About fifteen minutes later, Eela stirred from her imposed sleep. As her eyes blinked open, the view was not the one she was expecting. She had fallen asleep on the couch and she was most definitely not there. She was upstairs. There was warmth on her hand and she turned her head, still a little groggy to see Karilan holding her hand, and Lt. Rox clearly in observation mode. “Karilan? Ilena? This was just a nap, right? I haven’t been out for days or something ridiculous like that?” Her mind was seeking information, and it all seemed so.. matter-of-fact.
Katilan smiled and said “No, dear. Just about an hour or so.”
“Just about that. You were carried here so you would be more comfortable.” Ilena sat and held her other hand. “Would you like water or food?”
Sharah, she’s awake.
Eela considered this for a moment. “No food. Kenzo made me eat earlier.” She didn’t have the energy to be formal. “But some water would be good I think.” She shifted uncomfortably and tried to push herself to a sitting position, frowning. “And I was silly and left my brace on. I’m not supposed to sleep with it. I could use some help getting it off.” There was coordination and energy involved she wasn’t sure she had.
Ilena went over to the small vanity and poured a glass of water from a pitcher and brought it over. After Eela had some she helped the woman sit up and remove the brace and helped her get comfortable, and supported by pillows and rolled blankets.
Eela studied Karilan. “I know I should apologize for earlier, but I fear it would come off a little indifferent and that isn’t what I want.”

Karilan patted her hand and said “When you are better, you can apologize by taking me on a weekend getaway. Water, drinks, great food… and you’re buying.” They smiled at her, but there was a glistening in their eyes showing they were holding back tears.
Karilan Massat
The thought of leaving Oed for even just a few days was a rather tempting idea. Even if Oed had resorts they could go to she was just too conspicuous around here. Even if she were to wear wigs and hide her face that wasn’t a fun way to spend a holiday. Besides, she had promised to look after the colony so Kenzo could go back to Earth for his own time away. He was far overdue.
Still as she looked at Karilan she wanted to promise anything and everything. Eela’s subsequent smile didn’t touch her eyes but it was the best she could do under the circumstances. “I did promise you a weekend before and so we’ll figure something out.”
Blowing out a breath, Eela understood by the presence of at least two people who hadn’t been here earlier that things a lot more dire than she could process and it was more than Sharah and Caridee could mange on their own. That should unnerve her, right? “So who all is invited to this impromptu party I’m holding?” She might not be able to feel or express emotions, but nothing was blocking her wit, snark and sarcasm. Was that enough? Not in the least.
~Eela
Ilena nodded at Massat, “The three of us, Dr Fayth, Governor Hyrushi, Yavia, and your daughter.”
Yavia was here too. Well, at least this was mostly in the family. She didn’t feel self-conscious about any of it, but later she might. Later… if this was reversible. For the moment Eela didn’t let her brain consider what she would do if they found it couldn’t be reversed.
In the garden, Yavia helped Sharah up and they found Sevren. Yavia set a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Your mother is awake.”

From a still place in her mind, Caridee surfaced and nodded before her eyes slipped open. It was game time. Pushing herself to her feet. “Okay, time to go see if we can get our patient on board.”
They let the Governor know as well and headed upstairs. Caridee slipped into the room and moved to her mother’s side, sitting on the edge of the bed with a bit of space so she didn’t crowd her. “Hey, how’s the fatigue?”
Eela drew in a deep breath and shrugged. “Better than before. I wouldn’t say I feel energetic in any way, but a bit less like I’m going to drop off.”
Caridee nodded and then proceeded to explain the first plan and then the revised one that they were leaning towards, including the risks and the aftermath they would need to prepare for. “I know none of it sounds ideal, but we’re dealing with a very complicated situation. Kuskaaritz is notoriously difficult to treat, and often we’d spend weeks reacquainting a person’s mind and body to emotional stimuli. But we don’t have that kind of time here. Not with the seizures, of which you had another. On their own, we could manage them, but in conjunction with the rest, once your neurotransmitter highs from the canar drop entirely, they’ll be very hard to get back up. We have a window here we won’t get again.”
Eela leaned back against her pillows and closed her eyes. “I know it’s everyone’s own personal choices and your own risk to take, but you have to know how much I dislike the whole thing.” But she wasn’t asking them to do this for her, they were offering. I don’t want to do this, but is there really any choice?” She looked at Sharah and then Kenzo. “I couldn’t bear it if it worked and something terrible happened to you both. You’re at the greatest risk. Hell, if anyone is harmed…” Eela shook her head. It seemed like an unreconcilable situation.
~Eela
“The risk pales in comparison to the reward.” Kenzo said matter-of-factly. “And the risk is actually minimal. Dr. Fayth will be able to adjudicate the necessary power to reestablish the connection; and I will push that through and then step aside so the others can fill the space created. Quite straightforward.” He looked intently at Eela for a moment and then said “And it isn’t like we have a plethora of options before us.”
Kenzo
Sharah nodded, “We have few options Eela, and a very limited time frame. We’ve discussed it, and this is my professional recommendation.”
She trusted Kenzo. She trusted them all, but Kenzo and her had a different sort of bond that was hard to explain. Their was a deep friendship built upon them both taking chances on each other and finding themselves pleasantly surprised. Had it been that moment in his office when she told him about the mystic and the strange sort of premonition slash advice slash message she had been given? Either way, he knew her deepest fears sometimes more than she did and if he felt this was an acceptable risk, well, she could trust that. It didn’t mean she didn’t have misgivings though.
Eela took a moment to gaze at each person in turn. Karilan, whose hand she reached out and squeezed for a moment, Yavia, Ilena, Caridee. She studied her daughter intently. “You were there… before. I know this is a different situation but…” She lost the words that would make her thoughts make sense.
Dee smiled warmly, radiating a certainty that her mother couldn’t feel, but that her mediation had provided. “Yes, and that is why I know we need to act now. We’re not going to let you suffer- not if we can help it. You won’t go down that path again.” The path of darkness, of despair. Except this time it wouldn’t be despair, it would be giving up because she couldn’t even feel despair. No, Caridee wasn’t going to sit back and watch her mother lose her interest in life again.
With a small nod, Eela finally looked at Sharah, her hazel eyes gazing deeply into her friend’s dark ones. “I trust everyone, and I’ve trusted you with so much, including things that have turned out to be pretty damn important in my life. That hasn’t changed here. But are you sure? I know I can’t truly comprehend what’s being asked of you right now, so I need to know that you …” Will what, be okay? None of them could guarantee that. Eela knew enough about what they were going to attempt to understand at least the basics of the complications that could arise. “Just… are you sure?” It was weird to be timid about this question and yet sound like it was an everyday conversation about Oed’s unvaried weather.
~Eela
“It was my suggestion, Eela,” Sharah said by way of explanation. Sharah wasn’t sure. She’d never attempted anything like this, and neither had Kenzo as far as she knew. Based on what the healer had said, no one on Halaii had ever encountered anything like this before either. It was completely unknown. She had no idea if it was safe for Eela or for themselves. She didn’t know the consequences or side effects, but doing nothing wasn’t an option. Only confidence showed on her face and what others could feel from her. She looked at Hyrushi and Sevren giving a nod. If they were in agreement she felt they should proceed.
“If everyone has had time to eat, drink, rest as needed, I suggest we get started. Ilena, I want you to monitor Eela through the process. Yavia you will do the same for myself and Governor Hyrushi. Use your best judgement on calling a halt.”
