“I will come back later.” She could tell, but she didn’t have the luxury of staying. She was still on shift and emergency response was always busy. “Try to get some sleep. I will tell Ragna to listen out for you. Would you like me to call Jezem?”

Fayth

Thyr nodded as he used the can of rub she’d given him to put a little under his nose and on his chest. Then he closed it and stood. “Yeah, that would probably be best.”

~ Thyr

The doctor grabbed her kit and let herself out through the stairs leading to the shop. She spotted the tall woman and approached. “I’m glad you called. That was a nasty cut. He’s going to be laid up for a couple of days. He’s asked me to call a friend of his. Until they get here could you listen out and call us back?”

Ragna nodded, “Of course. I’m happy too, but I can’t come tomorrow to watch the shop.” She waved her hand, “We’ll figure something out for him. Did he tell you about the cough? It sounds bad.”

“I noticed. He’ll be fine in a few days. Thanks so much.” Sharah left out the door and opened her comms and found the listing for Jezem and his husband and put a message through. “Thyr is very sick with pneumonia. I’ve given him something and sent him to bed. I’ll be back in the morning. He has someone watching the shop for him, but he asked me to call you.”

Fayth, SFCMO

Jezem entered the house, arms laden with bags of groceries and other odds and ends, and set everything down on the shining kitchen counters to be sorted and put away. Until the comms console beeped, the alert for new messages. It took a minute to extract himself from the complex tangle of straps and ties, but once free he pressed the button and the message played. On the haptic display it listed the message from Shivan’s shop, but it wasn’t Shivan’s voice on the message but Dr. Fayth. “That son of a whore! Let’s see him get sick when he’s dead!”

Everything that needed chilled or frozen were put away, the rest left as is along with a hasty note explaining his whereabouts to Argam. Explaining that the bags littering the counters were not a sign of sudden abduction but in response to stupid, idiotic behavior from their mutual friend. Jezem bolted from the house and into the rapid transport he paid extra for. Carrying him the distance from his house to the shop in a matter of minutes. Jezem burst in, immediately spotting the woman standing behind the counter. He ignored her for now, barely acknowledging her with a nod of his head and headed up the stairs and into Shivan’s room.

“You son of a lying pritash! Why didn’t you call me the moment you felt ill? Pneumonia?!? How in the hells did you catch that? Sisters! You cut your hand again?” Jezem stepped close to the bed, whipping back the sheets to thoroughly check this stupid man for any other unreported injuries.

Jezem

Shivan had started to sit up and reach for his weapon as soon as he heard someone unannounced rushing up the stairs. When he saw it was Jezem, his grip on the weapon under his pillow relaxed. “That doctor convinced me to call you. Actually, she was hoping I’d stay with you.” Shivan said with a shrug, reaching for his sheets back. He was uninjured, save for the cut on his hand, which had been healed with an auto suture and regenerator treatment.

But he looked pretty pathetic. Antenna wilted over in illness, breathing a little shallow, tissues next to his bed that he’d coughed phlegm into. He coughed hard a couple of times, a wet, nasty sounding cough. “I was trying to work this morning and a blade slipped.” He shrugged. “Happens.”

~ Thyr

“Injuries because you were working while sick don’t just happen,” Jezem seethed, “And that doesn’t change the fact that you should have told me you weren’t feeling well!” Only an idiot like Shivan would try to work while sick, especially when it meant letting someone else watch over the shop. “The Sisters must be watching over you. You could have injured yourself far worse and what in the hells have you been eating this whole while?” Nothing but replicated slop, likely, “Ugh, look at you. Barely strong enough to move. Alright, sit up, I’m taking you to my home,” Then there would be no temptation to work while sick, “I’ll let the doctor know where my house is.”

Jezem

“Well, I had that food you left before.” He’d run out of that three days ago. He went into a coughing fit for a moment. His throat was so sore from coughing. He sat up, “I didn’t think you’d give a damn. If you didn’t know it was pneumonia would you be this worked up?”

~ Thyr

“You would have run out of that already,” Jezem said without missing a beat. Then, “If I had known sooner then it wouldn’t have gotten this bad, now would it? And you’d be able to talk to me instead of that doctor!” Jezem only had himself to blame. He should have checked in more on Shivan. Should have dropped by yesterday like he had planned to except Argam needed his assistance with a small matter at his store. Jezem sighed, “I don’t need your pity party right now, Thyr. You can whinge at the holoscreen you’ll be sitting in front of for the next few days.” He stepped in to slide under Shivan’s arm and provide extra support, “Let’s get you downstairs. I have a rapid transport waiting.”

Jezem

Shivan felt warmer than he should to the touch. His fever was down from earlier, but he was still 3 or 4 degrees above normal. He lifted his arm over Jezem’s shoulders and used him as support as they headed downstairs. He made Jezem stop in the lobby for a moment to ask Ragna to close it up and not worry about tomorrow. Then he got into the rapid transport with Jezem.

~ Thyr

Sisters take pity on this fool, Jezem thought with exasperation, and bore Shivan’s weight with no complaint. He eyed the woman, Ragna, apparently and told her the combo for the door locks. They’ll be changed before morning. From inside the transport, Jezem sent a message to the hospital, alerting them that their patient Thyr would be staying with him for the time being. Once done he asked, “What do you want for dinner?”

Jezem

“Whatever you’re cooking. I haven’t been that hungry, it would be a waste to cook something special.” Shivan replied with a shrug. The transport landed in just a few minutes at Jezem’s house.

~ Thyr

“Maybe not hungry for that garbage you eat. You need actual food not particles arranged into the shape of food.” Jezem half-carried Shivan through the front door and across the living room to deposit him across the couch. A pile of blankets and pillows were dredged from hidden storage compartments and flung over the Andorian along with the remote control for the holoscreen, “You’re going to lie here and sleep or relax. After dinner I’ll help you to your room.” Jezem kept the room Shivan stayed in clean and even removed some of the more overtly Ferengi style choices for neutral options. In case Shivan ever had to come back to the house. “I better not hear any whining either,” He said before stepping away to start work on dinner.

It didn’t take long for delicious smells to float through the open-plan room. Heavy spices that promised to clear any clogged airways and sweetness to soothe sore throats.

Jezem

Shivan arranged the pillows and blankets until it was comfortable to him, then turned on the holoscreen. While Jezem was cooking, the sound of Shivan’s cough could be heard from the living room, a fit every few minutes. During a particularly bad one that had him sitting up and leaning forward, he coughed until he was blue(er) in the face.

~ Thyr

“Are you alright?” Jezem called from the kitchen after every fit. Sisters, Shivan sounded terrible. Maybe he should call the doctor because that could not be healthy. Jezem rushed over after that particularly bad fit, pushing a glass of honey tea into the Andorian’s hands, “Drink this, it’ll soothe your throat.” It was a human tea made of honey, ginger and lemon. Three simple ingredients but very effective. “I’m calling that doctor,” Jezem said while Shivan drank.

Jezem

Shivan drank the tea. It did help soothe his throat, but he started coughing while he was drinking it and nearly spilled. Then he drank some more. He shook his head. “She said it would get worse before it got better. I’ll be fine.”

~ Thyr

“Sisters!” Jezem rushed to grab towels from the kitchen to set down and catch any accidental spillage or should anything else come up. Jezem frowned, a familiar look in his eyes as analyzed the situation, “And that’s exactly what she said? No paraphrasing or ‘close enough to what she said’? Nothing like that?” Shivan always downplayed injuries, and it would be like him to ignore or not pay attention when a doctor spoke, “I’m going to call the doctor.”

Jezem

“Yes! She said actually, I should stay with you, the cough and the exhaustion will get worse.” Shivan said, looking up at Jezem. “Call her if you want but she’s going to say the same thing.” He drank a little more tea.

~ Thyr

Jezem’s eyes narrowed as though assessing the truthfulness of those statements. The man sounded like he was dying so it wasn’t hard to believe that a doctor told him to stay with a friend for a while. Knowing Shivan the Andorian would have cocooned himself in his room and weathered his illness out alone without any help whatsoever. Jezem sighed, “I’ll make you more tea. Maybe I have some heat balm somewhere too. . .” Orion heat balm was some intense stuff but a little bit on the chest or back worked wonders in easing aches and pains. If you’re willing to get over the initial searing burst of heat.

Jezem

Shivan relaxed into the sofa, drinking the rest of the tea. He coughed, but it did seem to hurt him a little less. Jezem would know Shivan could deal with the initial searing heat of the cream. And then he would feel better, at least aches-wise. “Jezem.... Thanks.”

~ Thyr

“Don’t mention it,” Jezem muttered before taking the empty cup and refilling it with more tea. A few minutes later he came back with the balm and gently lifted Shivan from the couch to apply it in small dabs to the Andorian’s chest, back and around the shoulders and neck, “Get some rest, I’ll go make sure your room is ready.” Once away, out of earshot, Jezem dialed the doctor from one of the home’s comms console, “I need to speak with Dr. Fayth regarding one of her eccentric patients.”

Jezem

Jezem was asked to wait for a moment and then the woman came back on the line. “She’s with a patient, but will be with you in a couple of minutes if you will wait.”

Roughly two minutes later the comm activated again. “This is Dr. Fayth.”

Fayth, SFCMO

Jezem shifted closer to the comms screen, “Um, hello Dr. Fayth,” He winced, unsure how to present himself but pushed through his discomfort, “Your patient, um, Thyr is now staying with me and I’m concerned about his condition. He nearly coughed his lungs out onto my couch but he insists he’ll be fine.”

Jezem

“Good he needs to cough. It will keep his lungs strong. Is he coughing anything up?” He should be coughing a lot as the medicine worked. It would ease up much later in the night. But phlegm was good; blood was not.

Fayth, SFCMO

“No, not that I’ve seen. Just. . . coughing a lot. Should I call you if that changes? What should I do? I’ve given him some tea and put heat balm on his chest and back for any aches or pain.”

Jezem

“He should be coughing up phlegm. If he isn’t that is why he is coughing so hard. Once the phlegm starts loosening g and getting g out the coughing will decrease. I gave him a rub to put on his chest, neck, and under his nose. It will help loosen all that stuff in his lungs up. Use it liberally. Hot drinks.” She thought a moment. “I know you cook, but do you have a replicator?”

Fayth, SFCMO

Jezem nodded, commiting the doctor’s words to memory. So coughing. . . good. Phlegm should be coming out. “You- oh that-” Jezem cut himself off before he could launch into a vocally abusive tirade about Shivan. Of course he’d fail to mention that the good doctor gave him something. No ‘oh by the way please grab that thing the doctor gave me, thanks’ just whining and moaning. “We don’t have a replicator, of any kind. What do I need?” Replicators were too easy and Federation trash, Jezem refused to let Argam buy one for the home. He took far too much pride in either making or acquiring physical items to make them on the cheap as though meaningless.

Jezem

“It’s called a vaporizer. It turns water into warm steam to breathe in. I can bring one later. For now, he could stand over a pot of boiling water or sit in the bathroom with extremely hot water running. He should not be in the water. Only a few minutes every hour if you do that.” Sharah told him.

Fayth, SFCMO

“No, that won’t be necessary, I know where I can get one.” Argam should be able to pick something up while at work and in the mean time. . . Jezem looked towards the master bathroom. Yeah, that will do. “Um, thank you for the advice I’ll let you know if he’s not, um, coughing.” Jezem cut the connection before the call could get awkward. He chewed on his thumbnail, thinking. He returned to the living room and gently lifted Shivan upright, “Alright, we need to get you in some steam in the sauna room. Lean on me if you have to.”

Jezem

Shivan groaned. “Jezeeeem, I just want to lay down.” He said as he was lifted upright. He let Jezem help him up, but then stubbornly made his own way toward the sauna room. “You called Doctor Fayth, didn’t you?”

~ Thyr

“Too bad, we’re doing this because it’s good for you.” Jezem slipped Shivan’s arm around his shoulder and guided him towards the master bedroom. The room was richly appointed in the Orion style but there were bits and pieces of Argam’s personality and taste sprinkled in between. Shivan was shuffled through the bedroom into the attached master bathroom that positively screamed “too much money”. Gold everywhere inlaid with sapphires and lapis lazuli. There was a giant tub, an open air shower with a rainfall shower head. Shelves full of expensive products and impossibly fluffy towels and bathrobes. Jezem opened a side door into a wooden room with a brazier in the middle.

“Sit here,” Jezem helped Shivan down onto a wooden seat and messed with a couple controls on the wall. Steam emitted from the brazer in the middle and filled with room, “Alright I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
