As the speeches ended, Karina got up from her seat and took a circuitous route, checking with parents and children, to the buffett. She was looking forward to meeting the Vren, but she was also aware of wanting to make this a positive experience for the children, parents, and their guests. There would be time to indulge her own curiosity later.

McBride was also watching everything unfold with curious eyes. He meandered over to the table with Cattaneo and dropped his voice. “What do you think so far?” he said, picking out the Vren in the crowd and seeing who was mingling with whom.

Karina looked around as things began to settle and pockets of people settled into conversation and their meals. She saw someone else who was standing around observing and made her way over. If she remembered her briefing correctly, and she did, the Vren she was approaching was one of the Attaches. “Ku rok,” she greeted softly. It was hard to get her voice enhancer to make the sounds correctly with the trills and what sounded to Karina like soft gutturals, but she tried.

Braak was a bit shorter than most of the other Vren, and was a bright green, with yellow and black splotches. He blinked and gave something of a smile. “Greetings. Your attempt was admirable,” he said, using the translator like more of the others. “I am Braak Sy’rt. I am our cultural aide.”

“Thank you. Some sounds are still difficult with my vocal enhancer,” Her cheeks darkened sldightly. “I am Karina Enger. I am our Director of Education. I am very pleased to meet you.”

“It is most exciting to be here. I am hoping to pick up your language while I am here, but I was not confident enough in its use the way the Ambassador is and did not want to risk a misunderstanding,” Sy’rt said.

“Learning new languages is a task I have found difficult,” Enger admitted.

“What sort of education are you responsible for?” he asked curiously.

She laughed, it having a slight mechanical sound like the rest of her utterances. “All of it. From our youngest offspring all the way to advanced degrees. Oed just recently opened its own university. A place for advanced learning in specific fields for those who want to expand their knowledge and skills. It is a daunting task.”

“I can see how that would be. So many different areas,” Sy’rt said with an eager nod. “Education is very important to us as well. Especially now, it is important for our people to have new knowledge.”

“New knowledge I think is important for everyone I believe.” Karina replied. “I would be happy to give you a tour of the university. I am sure the students who greeted you this evening would be thrilled to discuss with you as well if you would be interested.”
