Moving to where she had set out the items for the ritual, Caridee grabbed a chair and set it next to the bed facing her mother. Then she grabbed the three vials and sat on the edge of the bed with Eela. “Close your eyes and inhale,” she said, wafting the first vial past her mother’s nose. “Again,” she said, doing the same with the second and then repeated with the third. “Okay, done. Which one do you gravitate towards?”

“The second,” Eela said without hesitation.
Caridee grinned at the predictability of the choice. “Amber and night-blooming keta blossom. Perfect for a grounded and sensual person.” She set the other two vials to the side. “Okay, so I’m going to do the initial ritual for the Sua Soams. It will ground you as we attempt this. Any questions?”

Eela shook her head. This wasn’t supposed to be her first attempt at the ritual in many years, but here they were. It was what it was. “Proceed.” It sounded so much like a command she would have given, but of course lacked the emphasis it would have under other circumstances.

“You’ll need to lie flat, but we can keep one pillow for your head and neck. Arms at your sides.” It took a moment for them to readjust Eela into position and then Caridee turned the vial over onto two fingertips. She placed her fingers flat on Eela’s forehead with fingertips touching gently but with a bit of pressure swept them over the forehead towards the temples and then along the sides of her face to the chin, down her neck to the collarbones and along the bones to the shoulders. Setting aside the stoppered vial, Caridee reached for the larger of the black pieces of fabric (that was heavier than it looked) and draped it reverently across her mother’s forehead, whispering a few word in Haliian.

Grabbing the canar next, she set it on the bed next to Eela’s hand and adjusted the chair. “Okay, Governor, if you’ll take a seat, but don’t touch the canar yet. Dr. Fayth, we’re ready to administer the tramadol. Once it kicks in, I’ll finish the ritual, finish setting things up and then we’ll begin.”

~Caridee & Eela

Sharah nodded to Ilena and she pulled the hypo out of her pocket and pressed it gently to Eela’s neck. There was the familiar pop-hiss as the medication was administered. Ilena switched the display and watched Eela’s vitals as the tramadol took effect.

Kenzo took a deep breath and then sat as instructed. He looked at Fayth and nodded once, and rhen vlosed his eyes. Slowly, very slowly, he began to lower wall after wall after wall. Walls he had held in place for years.

Eyes closed, Hyrushi held a hand out towards the canar, but didn’t touch it. His other hand he held towards Fayth. He was ready to take in whatever was needed to break through the wall imposed on Eela.

Hyrushi, Governor

Sharah sat in a chair next to Hyrushi and closed her eyes. There was a very delicate mental touch to each of the others (except Eela) in the room. It pulled in their feelings, emotions. She could hear their thoughts, but she ignored their frequency. She needed feelings. Then like focusing on a conversation across a massive loud amphitheater, she picked up on the ebb and flow of the emotiinal tides on Oed. It was more than a challenge to separate out the thoughts from the emotions because they were all interconnected. Sharah was determined and much stronger than she gave herself credit for.

It was a massive storm, even the beautiful parts. She struggled for a moment to keep the emotions of those in the room, those closest to Eela, at the forefront and the rest behind it, as a way to magnify their intensity and then let the rest flare with their own uniquness. Sharah reached out and took Hyrushi’s hand and sank into the tides, letting it take her and fill her and drown her. It was terrifying, but she went without hesitation. Then it suddenly flared and raced through her into the Governor.

Fayth, SFCMO

As the pair prepared, Caridee placed one hand on top of her mother’s head and the other just above her chest and closed her eyes. As her mother slipped into unconsciousness, her eyes closed too and Caridee recited a Haliian benediction for a safe journey inward, knowing the ritual words would help put Eela at ease with their familiarity. Leaning in, she removed her hands, she kissed her mother’s cheek and whispered into her ear, “You don’t need to fight this one. Surrender this time. I promise have you.”

That complete, Caridee grabbed the small of the weighted cloths and and moved around to the other side to where Kenzo and Sharah were. She reached over and placed her mother’s hand on the base of the canar with reverence and then laid the the cloth over Eela’s hand. “The tomo should stop any small movement of her body from accidentally breaking the connection.”

Standing up and back, Caridee turned to Ilena. “Her vitals might become erratic because her subconscious will be trying to evaluate what feels like a very risky situation and whether it needs to fight. This is expected and not cause for worry unless vitals shift to dangerous levels. We’re talking 150 percent above her usual upper heart rate and blood pressure. In that case, use your best judgement and pull her hand off. The canar requires both hands in order to be active.” She looked over at Yavia. “Same goes for the Governor. If you need to intervene, that is the fastest way.”

Caridee crouched so she could gaze at Kenzo directly. “At first and probably for however long it takes, it might feel like nothing is happening. When you feel that first breaking through, it’ll probably happen pretty fast after that but you need to make sure you’re all the way through before you stop. But when you are, Remember that you are then connected to her. In order to prevent the expected physical and emotional backlash from being integrated into you both, you need to stop right then. She’s sedated but the dose is high enough that she’ll be experiencing it as an out of body experience and won’t have control of how the connection works from her end. At that point we won’t need the canar and myself, Karilan and Yavia can use our own touch and emotions to ground her and ease her through the rest of the reintegration. Any questions? If not, you’re free to begin.”

~Caridee

Kenzo nodded and set his hand on the canar.

The crystal illuminated as the connection was made and it would stay that way until it was broken.

At first, nothing happened. Everything was just… nothing. There was Keno’s mind, and that was all. Hyrushi drew some more power from Fayth and began using it like a sonar. He pushed his power through the nothing util he felt something push back. It was small, and he almost missed it. He focused on the sensation and began to feel a weight… a boundary that wouldn’t let him through. “I found her.” he whispered out loud.

Hyrushi focused on the boundary, feeling along it until he could feel where it began and ended. It was huge. It was like a typical shield telepaths and empaths created, but in reverse… and it was massive. In his mind, Kenzo stood before the boundary. Eela? Can you hear me, Eela? he said aloud, his voice cascading into the emptiness. He pushed against the emptiness, drawing yet more power to expand his mind and push the border back further and further.

The power he was pulling was seemingly limitless, the more he drew the more that filled it’s place, waiting to be used. In the seeming never-ending expanse that thread of power was an anchor line, showing him the way back, keeping him safe.

As Hyrushi sat, his skin became flushed. Sweat beaded on is forehead and soon perspiration could be seen through his shirt. The hand that held Fayth’s became warm… then hot, but not yet unbearable… just moderately uncomfortable.

As the heat increased, Sharah’s hand tightened on his.

In the canar, the further Kenzo pushed the boundary being something and nothing; the harder it became to push. Hyrushi drew more power and pushed harder and harder; until at last he came to a wall. In his mind’s eye it was a fortress made of solid metal. Eela!! he called, hoping that she would at least hear him… know he was coming.

Hyrushi, Governor

It was known that Eela Dasca had a formidable strength of will, but this before him was a tangible representation of it. No, she had not erected this wall herself, but she was upholding it, something he’d know intuitively. Something deep down within her was trying to protect her from something devastating. It was not pain, no, it was an agony that someone like her should never experience.

But the medication had made things fluid and she couldn’t tell where she began and ended. Something was there, outside of her protective space. She turned towards it, curious, her inner explorer never one to turn down learning and understanding. She stepped towards it. Was it a voice? It felt familiar. As the medication held her tightly, and her conscious, rational mind was suppressed, reality in this mind-space shifted.

On the other side of the safe space, the voice sounded again. She pressed herself up against the wall. Her small hands pressed flat along with her cheek.

Hello? a tiny voice called out to whomever might be there. It was a child’s voice.

~Eela

Sharah heard it, the tentative seeking, child like. Sharah created another thread, pulling in feelings of safety, protection, warmth, Home, family. Companionship rather than loneliness. Along with all the other emotions, she feed and wove it through the link. Let the feelings call to her, make Hyrushi’s call more desirable than where Eela was.

Sharah

Hyrushi smiled, knowing it was Eela… or at least a version of her. Hello, Eela. Do you remember me? My name is Kenzo… I am your friend… and I am going to get you out of there, if you will help me. Hyrushi drew more energy in, slowly building the flow of emotion through him, through the hand he set against the boundary, and forcing it into the wall before him.

Sharah kept the stream steady though it was starting to get difficult to control the flow. She knew Kenzo had made contact, they couldn’t stop now. Ilena and Yavia exchanged looks. Eela’s vitals seemed fine, but there were sudden changes in both Hyrushi and Fayth.

Kenzo’s body was reacting to the input. Sweat poured off of him, soaking his shirt and pants. His hair was matted to his head, and the hand that held Sharah’s felt like it was starting to become a hot coal. Around his collar, small blisters appeared, as they did on his hands as well.

The barrier started to glow where his hand pushed against it. He needed more energy. In his mind, he took a deep breath, and then he drew in more energy than he ever had before in his life. The wall flared as a planet’s worth of emotion suddenly flooded into the connection of the canar.

It was a last desperate attempt at self-preservation. Sharah’s mind cleared enough to realize she and Kenzo were very much in trouble. She sent a thread of warning through their connection, but it did nothing. She relaxed her hand, but they were still gripped together. Sharah jerked her hand away, her eyes snapping open. “Kenzo, no! Stop.”

Kenzo’s body began to burn. Burn mark appeared on his hands, neck, and face. He howled in pain and his eyes flew open, the black pupils suddenly flat white… but his hand stayed on the canar.

Hyrushi

Kenzo screamed, and Sharah echoed the sound. They hadn’t really needed to physical contact, it had just provided focus. She stumbled up and into the table a foot from her, “Get his hand off it!” she meant to yell, but it came out strained, but Ilena and Yavia were close enough and aware enough to sense her urgency. Yavia reached over to yank his hand off the canar. Sharah shoved anesthazine and a telepathic inhibitor into it and pressed it into his neck. There was a loud pop and long hiss as the hypo diffused into his system. “Ice, cold packs.” Yavia barely caught her before she collapsed on the floor. Ilena reached out both hands to stop the governor from sliding off the chair.
