Hyrushi stood looking out over the rooftop garden that made up part of his sanctuary. Not many at all knew that the Governor rarely stayed in the so-called ‘Gubernatorial Mansion’, the large estate set aside for those holding the colony’s highest office. Rather, upon his arrival Kenzo had procured the uppermost penthouse in the city’s highest residential building which actually spanned two rooftops of connected buildings.

As he stood looking out over the city, he couldn’t help but wonder how… why… when the occurances of the past few hours would boil over into the public eye. He shook his head. That was a future problem. Now… now he had a friend… and a partner… to help.

Hyrushi, Governor

Her slider came to a stop and Eela treaded the familiar path inside and up the long lift to the top floors. Her guards stayed close, as if they weren’t entirely sure their charge would comply. A tiny part of her was amused at the unpredictability they expected. At least some things about her stood true these days.

Kenzo’s guards let her in and she sensed his presence outside. She came to stand near him, her emotions flat. There was no pain, no feelings of shock, no despair or dismay. Nothing. “Well, you called it.” That lunch they had had before the Vren arrived, when he had commented that if something would happen, it would happen in the first couple days of their arrival. He nailed it.

Kenzo didn’t move, but a sense of care and support washed over her. “I am truly sorry, Eela. I know he was becoming quite important to you. And for what it is worth, I appreciated how happy he made you feel.” Only then did he turn and look directly at her. He set his hands gently on her shoulders. “Come and sit. And you can tell me why the Lieutenant Governor is showing up and harassing bookstore employees.”

Hyrushi, Gov

“Karilan called you,” she said. A statement, not a question. Was she miffed? No. Eela supposed she should have expected something like that. And strangely, whereas touch usually buoyed her, it did nothing right now. It hadn’t with Karilan in the shop and it didn’t here with Kenzo. Eela didn’t ponder that for long before she moved to sit on one the chaises. The one she idly thought of as her chaise, given every time she came here, she ended up sitting or lying on this one.

She crossed her legs, boots and all and looked out at the view, and not at Kenzo. Her thoughts were not the jumble she expected and more like vapour she was trying to catch in her hands. “Dash was a complicated person- more so than he seemed on the surface. There are things that only a select few people know, that I know.” His juvenile record was sealed, though she supposed that wouldn’t stop some people once the inevitable investigation began. “This last week he’s been… tense at times. It was easy to brush it off as stress, and the Vren, and getting settled here on Oed. But it was more than that, and so I asked him about it last night and he said he would tell me tomorrow when we planned to have lunch together. He just wanted to enjoy our evening, and so I let it go. Whatever it is has been haunting him, but he’s too well practiced to let it show in public, to let people other than those who know him well sense it. But I knew. And this feeling from him started ever since someone from his past showed up. But it could be simply coincidence. Or it could be everything. That old friend of his knows what I know, maybe more. I just can’t shake the feeling that there is a clue right in front of me.” Finally, Eela turned her head towards Kenzo. “But I have to figure it out. I know what you will say, but there are too many things lately to be simply coincidence. And you weren’t there when Ren called me. You didn’t see the absolutely devastated look in Jeanette’s eyes, even though she didn’t know yet that he was gone. I won’t let this destroy Oed or derail any of the work with the Vren. Maybe it’s too late. Maybe it was too late the moment the police were called to the scene, but I’ll be damned if I sit around and wait for everything to implode around me.” All this delivered matter-of-factly. Normally there would be anger under the surface of her voice and emotions. Not this time. Curious.

Kenzo listened and watched her as she spoke, taking care not to intrude on her emotions too much… but the lack of emotion sent alarm bells ringing in his mind. When Eela finished talking, he let quiet hang in the air for a long time before speaking. Like her, he looked out over the city and not at her.

“You say you are looking for a clue… a clue for what? Do you think his death is the result of some conspiractorial act? You say someone from his past showed up.” and he sighed. “It does not take a great leap of logic to deduce Mr. Jones’ past was a… ‘colorful’… one.” He then turned to look at her. “All the more reason for you to keep your distance. We are exposed here, Eela… you and I. This is the most precarious position we have ever been in thus far. So we need to keep our involvement as minimal as possible. Allow the police to investigate. Let the evidence be gathered and allow it to speak for itself. You and I both need to take great pains to ensure that there is no justifiable cause to accuse of meddling in a Police matter. He looked backout over the city. “You must leave it alone, Eela. For now. But I assure you you will be present at all of the briefings surrounding this.”

“Oh, I have no doubt they’ll be questioning me sooner rather than later. It’s no secret we were seeing each other. Hell, we made a very public outing of our first date Besides, I was one of the last ones to see him alive. He left my place, oh, what, four hours ago? If they don’t come talk to me, they’re idiots. The clue I need to figure out is what he was going to tell me. What had him so uneasy? It was an anomaly and it’s sitting very weirdly with me.”

Kenzo took a breath and exhaled slowly. “You are in crisis, Eela. I can feel it. Even if you could be a part of this… you can’t like this. You won’t make sound judgements. And sound judgements are what we need the most of right now.”

Kenzo

She sighed. “Well I can’t sit around my place doing nothing. That’s not helpful either. I’m going in to the office. They can find me there when they get to it. Besides, Cort, Elema and Sherri should hear the news from me first. We should also talk to Mathis and Caputo about an official statement. It makes sense for Caputo to do so, to give Jeanette some time for herself to-” Eela was interrupted by her comm chirping and she pulled the earpiece out of her pants pocket and activated it. “Dasca.”

She inhaled deeply and looked at Kenzo briefly. “It’s Dee.”

“No, I’m not at home, sorry about breakfast. I’m with the Governor right now. We’re dealing with a situation… Mhmmm… No I won’t make it back to my place, but Dee, I need you to do something for me… I need you and Kian and Alais to stay in the building today. You can use the pool and I will have security let you into my place. You can take Alais to play on the patio if you like… No, things are not okay right now. I just need to know you are all safe and that will help me a lot… Thank you. I’ll call you a little later… Love you too. Bye.”

Eela pulled the device out of her ear and simply held it in her hand. It was a little after 0600 and it wasn’t a terrible time to go into work. It’s not like there wasn’t a pile of stuff waiting for her anyway. It was a Monday afterall, and after the gala.
