee
Ilena was laying ice and cold packs all along Hyrushi. He was sweat soaked and she needed to check him for other blisters. “His temperature has stabalized, but he’s still too hot.” She scanned over him, the inhibitor had stopped any empathic input and the anesthazine had knocked him out cold. His respiration and pulse were high, but not dangerously so. The medication would help with that.
Yavia was knelt beside Sharah. She was far too professional to let her fear show. She ran the tricorder over Sharah. The readings were very similar to what they had been that first weekend together. As long as Sharah woke up soon, she should be fine. “She’s unconscious but stable.” Between the two of them, they took the gurney they had brought and lifted first the Governor onto it and took him to one of the other guest rooms, then they did the same with Sharah. “Sevren, will you be alright? We can’t leave them alone either.”
“I have this,” Caridee said with confidence. “Do what you need to.”
Ilena stayed with Hyrushi, “Sorry Governor, but I’ve got to make sure I treat all those nasty burns. I promise it’s nothing I haven’t seen before.” She murmured softly to him. Ilena was always of the mind that people could hear and at least feel your intention. She stripped him to his shorts and went about the task of cooling his body and treating the blisters and burns. She was careful and methodical and then pulled the sheet over him.
Yavia stayed with Sharah. She raised her feet and brushed her hair back. She didn’t try to reach her mind, but let her rest. Her psilosynine levels were low, but her body was showing signs of extreme stress. Her hand was raw from where she’d been holding Hyrushi’s hand and Yavia treated that. She sat beside her and held her hand. “It’s alright Sweetheart, just rest for a bit. I’ll take you home. I’m right here.”
Yavia and Ilena
Caridee shifted as more space was created around the bed and she lay alongside her mother and shuddered at the intense experience she was having vicariously through Eela, but still she kept the physical contact. “I think I was right,” she told Karilan. “I think she experienced his death. Which is going to make this aftermath more complicated. She’s going to need a lot of support.”
Eela meanwhile was struggling within her psuedo-consciousness. She struggled to breathe, but it didn’t show up on the readings. She desperately wanted past this wall of physical pain and so she mentally reached out to those threads of care and warmth, entangling her own with them and tethered herself to both Karilan and Caridee.
